When the Dead Come Knocking
Ingrid was kneeling by her mother, helping get her cleaned up, in the cramped cell Daryl had taken her to. Too worried about Carol to do more than give him a hug, she had hurried to tend to her exhausted, dehydrated mom. Daryl had left a short time ago, and she had heard some commotion in the cell block, but couldn't remove herself from Carol. Now she heard footsteps behind her, and turned to see the rest of the group wedging themselves into the cell. Shane and Felicia were among them.
Felicia, Shane, and Michonne strode purposefully and unflinchingly (well, mostly unflinchingly) toward the mesh fence enclosing the prison yard, all three so covered in blood and filth that the Walkers didn't even seem to notice them; they were too busy ogling the group of survivors that had just emerged from the prison. Felicia squinted, trying to see who it was. A tall, lanky guy was walking close to someone much smaller- Rick with Carl, maybe? Yes- as the two of them caught sight of the flock of Walkers and drew closer, this became clear. There were others with them.
As Rick approached the fence on the other side, only a few yards from them, he seemed unable to believe his eyes. Michonne, Shane, and Felicia stood there stoically, facing him, as his eyes moved from one to the next. There was a long silence as those on either side absorbed the reunion, but Shane was the one to break the silence in the end. "Hey, Rick."
Michonne, having been put in a cell for the time being, was no longer with them, but Shane and Felicia barely even registered this as they were rejoined with the rest of the group. The other survivors had come to investigate these newcomers, and Felicia and Shane were now swamped with greetings from Hershel, Daryl, Beth, and Carl. "I can't believe it", "what happened?", and "it's so great to see you" were among the most popular phrases. Felicia was completely into the tears and the hugging, and Shane, for all his prickliness, was even showing affection.
Rick had hung back, but Shane took the initiative, disengaging himself from the tangle of companions and hugging him, manly pride be damned. Rick seemed a little taken aback, but reciprocated just the same. Shane pulled him aside and they had some conversation Felicia couldn't hear- likely about Lori and the baby- but the meaning was clear: I'm sorry. I missed you. You're my friend. I've moved on. Baby or no baby, you're more important… We've both changed. Now let's fix this.
Felicia, thrilled at this seeming reconciliation, was pulled away yet again, this time along with the others, when Daryl announced that there was something they needed to see. Rick and Shane followed, both looking more at peace than she'd seen in a long time.
