Author's Note: One more chapter after this one. I plan to post it on Thursday but we'll have to see how that day goes. For now enjoy.
What's Done Is Done
Nathan carried Audrey onto the elevator. He needed help and that meant Julia and Duke.
Two nurses approached him, and responded immediately to the sight of Audrey's bloodstained gown. "What happened to her?"
"An emergency C-section. Page Doctor Carr. One nurse stepped forward lifting her stethoscope, but Nathan only tightened his grip on Audrey and stepped back, repeating, "Page Doctor Carr and I need you to find our children."
"All right. I'll page her."
Audrey spoke for the first time. "Downstairs there was a nurse, she took the children from me downstairs. She was coming up here, to the maternity ward. We have to find them, the boy wasn't healthy-"
The second nurse responded, "That's good to know. I will go and see if I can locate them. I saw Judy just a few minutes ago heading to the assessment room. Why don't you take Audrey in that room?" She pointed to an open door down the hall. "It's post-op and just been cleaned and we will locate Doctor Carr. We may need to do some repair work and please try not to move anymore, ma'am."
Nathan stopped in the doorway. "I think I can trust you, Ellie. No one enters this room until Doctor Carr arrives except Chief Wuornos and Duke Crocker. Nathan backed into the room never taking his eyes off the people in the hall and laid Audrey down on the bed pulling the covers up around her.
She reached out for his hand. "It will be all right.. Garland and Duke will find the kids."
He caught Audrey's hand bringing it to his cheek. "I'm sure they will. The children are here in the hospital for now. We just have to be patient. We have to get you taken care of right now."
She looked up at him, nodded her agreement and then looked at him questioningly, studying him. "Can you feel again, not just me?"
Nathan pulled at his t-shirt collar with his free hand. He still didn't feel quite right in his skin and he wondered how long it would take before feeling became just a part of life. "Yes, not quite used to feeling my own skin; I'd forgotten what it was like."
"So it's true then, the Troubles are gone. If Baldwin was correct and his people really have been the source, they're gone for good. Stopping them, must have rebalanced this town." She paused and then said with a shadow of disbelief. "Could it really be that simple?"
Nathan sat down beside her on the bed. "I don't know, but it makes an odd kind of sense. Our children will never have to deal with them, this town won't. Audrey, we'll be free."
The both looked up as Julia arrived, out of breath and carrying her medical bag. "I couldn't believe it when I heard, but I saw Garland on the way up here. He was taking Dr. Baldwin down for processing. This is insane, even for Haven." She approached Audrey. "Are you okay?"
"I think he stitched me back up again, but I'm not sure. It was all so quick. Nathan thought you should have a look."
"Let me scrub up and I'll get to work." When she returned, Julia's sure hands lifted part of the sheet and began to examine the c-section stitches. "It looks like a standard repair, we'll run an MRI to confirm, though." She looked at Audrey. "What do you want to do?"
"Do what you need to do Julia. I'm not going to let this compromise my health. I'll need to be ready when they find my kids." Audrey reached out to take Nathan's hand. "They need me as does Nathan."
"Audrey, Nathan," Julia's face was full of concern and regret. "I'm sorry. I'm so very sorry. If I'd have known. I never…." She trailed off .
"There was no way you could have known, Julia. This is not your fault."
"Any word on the children?" Julia asked.
Nathan and Audrey shook their head and Audrey reached for Nathan's hand. "I should be out there helping find them but I know I can't. This is where I have to be, I have to get better if I want to survive this. I'm not good to them dead."
"That's right you'll be no good to us dead. Duke and Garland will find them. Just try to relax and as soon as possible we'll get you in for that MRI. Meanwhile we'll start you on an IV – antibiotics, fluids, the works."
She motioned to a nurse at the door to come in and shot a small not to Nathan and Audrey. Nathan stepped aside, as the nurse inserted the IV's and busied herself with Audrey's care.
Julia stepped to Nathan's side. " Nathan, is it true? I have had people telling me their Troubles are gone. Is the same for you?"
"It seems to be. I think whatever the Hanson's were doing was setting nature off, and to compensate the Troubles appeared.. Now that the amulet is destroyed, the Troubles seem to have been as well."
She patted Audrey's leg. "I'll be back as soon as we find your babies."
Nathan and Audrey waited a few more minutes before the waiting became unbearable and Nathan paced agitatedly, "Should I go and see if I can help find them?"
On cue, the door opened and Duke entered. "I think I found something that belongs to you." He said almost fondly, stopping at Audrey's bedside with the bassinet. The two infants slept inside, curled up against each other. Nathan clapped Duke on the back and moved to pull his children into his arms, grinning widely with relief.. "I think they do. Where did you find them!"
"I followed Nurse Hansen up the elevator, but it took me awhile before I could get the drop on her. By that time, the whole hospital was on alert, so I had to prove to them I wasn't a baby snatcher. It was Julia who finally sprung me." He stopped as Nathan placed one of the baby's in Audrey's arms. "What's her name?"
Audrey took the little girl from Nathan. "Lucy Prudence and the boy is Thaddeus Duke."
Nathan shifted to sit next to her,.
Duke shifted his feet while rubbing the back of his neck. "Well, I'll be going now. Let me know if you need anything." He waved, but neither of them looked up from their children or heard the door close.
Nathan bent his head down and kissed Audrey. "I love you, Parker. "I love you too, Nathan Thaddeus Wuornos," Audrey said cheekily, touching his face. " She paused, looking in awe at their children, then addressed her daughter, ,as she lay curled in her arms Nathan wrapped his free arm around her shoulder, before she spoke, the beginnings of tears in her eyes, Looks like you two have your whole lives ahead of you, and your daddy and I have some lost time to make up for."
