Chapter 19

Santana walked back down stairs ten minutes later, noticing that Julia and Maria were sitting in the family room, talking.

"Mija, where are Rachel and Mario?" Maria asked her daughter.

"Rachel is feeding him. She'll be down in a minute." Santana answered, taking a seat on the far side of the family room.

"So, I heard he looks a lot like you." Julia said.

"Yeah, he is my son." Santana stated in a 'duh' tone.

"He's so cute and chubby." Maria giggled.

"Mom." Santana groaned. Just as Maria was about to say something, Rachel walked downstairs holding a babbling Mario in her arms. Santana watched as Julia's eyes lit up at the sight of Mario, but she tried to hide it.

"Hello, everyone." Rachel smiled at the people that were sitting in the family room.

"Rachel Berry. It's nice to FINALLY meet you. I've been hearing about you since the 6th grade. Santana has never let me actually meet you, though."

"It's nice to meet you too. I've heard a lot about you." Rachel smiled as she fixed Mario in her arms.

"I bet Santana has told you a lot about me."

"She has." Rachel nodded.

"So, does that mean that you hate me?" Julia smirked.

"Julia! Estás siendo estúpido. ¿Podemos tener un buen almuerzo? ¡Tienes que ser muy bueno si quieren pasar tiempo con su sobrino. No seas una perra." Maria scolded.

"Sorry, mom. I was just being truthful. Santana probably told her that I turn people to stone."

"Yo no he dicho eso, pero yo lo dije algunas cosas más. y la madre, que dice que volverá a pasar tiempo con Mario? Si yo tuviera a mi manera, ella ni siquiera verlo." Santana said.

"Santana, be nice." Maria sighed.

Santana rolled her eyes and stood, walking over to Rachel and kissing her cheek. She then took Mario into her arms and sat back on the couch.

"Julia, this is Mario. Mario, this is your auntie Julia." Santana told her son and made his little hand wave to Julia.

"I must say, he is beautiful." Julia stated, almost mesmerized by the baby in her sister's arms.

"Thanks." Rachel smiled as she took a seat next to her family.

"Mom, what's for lunch?"

"Fajitas." Maria answered.

"Oh! My favorite." Rachel cheered. Mario looked over at his mom and poked her cheek.

Santana watched as Julia's eyes followed every movement Mario made. Her eyes were bright and she had a small smiled on her face, obviously mesmerized by him. Santana rolled her eyes at her sister's stubbornness.

"Do you want to hold him?" Santana finally gave in.

Julia looked up and nodded eagerly. Santana stood and handed her son over to her annoying sister. Julia's face showed that she was awe of the baby in her lap. Mario was just as curious, making sure to touch every part of Julia's face.

"He's beautiful." Julia whispered.

"Thank you. He's our life." Rachel beamed back at her.

Santana watched carefully as Julia studied the baby. They actually looked quite a bit alike, considering Mario looked so much like Santana. Mario looked up at his aunt and poked her nose, which made them both smile.

"I think he likes you." Santana finally smiled. As much as she hated Julia, seeing her interact with her son was a precious moment.

Julia didn't reply, but placed a small kiss on Mario's forehead. Rachel and Maria smiled at the interaction.

"Well, Mi hijos, lunch is ready and I know that you're all hungry." Maria announced.

"You know I am." Santana cheered as she stood. Mario raised his arms to his mami when he saw her stand, letting her know that he wanted her. Santana picked him up from Julia's lap and walked into the kitchen, leaving Rachel and Julia in the living room alone.

"So, what has Santana told you about me?" Julia asked. She didn't seem snarky, but a little nervous.

"We tell each other everything." Rachel told her, letting her know that she knew everything about their relationship.

"So, you think I'm a bitch?"

Rachel sighed and let a small smile form on her face. "I don't judge people by what others say. If I had, Santana and I wouldn't be together."

"That's pretty cool. I'm hoping that Santana is the same way."

