Hell-o once again! I'm back with an awesome longer chapter, a week early! How lucky are you guys ;)
So this chapter is a sort of cosy chapter, not much action, more describing Loki's body and Sigyn's negotiational side :D YAY! I have also had a massive cry (because I've been down lately) and I'm feeling very happy and can hold off the tears for another month and a half!
Song that inspired this nugget of my mind/chapter: Paramore- Caught Myself
Enjoy!
Haunt me chapter 4- Sweet thorn
"Fury, would it be a burden if I could speak to you in private?" I asked, curtsying. He nodded and gestured for me to have a seat. We were completely alone, save Agent Hill.
"Agent, would you mind?" Fury asked, not bothering to look up and acknowledge her. He seemed distracted, worried. Agent Hill nodded and left.
"What's up Sigyn?" He still didn't look up.
"I wanted to talk to you about Loki." I began nervously. He paused in writing, looking up at me with his eye.
"Go on." He said cautiously. I swallowed loudly.
"I don't expect you to understand, but I feel so alone and sad when not in his company. That rage I had today with Tony stemmed from the fact that I had not spent enough time in his company. I worry for my own health. He is like one of your Midgardian drugs." I continued, struggling to explain my feelings. However he seemed to understand.
"Where are you going with this?" He asked, suspicious.
"Well, I couldn't help overhearing yesterday that SHIELD owns several safe houses. I asked Tony what they were, and he told me it was a house that is under control so people have freedom and are under surveillance. You said yourself the other day that you thought Loki has been behaving exceptionally well…" I trailed off to let him digest all I had said. He nodded, taking my words into consideration.
"Well, I was wondering… would you consider putting Loki and I in a safe house? Isn't there one here, next to the base?" I asked. There was a long pause- the room was silent.
"You have obviously thought hard about your request. Loki is a dangerous being- letting him out of my control would be career ending." He said. My heart sank- he was going to reject my request.
"But-"
"I haven't finished. Loki has been incredibly well behaved; his outburst yesterday was the first issue we've had with him in half a year. The safe house you speak of has CCTV surveillance and has complete protection. You would be trapped in the house unless let out by a SHIELD agent." He said. I considered this- should Loki accept my offer he would have to be aware he would be only a small deal freer then when he was in the cage.
"Very well. If he has no issue with staying in said house, may we?"
"I see no problem with it. The CCTV surveillance will only turn on when it detects the levels of radiation your magic gives off, so try and avoid using magic, because you're then put on CCTV to check that you're not escaping." He explained with a small smile. My heart sank- no magic?
"Loki might not like that…" I trailed off in sadness.
"I'm not saying you're not allowed to use magic, I'm simply saying that we're watching what magic you're using. We use a special monitor to detect radiation- if you use a transportation spell Thor explained to us, it will not work, because we've fitted the house with a radiation crippler." He explained further. Relieved, a smile crept back onto my face.
"Oh, that is perfectly fine. May I see Loki and ask him if he will come?" I asked. I felt aggravated about having to ask to see Loki, but I wouldn't have to endure it much longer if he agreed.
"Sure. You lead the way- I'll catch you up." He said, gesturing to the papers stacked in front of him. With an understanding and sympathetic smile, I walked out of the room and down the confusing corridors. I was beginning to learn the different routes leading to Loki. A mere two minutes later and I stood before him once again. I felt at peace in front of him. And I forced myself in my mind to ask the question I avoided previously. Is this love? I didn't know. I was always confused by the idea of love. What defines love?
"Sigyn…" he breathed, with a smile.
"What is on your mind, sweet thorn?" He asked. My heart swelled to hear my old alias. Loki and I once played in Queen Frigga's garden- and I cut myself on a thorn. I was proud of the cut, because I considered it a battle scar. Loki called me "sweet thorn" from then on.
"Trickster, I came to make a proposition with you." I began, striding forward to the glass.
"I will listen." He said, tilting his head backwards, his eyes still fixed on mine.
"Fury has offered a special house that will give us privacy. There will be no other people there- just you… and I." I continued, placing a hand on the glass.
