"You know, up until two days ago, I used to wish I had a love like Stefan and Elena's. An epic love that would last forever." Caroline said, as she sat at the bar in Mystic Grill with Klaus by her side. They seemed to be there together a lot. She would sit down at the bar, and then he would be by her side not moments afterwards.
Klaus looked at her.
"What stopped that?"
"Their love isn't an epic love, is it? Not if it's been preordained by some witch. Doppelgängers are destined to find each other and fall in love. It kinda takes away the romance from it, doesn't it? They had no choice in it. Stefan and Elena were always going to fall in love. No matter what. It kind of changes their whole story."
"No love story is perfect, Caroline. Every romance has some fault. If you do remember, you used to hate me, love." Klaus pointed out to her, and she rolled her eyes at him, before sipping on her vodka and coke.
"We aren't in a love story, Klaus." She said, smiling at him in a way that told him differently. She may not realise it but she always had this soft look in her eyes when she looked at him.
"That's your opinion, love, but don't all your romantic comedies begin with the girl hating the bad boy? And doesn't he always change for her? That is us, Caroline."
Caroline looked at him, feeling a certain resonance that came with his words. Klaus wasn't right...or was he? She didn't hate him anymore, and she did try to help him be a better person...when he was in the mood for it. He let Tyler live, didn't he? He'd saved her on more than one occasion, and he stopped creating his hybrids because she hated him for trying to drain her best friend's blood supply, and he stopped randomly snapping the necks of Stefan or Damon. He had really changed since he had first came to town. And deep down Caroline knew that it was because of her.
He'd changed for her because he was in love with her.
She wasn't sure when it had happened, but he was. And she knew that the feelings that she had for him weren't exactly platonic. She pushed them down and pretended they weren't there, because the alternative was admitting to herself and then her friends that they existed. And she knew that wouldn't go down well. Klaus had caused them so much pain, but she couldn't help how she felt. It was like Damon and Elena. Damon hurt so many people, but Elena still fell in love with him.
"Maybe you're right." She replied.