Rachel looked at her puzzlingly. "Julia, I don't think you realize how much you hurt her. When you told her that you didn't accept that she was a lesbian, she was devastated. She looked up to you. You were her role model, but now she thinks that you think she's disgusting. She was seriously debating on whether or not you could even meet Mario." Rachel told her.

"Seriously?"

Rachel nodded. "Santana may not show it, but she gets hurt by the things that people say. That's why she's so vicious. She just wants you to accept her for the way that she is."

Rachel walked in to the kitchen as well, leaving Julia to think in the living room. She had thought that Santana didn't really care about what she thought, and to know that she had been hurting her little sister all this time, made her want to crawl in a hole. Plus, Santana didn't even want her near her son? It hurt Julia to know that she had pushed Santana that far.

"Julia, if you don't come now, I'm going to eat everything." Rickey called.

"Ricardo, if you eat my fajita, I will eat your face." Julia called back, making her way into the kitchen as well.

Mario giggled as he smacked the water in the bathtub. Bath time was her favorite, but Rachel and Santana hated it. No matter how hard they tried, they ended up getting soaked by the giggling three month old.

"San, where is his shampoo?" Rachel asked her girlfriend.

"It's in the nursery, on his changing table."

"Why?" Rachel asked, amused.

"Because I like the way it smells." Santana shrugged, pouring water on Mario in an attempted to get all the soap off of him.

"You are the weirdest person I know." Rachel rolled her eyes and sighed as she stood to go grab the shampoo.

"But you love me." Santana replied, making sure all the soap was off of Mario.

"Hey, did you ever call Mercedes, Puck, and Kurt and see why they didn't come?" Rachel called as she searched for the shampoo.

"That's not really my thing. I couldn't care less if Wheezy, Puck, and lady face didn't come. I was a little disappointed that Britts didn't show, but when I called her, she sounded a little 'busy'."

Rachel walked back into the bathroom with a mildly disgusted face. "Ew."

"Why, ew? I'm glad that she's happy with someone."

Rachel poured a little bit of shampoo and ran it through her son's hair. Mario got a little fussy when he didn't know what his mom was doing to his, but calmed down when Santana gave him a little ducky that he loved.

"Rach, careful." Santana warned when the shampoo got close to Mario's eyes.

"San, I know how to bathe my baby." Rachel replied, slightly annoyed at Santana's words.

"I'm not saying you don't. I was just warning you that it was getting close to his eyes and you know he hates that."

"Santana, I know what I'm doing."

Santana huffed in annoyance, and rolled her eyes. She and Rachel didn't get into arguments often, but when they did, Santana found herself annoyed very quickly. She waited until Rachel moved back a little before carefully rinsing the shampoo from Mario's dark hair.

When all the traces of soap were gone, Rachel picked him up out of the tub. She walked into the nursery to dry him off so he could be changed. Santana stayed in the bathroom to clean up after his bath. She was grateful that he wasn't a toddler yet so he couldn't make a real mess, but he was still splashing which caused some water to get on the floor.

When she walked into the nursery, she saw Rachel buttoning Mario's onesie. He was happily kicking his legs, cooing lightly. Santana couldn't help but smile at her son, and Rachel finally looked up at her with a sad smile.

"I'm sorry I snapped at you."

"It's okay, baby. I know that you get a little defensive when you're tired, and today has been a long day. I'm actually pretty happy about how today turned out. I was expecting Julia to be more of a dummy, but she actually surprised me. She was acting like a human for once."

"I may or may have had a talk with her." Rachel said sheepishly.

"What did you say?" Santana asked, not really surprised that Rachel talked to Julia. Rachel wasn't really one to hold back what she said. She and Santana really had that in common.

"I just told her that her words hurt you more than she knows."

"And what did she say?"

"She actually looked kind of shocked. I don't think she knows that she hurt your feelings." Rachel told her as she placed some pants on Mario.

Santana rolled her eyes, and picked Mario up now that Rachel was done dressing him. He was ready for his last meal, and Santana knew that he was going to get fussy again if he didn't eat soon.

