Chapter 20: Purpose in Life
Before anyone could stop, a blue van skid to where Bella was standing and in a flash the girl was gone. "BELLA!" Alice shouted.
"Shit!" Emmett cursed as he rushed at the human speed over to Bella's truck.
"Emmett do you see her?" Alice asked anxiously.
Emmett dropped down on all fours to inspect under the van. "SOMEONE GET AN AMBULANCE!" Jasper shouted at the kids surprising them all.
"Emmett what do you see?" Rosalie asked nervously, as the driver scrambled out of his dented vehicle
"Guys she's pinned under the van," Emmett told them.
"I tried to stop but the asphalt is slick with ice," tried to apologise to Emmett who still lay on the cold floor.
Alice fidgeted nervously, wishing people would turn their heads for just a second so Emmett could get the van off of Bella "Jasper, distract them," Emmett whispered to his brother.
"Let's get out of the way so when the ambulance gets here we aren't making it difficult for them!" He called to the students.
It was enough of a distraction for Emmett to move on the side of the van and steadily push it out of the way, grabbing onto Bella's hand once he could reach her. "Ali move Jazz, quick!" he instructed catching her attention. Peering over the top of the truck she looked to see why she had been ordered to move her husband.
Seeing the pool of blood that lay around Bella's still body Alice quickly jumped from her perch on the truck moving in her husbands direction. "Jasper" she called urgently
Emmett lifted Bella into his arms, cradling her carefully as he laid her down on the bed of the truck. "How bad is she?" Rosalie asked, unsure of how to help.
"Do I look like Carlisle?" Emmett barked irritably.
He pressed his hand against her bleeding head. "Her arm's shattered that's for sure look at it," he told her.
"How the hell did she get hit by this truck and not get her pelvis crushed?" Rosalie asked in shock.
"Knowing Bells she probably tried to move and slipped," Emmett replied.
He looked at her shattered arm as the ambulance showed up. "WE'RE OVER HERE!" Rosalie shouted waving her arms. Alice jumped into the truck, biting her lower lip as she looked at her friend.
When arriving at the hospital, the four of them were standing in the waiting room waiting for their father to come out. Two hours passed when Carlisle finally emerged from the OR. "Carlisle what's going on?" Alice asked worriedly.
"Where's Chief Swan?" Carlisle asked, his eyes revealing sadness.
They looked over at the Chief of Police that was sitting in one of the chairs. "The injuries she sustained weren't enough to kill her, but she's dying anyways," Carlisle told his children before going to speak to Bella's father.
"Oh God…" Alice whispered choked up.
Walking over to his wife, Jasper wrapped his arms around her petite body in a hug. Rosalie moved her hand over Emmett's back, sadness showing on their faces at the news.
Walking back down the hall, Carlisle was heading to Bella's room when he saw Alice there. "Alice you should go home," he told her as he grabbed Bella's chart.
"Carlisle you can turn her," she answered.
The coven leader looked at his daughter and shook his head slowly. "Impossible, I made a treaty with the Quileutes and I'm not about to break it," he told her.
"Talk to them, you have to talk to them. Talk to Jacob he's Ephraim's great-grandson," Alice insisted quietly.
Pinching the bridge of his nose, he let out a sigh. "Carlisle you know this isn't right! She's only dying because Edward's not here," she pointed out earnestly. Gripping his arm, Alice looked up at him. "She's not supposed to die, she's supposed to be one of us, I saw it," she whispered. Leaning back against the wall, the doctor combed his fingers through his hair before putting Bella's chart back.
"Watch Bella, call my cell phone if anything changes," he instructed as he left the hospital.
Walking to the back of the parking lot where his Mercedes sat waiting, he turned the alarm off and got in.
The drive to the treaty line felt like an eternity, when he finally arrived, he parked right in front of the line so it was just inches from going over it. Getting out, it was only a matter of minutes before he heard a howl in the distance. "Sorry about them, what can I do for you doctor?" Jacob asked as he walked from the forest. Sighing, Carlisle stood right in front of the pack leader.
