After the girls had awoken, we found out that they, too, had lost all memory. They had no recollection of anything beyond the four walls that were in their line of sight. Minho, Alby, and Newt had gone to some other room in the homestead to discuss what was happening. Before they left they gave me the job of "getting to know them". I went around with a pad of paper and a really small pencil that must've been used a thousand times and collected names.
The first of the seven I went up to told me her name was Dorothy. She had long, thick, brown hair. It flowed down past her shoulder. Her little, button nose fit her short figure. One thing stood out, though. She was emaciated. It was as if she hadn't been fed for weeks. Her eyes were a sharp, bright green. Her voice was small and child-like. She looked as though she was the youngest of them all. 13 maybe. The next girl, Jocie, was the complete opposite. She told me that she preferred to go by Jo. She was actually quite muscular but still managed to look pretty feminine. Her eyes were a light brown. Her hair was in braid down her back. It was an unnatural shade of dark red. It was a very pretty red, but you could see that her naturally dirty-blonde hair was already pushing its way to the surface. She was taller than I was, but then again, many people are. Emily was overall pretty average. Her height was average. Her build was average. Her hair and eyes were the things distinguishing her from just another girl. The bright blonde was cut in a disheveled pixie cut. It went beautifully with her light, pale, blue eyes. Then I met eyes with a darker-skinned girl. I almost got lost in large golden spheres. There was another world working away within them. Flowing rivers of gold. Walking and talking golden crowds strolling down the golden streets. Then they were gone. All of them. She was looking towards the ground now. Her black hair abruptly ended at her shoulders and in her left ear was a golden hoop that reflected the little light we had in the room. The hoop was matched her eyes exa-
"Cleo"
"What?" I was still lost in her eyes. I probably looked like an idiot. Great first impression, Rose.
"Cleo. My name is Cleo."
"Oh, yeah, sorry. I got distracted." She blushed and let out a soft giggle. And in that moment, I, too, begin to blush. Wow, am I great at first impressions or what? The next girl was tall and thin. She had long, wavy hair. It was dark just as her eyes were. She had a light tan. I stood there and awaited her name but it never came. Then she reached out her hand and softly took my pad of paper. She looked at the pencil, so I handed it to her. When I got the pad and pencil back she had written her name and a note.
Bella
I've tried talking, but it just doesn't work. I have one memory. I don't see anything, but I can hear someone saying "The swipe may have interfered with her ability to verbally communicate". I don't know what any of it means, but I thought you'd want to know.
I nodded to her, inwardly sympathizing her loss of voice, and moved to the next girl. Elise was tall and thin. Tight, miniscule, thick, orange curls draped down her back. Freckles made their home on her nose and below her hazel-green eyes. She spoke her name quickly as to get it over with. Before I had even turned to see the next girl she had already told me her name was Skaya. She was the tallest of them all. The first thing I saw when she finally was in my line of sight was a dark burn scar over her right eye. The eye was grey, bringing me to the conclusion that it was blind. Her left eye was dark enough to engulf in its abyss. Her coal-black hair cascaded down to her waist. It was and as if it had just been straightened. She had a femininely muscular build that I quite admired. She glared at me as I wrote down her name. I went through and made sure I had remembered which names corresponded with which girl and sat and talked with them a while. I told them about the maze. And the grievers. And how I was the first girl. And how they were completely out of place both because of their gender and their odd timing. The entire time they listened intently. The next morning I was ordered to show them the peephole that allowed you to safely observe the other side. I had never showed anyone before so as I drifted off into the night, I dreamed of the maze and the monsters that roamed it.