"Are there more breast milk bottles in the fridge?" Santana asked.

"Um, yeah. I think there's two more. I should probably go make more."

"Alright, you do that, and I'll feed him." Rachel nodded and walked back into their shared bedroom to pump some more.

Santana walked back downstairs to warm up his bottle, hoping that he didn't start crying before she could finish. She grabbed the bottle from the fridge and ran the warm water in the sink. All the while, Mario was held in one arm, carefully being rocked so that he remained calm. Santana let the bottle sit under the warm water for about a minute before turning the water off.

Just as she went to check the temperature of the bottle, Mario started whining loudly. "Shh, mijo. Mami's almost done." Santana tried, but Mario was having none of it. Santana lightly rocked him while trying her best to check the bottle. After a minute, Mario's whines turned into full cries.

"Need any help?" Julia asked from behind them. Santana turned and looked at her sister.

"Um, sure. Can you check to see if this is warm enough?" Santana gestured to the bottle on the table while she tried to calm Mario down.

"Yeah." Julia grabbed the bottle and shook it before she poured a little on her arm. "It's fine." Julia told Santana.

"Thank you." Santana said genuinely. She grabbed the bottle and placed it in Mario's mouth. He sucked happily on his bottle, calm now that his mom was feeding him.

"San?" Julia called after a minute of silence.

"What?"

"I'm sorry." Julia sighed. Santana looked at her sister with a confused look. "I'm sorry for making you feel unloved. I was just an asshole. When you first came out, I couldn't stand the fact that you liked girls. I hated that my sister, the one person that looked up to me, wasn't exactly like me. I panicked."

"That's not an excuse."

"Santana, I-."

"No. You had a chance to be there for me, but you chose to be judgmental. I looked up to you as a mentor, as a sister. You were the one that pushed me away."

"I know, and I'm so sorry. I know now that I was dumb. I love you, Santana. You're my baby sister. The same one that I helped learn her ABCs and that I helped sound out words that she couldn't read. I was such a bitch, and you did nothing wrong."

"Julia-."

"No Santana. I want to say that I'm sorry for everything. You were my best friend. I was quick to turn away like Abuela. I'm so sorry." Julia said as her eyes filled with tears.

Santana's face turned sympathetic. She could tell that Julia was being sincere. She also knew that, like herself, Julia didn't cry much.

"And, when I found out that you were thinking about not even letting me meet Mario, I was so ashamed. I pushed you so far that you weren't going to let me meet your son. What kind of sister am I? I'm the worst sister on the planet."

"Julia, you're not the worst sister on the planet. Am I going to lie and say that I didn't hate you for all that you did? No, but I do accept your apology. I still love you, and Mario will too." Santana smiled.

"Thank you. Thank you so much for giving me another chance."

"You're welcome. Just please don't ruin it. Rachel doesn't play around when it comes to Mario. Neither do I."

"I promise I won't." Julia stated.

"Also, you must be here for every birthday, Christmas, and Easter to get to know him. I don't want you to be some distant memory that he has to ask about when he's older. If you're going to be a part of his life, you have to be there. Promise?"

"I promise." Julia confirmed, walking closer to her sister and lightly touching Mario's hair.

"He's amazing."

"I know." Santana smiled.

After Santana and Julia talked for a little while, catching up, Mario had fallen asleep. "I'm gonna go put him in his crib, and spend some time with Rachel."

"Alright. Good night." Julia smiled.

"Good night." Santana walked up stairs and to her room. Julia watched and quietly pulled out her phone.

"Hola." A voice answered from the other side.

"Abuela."

"Julia? It's late, why are you calling?"

"You need to fix things with Santana."

"What?"

"Abuela, Mario is amazing. You're missing out on your only great grandchild's life. Santana is so happy, and I know that you want to see that."

"Julia, mind your business." Alma spat before hanging up the phone. Julia sighed heavily. This was going to be hard.