"I believe you spoke with Charlie?" He queried.
"Yes…from what I am told her injuries are not life threatening, but she's dying anyways?" Jake answered with another question.
"That is correct," Carlisle stated nodding.
Sighing, Jacob shook his head slowly as he paced around. "I know why you're here, Carlisle, I don't need
the ability of telepathy to know what you are here for," he informed.
"Then you know what my question is," Carlisle answered.
"I do," Jacob agreed.
The werewolf sighed, shaking his head slowly. "All I have ever wanted in the world was for Bella to be happy. Her happiness is everything and for the last two weeks I haven't seen the Bella I knew and loved. You know as well as I do why she's dying, its because that son of yours made that deal with the Volturi," Jacob explained.
"Yes, he made the deal with the Volturi to protect her," Carlisle answered.
"She's dying because of him," Jacob muttered.
"Jake, we don't have time, I need your permission to turn her," he answered.
Walking over to the motorcycle that was sitting on the side, Jacob sat in the seat, straddling the bike, pinching the bridge of his nose. "Will you please give me permission," Carlisle said quietly. Sighing Jacob dropped his arm and looked over at the vampire standing there.
"I'm making this decision without the council and without the pack, I'm doing what I think is right as the great-grandson of the chief," he informed.
"I understand," Carlisle answered.
Jacob nodded and grabbed his helmet that was sitting on the ground. "I'm going to let you do it, not because you're begging me too, but because her only purpose to live is in Volterra. I have my reasons, reasons that you don't need to know, but Carlisle, as Ephraim Black's great-grandson, I am giving you permission to turn Bella Swan," he informed. He put his helmet on and drove off. Climbing back into his car, Carlisle sped back to the hospital as fast as his car could take him.
Bella woke up with a gasp, looking around. "Where am I?" She asked. She felt someone touch her arm and she jumped off the bed with a hiss. Standing there was Alice with her hands raised.
"Bella, it's me, we brought you back home, do you remember anything?" Alice questioned, concerned.
Realizing that she was able to hear the tiniest sounds in the house, she looked down at her hands and saw that her skin was pale…paler than usual. "Where's a mirror?" She asked.
"Over here," Esme replied gesturing to the vanity.
Walking over, Bella looked in the mirror and her eyes widened in shock, she looked over her shoulder to see if anyone was standing behind her, but looked back at the mirror. "This is me?" She asked shocked, placing her hands on her face.
"Bella you're beautiful," Alice complimented smiling.
"What…what happened?" She asked, still confused.
Noticing her bright red eyes, her mouth dropped. "I told Carlisle to," a voice informed. Spinning around, Bella saw Jacob standing in the doorway.
"Y--You told Carlisle to turn me?" She asked confused.
Nodding his head slowly he stood in front of her. "Bella, your injuries from the accident weren't severe. You had a shattered arm, a concussion, and a gash on your head. You were dying and I knew why," he replied quietly.
Standing there in confusion, Bella suddenly remembered the accident. "Wait…why aren't you attacking him?" Alice suddenly asked. The burning in Bella's throat suddenly became clear and the first thing she smelt afterwards was Jacob's blood. Gasping she held her breath, backing up.
"I'm going to teach her how to hunt, we'll be back," Jasper informed as he led Bella out of the room.
Walking down the stairs to the Cullen's new home, Bella looked around the house in disbelief. "This is just…wow Jasper," she commented.
"It's not like our first home, but it's home for now," Jasper answered.
Bella bit her lower lip and Jasper led her out of the house to go on her first hunt. "Jasper, my father…" she started, wanting to know what happened to her dad.
"Your father is fine," Jasper answered.
"No, I mean, does he think I'm dead?" She asked.
She bit her lower lip as they left the house, getting her answer when Jasper wouldn't answer her question. "Alright, when we hunt, we let our animal instincts take over," Jasper explained. Bella nodded her head slowly as she followed him into the forest for her first hunt.