"This sounds promising- but there is a condition, yes?" I nodded- my breathing shaky.
"We will be watched on CCTV if we use magic. They have special radiation monitors that detect our magic. And transportation spells won't work outside the house- we can transport to other places in the house, but not leave it. And if we want to get out we have to press a button so an agent can release us and let us into the base." I explained, my eyes shutting to recall the conditions exactly. I opened my eyes fearfully- I was unsure of what he would think. He smiled my smile, and placed a hand on the glass in the same position as mine.
"Can't we just kill them all and run?" He said, jesting. I hoped it was a jest, anyway. I acknowledged his hopeful question with a laugh.
"No, we have to play it Midgardian style." I said with a heavy sigh. Fury entered, clearing his throat as he walked. Loki stiffened and dropped his hand. He looked like he was debating with himself- he was fighting an internal struggle- not even I could assist.
"Loki, stop it." I whispered, thumping the glass gently. His emerald eyes flashed with an unrecognisable emotion before returning to the present. Fury raised his eyebrow.
"If you're quite finished with your epic battle, have you decided if you're gonna go through with this proposal?" He asked, tapping at the control pad.
"Yes, I would very much like to inhabit this safe house you speak of." He said; his tone was icy cool. It sent shivers down my spine.
"Very good, I approve. It was very mature of her to suggest it." I blushed- Loki wasn't aware that I'd thought of the idea- I told him Fury suggested it.
"Oh- I wasn't aware she suggested it. She told me it was you who stemmed the idea." He said, turning his emerald gaze to me. He wasn't too pleased- he didn't appreciate being lied to.
"Well I didn't want you to think of me as a love struck fool."
"Too late." He hissed, before snapping his gaze back to Fury. Guiltily, I puzzled over another issue- how was Fury going to escort Loki to the safe house? My jaw dropped when I saw the shackles and gag Fury held.
"Thor gave me these to use should I ever have to move him." He explained.
"You can't just treat him like an animal! That is disgusting!" I cried, stepping back as Fury approached Loki. I admired Loki's courage- he stood his ground and didn't flinch. The glass slid open, and there was nothing preventing Loki from murdering Fury.
"Loki… please do not trouble me." Fury said, slowly approaching to put the shackles on. Loki still didn't speak or move.
"I can't watch this." I said, walking out of the room. A moment or two later, Fury came out of the room, Loki accompanying him. Loki looked rather miserable- he was gagged at the mouth, and shackled. My heart constricted with the guilt I felt for him. I followed Fury to the safe house, and tried to avoid Loki's eyes. We went outside of the SHIELD base, and round the corner. There stood a quaint but modern house. It was white plastered, with many glass windows and a red door.
"I have never been in a house before." I admitted.
"Well, that's about to change." Fury said abruptly. Feeling like a helpless child again, I looked down ashamed. There was a small snort that came from beside me- I looked to see who found my predicament amusing. It was Loki- he seemed to find my sensitivity humorous. I glared at him before turning to look ahead at the house we rapidly approached.
"Okay kids, here's your home. Just to recap- no transportation, no mischief, no annoying issues for me to get up off my ass and deal with. Got it?" He said- his tone was agitated.
"You have my…" I turned to study Loki's face- he seemed complacent enough, despite the gag and shackles.. "…Our word." I finished off my sentence. With a final glare of warning at Loki, he removed the gag from his mouth. I breathed a sigh of relief- I was unable to relax when he looked so miserable. I waited for a steady flow of insults and anger to stream from his lips, but instead we were greeted with silence. Pleasantly surprised, I smiled confidently at Fury who smiled back, at ease. I decided it was better if Fury thought he was just suddenly happy, and that I was not emotionally manipulating him. Which I was. The house was surrounded by thick wire that jabbed in all directions- a foreboding and painful form of protection. We went through an extremely thick door that Fury took pride in explaining.
"This is my pride and joy- it's 6 parts iron and 4 parts Adamantium, a virtually indestructible metal that is used in Cap's shield." I nodded, pretending I understood what he was talking about. Loki leaned in to whisper in my ear.
