More Truth and A Few Answers

When Audrey awoke, both Julia and Nathan were too close. She pushed her hair out of her face, forcing a smile to show the others she was alright. "What happened?"

"You passed out. Luckily Nathan was hovering so close or you would have smacked your head on the floor. He's going to take you home and watch over you. Obviously, I want you to rest, and no chasing any bad guys until this is all over." She waited for Audrey to nod before continuing. "Now I want you to take these vitamins, as well as eat every few hours and drink plenty of water. Your body is going through horrendous transitions right now and you're going to need all the calories and fluids you can get."

Audrey looked over at Nathan, who looked grim. Reaching out, she took his hand. "I'm going to be all right. Julia's going to make sure of that. She's going to do all she can for me and the baby. Have a little faith."

Julia nodded. "If our time line is right, that should be Friday. I'll need you to come in tomorrow and I'll introduce you to Dr. Franklin, the local OBGyn. He's lived here long enough to understand that this is a very special case. If I had to guess that he might suggest a C-section."

Nodding, Audrey took the slip of paper.

Now do you want to do a DNA test or any other form of testing?"

"No, I want this baby and I don't care about any of that." Audrey told Julia as she looked over at Nathan who nodded.

Julia made a few notes in Audrey's file. "Okay then. You two can go now. If anything happens in the meantime, call me and I'll call Dr. Franklin in. Until this baby comes, I don't want you to be alone."

By the time they arrived at Nathan's house, Audrey was asleep, leaning against Nathan's shoulder.

Nathan gathered her into his arms and he carried her inside, enjoying the feel of her. He place her in his bed and left the room, closing the door.

Standing upright again, Nathan resigned himself to calling the station to talk to the Chief, his, and tell him what had happened before Garland heard it from an outside source.

Lavern picked up the mainline and he could hear the laughter in her voice when said she hoped the two of them had fun. Having no other response, Nathan asked Lavern to transfer him to the Chief's office.

The seconds passed slowly, before Nathan finally heard him pick up. "Chief, I'm taking the week off. I have the time banked up."

"Well son, I've told you before that you work too hard. What are you planning to do with yourself?"

Nathan clenched the phone and realized this was going to be harder than he thought. "I need to see you. Can you come over? I have something I need to tell you, in person."

Garland let out a sigh and Nathan pictured him rubbing his brow. "Nathan, does this have anything to do with Audrey?" "

"Don't lecture me, just come over here." Nathan stopped and then continued heavily, " I need you, Dad, please."

"I'll be right over." The Chief mutter then the connection went dead.

Nathan paced the floor back and forth wondering just how he'd explain this mess. A full five minutes later the doorbell rang and he knew it was time to face the music, no matter how off-key.

Garland Wuornos stood on his son's doorstep and realized that this was the first time he'd been to this house. He lifted his hand, rang the bell, and waited.

His relationship with his son had been rocky for a very long time. In fact, he couldn't even remember the last time his son had called him "Dad". He was surprised how much pain he felt when he heard that word again after its long absence. When Nathan had said it on the phone a few minutes earlier, he'd felt something inside of him mend..

That one word had brought Garland closer to tears than he had been in a long, long time. In someway, it gave Garland hope that he finally might find a way to end this chaos. Audrey had returned to Haven; he hoped that this time they would succeed.

The front door swung open and Nathan ushered him inside. "Want some coffee?"

Garland shook his head. "No, thank you. Why don't you cut to the chase, son?"

Nathan tucked his hands into the front pocket of his pants. "Audrey's pregnant."

Whatever Garland expected, that wasn't it. "What kinda stupid thing did you do, son? I know we never talked about that stuff, but I figured you knew how to be careful."

He could see Nathan's hackles rising before his eyes and Garland wished he'd kept his mouth shut.

"It wasn't like that!" Nathan stopped, looked down the hall where Audrey was sleeping and dropped his voice. "I called you to get your help, not your criticism. Now are you-"

"Nathan, you can be incredibly loud. In fact, I think the dead down the street heard you."

Both men stared as Audrey waddled into view.

"What the-" Garland shut his mouth and turned to look at his son as the blood drained from his face. "You've been chosen haven't you?"

Nathan eyed him warily. "That was what the old woman said last night."

Garland looked at Audrey again and swallowed. "You mean this just happened last night? I heard stories about how quickly it happened. With your mother it happened fast but not this quickly..." He swallowed. "How are you feeling?"

"What do you mean with mom?"

Garland tugged at his collar and shifted his feet as he studied the sky outside the window. He looked up at Nathan and answered him gravely. "I never meant for you to find out this way, son, but I suppose it's best to get it all out. I wanted to tell you, but I was afraid of your reaction because we were never close. I know that was my fault, but I never really knew what to do. I'm not your father, Nathan. Max Hansen, your real father, was sent to prison and I took you in after your mother's death. I raised my sister's son to the best of my ability. I should have known this would happen, but I always hoped it wouldn't-" Garland sighed as he reached out for Nathan. "I'm sorry, son, I really am."
