Author's Note: Sorry I haven't been posting but I haven't had much energy lately. I am expecting my seventh child, yes that is seven. I actually wrote this three years ago when I was pregnant with number six. I alway seem to write a pregnant story, anyway. Also I haven't been getting any notifications from this site. I just went to the reviews and found out a bunch of you have left them. I'm so sorry if I had known I might have pushed myself a little more to get things done. I do have this story all done, I just have to get off my bottom and finish the final clean up. I don't know if I will have time to do that today but I will do it soon.

I promise I will be very diligent in my post from here on even though I'm behind in my NaNoWriMo. Also I've been galvanized by the start of season 4 here in Canada and I'm loving it so far even if it's only one episdoe. Leave a review, I will check and answer if I'm able. Thanks for reading.

No More Sorries

"What do you mean you're sorry? You expect me just stand there and watch her die? I'm not giving up on her. I love her." Nathan shouted as he pushed Garland chest causing the man to almost tip over.

"You think I wanted this for her? She doesn't deserve this; no one does. I had to watch my baby sister suffer through one of these pregnancies and die. I would have done anything to spare you this, but there is nothing I can do. It's been this way for centuries; there's no changing it all now."

"Yes there is. As soon as this baby is viable the doctor will deliver by C-section. Maybe breaking the cycle will change things here in Haven as well. Did you ever think that allowing this to happen might be the cause of all the Troubles? We need to stand up and fight, not roll over and let those we love die. It's time to stop treading water and try something else."

Garland knew Nathan had a point, but he couldn't stop the words from tumbling out of his mouth. "Now just a minute. I didn't roll over. It all happened so fast there was nothing I could do to help your mother. If I could have traded places with her I would have. She was a much better person than I would ever be."

Nathan went still at Garland's words, as Audrey stepped between them. "Stop it both of you! This isn't helping anyone. The two of you are going to have to come to some kind of agreement because this baby is coming out in the next few days and I may or may not live to see or hold it. If the worst happens, Nathan, you are going to need your father's help, so let's let him tell us what he knows."

Nathan continued staring at Garland, but he followed her request down on the couch.

"That's better." With a smile, Audrey lowered herself down next to Nathan and both of them looked up at Garland.

The older man ran his hand through his hair, flustered. " Nathan, you know about the Guardians, you've heard the stories. Well, when they die, they are replaced with another after a new child is born. It's happened this way since the Troubles began. The mothers never survive."

Nathan opened his mouth but Audrey applied a gentle pressure to his. "Continue please, Garland and sit down. You are welcome here anytime. You are our daughter's only grandparent, after all."

Shock covered Garland's face. "It's a girl? These babies are never girls." He sat down in the armchair next to the couch, and looked up at the pair. ". Maybe your little girl will save you, Audrey."

"We're not giving up." Nathan linked hands with Audrey. "I'm not letting her go."

"No I don't suspect you will. I'll leave you to alone now. If you need me just call and I'll come a running." Garland got to his feet.

He gathered his coat and headed for the front door. "'Night, Nathan, Audrey. And congratulations. I really hope..." He paused, unshed tears in his eyes. "I'll see you on Saturday."

Nathan followed his father outside.

Audrey paced Nathan's small living room as Nathan said goodbye to Garland. Her hand moved down to the slight bulge of her stomach. Suddenly, she felt movement.

Tears prick at her eyes; her little girl moved again, as though saying hello. Audrey felt an overwhelming sense of love wash over her; she knew that no matter what happened to her; this baby would be loved and she would never be alone. And through her child, some Audrey Parker would.

In the next breath, she accepted that this really was happening. Nathan's baby was growing inside of her and in a few days she'd either be dead or holding her little girl in her arms.

She wasn't giving up, but she had to make sure that Nathan would come through this alright. If she died Nathan needed to be able to move forward with his life, for their child and for himself..

Soon she was crying in earnest, tears running down her face, as she watched Nathan come up the sidewalk. She knew that Nathan had hoped his father would offer some sort of solution, some guarantee that she would live. There wasn't one. Instead, there was only the confirmation that fate was playing with them.

That didn't mean they had to follow the rules. Turning away from the window, she tried to wipe away the evidence of her tears in case Nathan misunderstood the reason she was crying.

The door closed and she turned to see Nathan standing there. He looked so strong and she knew he'd move heaven and Earth to stop her from dying, but this was out of his hands and he had to see that. If he failed and she died it, she needed him to know that it was his fault.

She felt the minutes ticking away with each of her.

Nathan moved across the room, worry etched on his features. "What's wrong, Audrey?"

"Nathan-" Audrey shook her head. "They're happy tears. Just … feel our daughter." She reached out taking his hand; it was freezing, but she ignored the icy touch on her bare belly. She covered his hand with her own and leaned against his body hoping the contact would help him feel the baby move so they could share this moment.

One minute went by and then another. Audrey was beginning to think that she had imagined the movement, and then it happened again. It was almost undetectable, but Nathan's face lit up as their little girl moved - the lightest thump against their hands.

Nathan smiled. "She's really in there.."

Audrey laid her head down on his chest. "Yes, she is, and I guess she can't wait to meet us because she's going to make an appearance sooner rather than later."

"Do you have a name picked out?" Nathan asked playing with her hair close to her ear.

"Lucy Sarah." She told him reaching out to take his other hand. "I don't know. It just seems right. Will you make sure if I die-"

He pulled back and took hold of her shoulders. "I'm going to let you die. I promise you. After we see this other doctor and we'll know more. I won't let you go, you're not getting off that easily."

"The last thing I want to do is leave the two of you, but weneed to be prepare , because my death is a possibility. In a few days' time I might be dead and you may have adaughter to take care of alone."

"No, we need you here. "

Audrey stepped closer to Nathan, placing her hand over his heart. She felt it speed up as he placed his hand over hers. "I've been alone for as long as I can remember. I learned not to let people in. Then I met you. Somehow Nathan, with you it's easy ." She touched his cheek with her free hand. "Nathan, you are very important to me and I don't want to go anywhere-. She took a deep breath. "But we have to prepare for the eventuality that I may not survive this pregnancy."

"Audrey-" Nathan started to speak but she placed her finger on his lips.

"No, Nathan, you can't hold on to me too tightly; life is dangerous. I could get hit by a car tomorrow and die."

Nathan cupped her face. "I'm not going to worry about tomorrow, because it's not here and you are. " He bent his head down and kissed her.