"Fury's telling us that the door cannot be destroyed or opened without several different key combinations. The captain of America uses a shield made of the same metal, which I had the misfortune of coming into battle with. I still have the scars." He explained.
"Thank you trickster." I whispered back, grateful to have an ally. His gesture reminded me that I wasn't alone, and that someone else understood me. He nodded with an audacious wink. A delicate blush rose to my cheeks, and that seemed to make Loki's smile wider. We entered the house through the quaint red door. Inside it was neat, with white walls and wooden flooring. It looked very hospitable. I was impressed, but I was yet to see what Loki would think. I cast a glance to where he stood, a dark and enigmatic figure that contrasted perfectly with the white room. Despite the shackles, he looked mighty, like a true king. His emerald eyes glanced around the room. His black hair flowed behind his head and jutted out to the sides at the ends. He stood tall, his height towering over Fury. I observed that the cuts and bruises were healing rapidly. Soon there would be no trace of any injuries sustained from attempts of ruling this miserable realm.
"What do you think of this house?" I asked, my eyes searching his face fearfully. With a small smile, he turned to meet me squarely in the eye.
"I think it is very worthy of having two gods live in it." I smiled in relief- why was I always seeking Loki's approval? Was I unable to make my own decisions and have my own opinions without fearing his wrath? My smile dropped at my thoughts. What a confusing mind I have. I thought.
"Are you okay? You seem to be upset." Fury interjected, ripping me of my reverie.
"Yes thank you, just thinking about something. It is no matter." I assured, forcing myself to smile. Who would have thought it would be so difficult to smile? Fury was content with my brush off of his question, but Loki wasn't satisfied. He shot me a questioning look, but I simply ignored it. Make my own decisions. I scorned myself.
"Well, if that's all I'll leave you to get settled and argue over rooms. Good day. Oh Sigyn, Natasha will visit in a few hours to arrange wardrobe. You can't live in that dress forever." Fury reminded. With a nod, I walked away to investigate other rooms, desperate to distract myself of the thoughts I inflicted upon myself. Fury left, slamming the door harshly. My ears throbbed with the unnecessary sound. Despite my thoughts, at the back of my mind I wondered where Loki was and what emotional state he was in. Why couldn't I just stop being such a child about it? How hard could it be to just be a mature adult and live on this desperate rock?
"You are discontent- and that unsettles me." A smooth voice spoke in my ear. I jumped forward with a squeak. Catching my breath, I turned to face him. He was unnaturally close- he was usually much further away from others.
"Sorry about that- you startled me. I wasn't aware you approached."
"You are distracted- normally you would have heard me." Loki observed. With a deep inhalation, I looked him in the eyes. He had beautiful eyes- they always said that the eyes were the windows to the soul. Even when he looked content, the hurt still glistened there.
"I love this- it's no palace but it'll definitely do well in the meantime." I said, changing the subject. I disliked attention.
"Even after all this time, after all our knowledge over each other, I still find you a mystery to me. When will you open up to me?" He asked, stepping back to admire some of the artwork hanging on the walls.
"White suits you well when you wear dark clothes." I continued, admiring a painting of hills and blue sky and white fluffy animals grazing the blades of grass. The painting was serene. With a sigh, Loki turned to face me again.
"I will win- I never lose." He warned.
"Do not challenge me." I countered, my tone bored. His eyes darkened, and a small seed of fear planted itself in the base of my spine and crawled up my back, sending Goosebumps rising to the top of my skin.
"Well, if I scare you so, I should have no issue winning." He teased.
"You do not scare me. Nothing scares me." I said bravely, my eyes squarely on his. With a snort, he stalked away.
"Pride comes before a fall." He muttered.
"You should swallow that phrase yourself." I responded. With a sigh, I sat down on a comfortable seeming seat. It was very soft on my back. I appreciated softness- I couldn't deal with more sharpness. Loki was bad enough. If we were to argue at all, with my ferocity and his silver tongue, the foundations of the house we lived in would not last.
