Y6: The END in Friend
The first we had gone by in a blur. She had a prefect meeting already on something she hadn't paid attention to and then she spent the rest of her time in the Library reading books on what would be covered this year. Lily was stuck working with Malfoy on the stupid Slughorn project. Because she guessed all the potions correctly the first day of class, she was one of two people who was permitted to choose and Level Three or above potion to turn in; the higher the Level, the more credit. Lily chose a Level Five, the hardest level, with little protest from Malfoy.
"What about the Kafkanious Potion? It's a Level Five so we'll get more points, and I think it'll prepare us more for our end of the year tests so—"
"Honestly, Evans," Malfoy drawled bored, "you choose whatever you want, Mudblood."
Lily glared at him sharply but he hadn't noticed. She bit the inside of her mouth to prevent from saying things that would get her in to trouble. Without a word, she stood and gathered her books.
As she stormed towards the door, she couldn't help but turn, "If you think you are so much smarter than a little Mudblood like me; then why don't you do the project yourself? Huh?"
She turned and walked off with a little skip in her step.
But as the week went by Lily realized she couldn't let him do everything especially because he probably wouldn't do anything. She sent him notes throughout the week but he never responded. So she sat in Slughorn's room all by herself mixing a complicated potion that could turn a human into a beetle. The more you're given, the longer the spell works; but too much and it could be a permanent change that can only be undone with years of charm casting by mediwizards at St. Mungo's.
"Evans," Lily's head snapped up at the sound of surname coming off a voice that once felt warm and kind to her ears.
"Snape," she muttered back going back to her potion.
She pulled out roots of Divine Oranges that she had taken from Slughorn's ingredient drawer. Lily set them up in an orderly line and began to chop—
"You should crush them," Snape interrupted her thoughts.
"Excuse me?" Lily said annoyed.
Snape stepped closer slowly, "Crushing the roots will work better than chopping for Kafkanious Potion. You see crushing it—"
"You know what, I don't really care," Lily leaned closer, "And please never offer your 'help' again to me."
He heaved a heavy sigh, "I just thought…"
"I can read a damned book Snape," Lily blinked furiously.
"Well you took my advice in Potions before, I thought—"
"That was before you became an arse!"
"Lily, please, I didn't—"
"Stop it, Snape! I told you I'm done with you!" Lily shouted gathering her books and ran out the door.
She sprinted around the bend in the corridor and slammed straight to a hard thingy then fell on her butt to the floor.
"Ow," Lily whined as she struggled for her books.
"Honestly, Evans, if you want my attention, there are other ways to get it that don't involve injuring yourself," a James Potter lent a helpful hand.
"Potter," Lily said pushing away his hand and brushing herself off.
"Oh c'mon Evans, I was being nice," James smiled, "there was no flirtation there at all."
"When it comes to you there is always flirtation involved," Lily grunted.
A cocky smile spread across his face, "Well if you'd like to continue this banter, I know this nice place in Hogsmeade—"
Lily pierced her green eyes into him, "Stop. It. Potter."
He shrugged, "Fine then, well if you don't mind, I will be off to work on a glorious project with Snivellus Snape the Potion Master."
Lily let him pass and made her way to the Library to go over other potions she expected to be on the test. Half way there, however, she remembered she had to put her potion away or someone could tamper with it.
James, however, entered the classroom to jab at his favorite nerd Snivelly, "Snivels, Snivels, where fore art though Snivellus?"
Severus didn't make a sound and averted his eyes away from James.
"Oh don't be quiet, Snivellus. What are we to do today? Stir it three times stopping precisely where we started? Add exactly two tablespoons of Gingervine powder? Please Snivelly Sniveller, what are we to do?" James set his stuff down and lay across the table top of a nearby table.
"You can shut your mouth," Severus said annoyed.
"Merlin me, someone is feisty today," James leaned on his elbow and poked Severus in the shoulder.
"Touch me again and I'll curse your finger off," Severus threatened.
James smiled as he stood at his full height with wand in hand, "What will you do, Snape?"
"Do not test me, Potter," Snape rose his wand.
James set his stance as well, "I wouldn't waste my time with a Muggle-hating half bl—"
"Potter," Sev said in deep voice.
"What did you call Lily last year?" James smiled, "A Mudblood?"
"Sectum sem—"
"Flipendo!" James yelled and Severus flew back to the wall.
"Immob—"
"Impedimenta!" James yelled just as Severus stood. He watched as Severus' spell hit the wall far away and ran in slow motion.
"Come on Snivellus, you have to have more than that!" James laughed releasing him.
Bad idea, "SECTUMSEMPRA!"
The spell hit James along his humorous. He flew back with a crash into a shelf of potion books as his arm split open and blood spilt out. His body seized as he gasped in pain. Severus realizing what he had done and thought fervently of how to fix him!
"Episkey," Severus muttered.
The wound sealed but opened back up again.
"Episkey!" he yelled louder.
Still the wound did not stay close. And Severus panicked on the verge of getting sick. James looked at Severus, his eyes wide open but growing weaker as his blood covered his clothes and seeped to the floor around Severus' feet. Severus began to yell for help to scared to leave James alone no matter how much he hated him.
Lily heard the shout on her way down the final stairwell; at the sound of "help", she went running to the potions classroom. She could see the blood from the corridor looking into the room but she didn't stop. When she broke the door way, her head snapped to James' twitching body; Severus' face was just as pale.
Leaning to him, she grabbed his arm and muttered calmly, "Episkey."
"It doesn't work," Severus whispered.
Lily closed her eyes and racked her brain for a more advanced healing spell, "Vulnera sanentur."
The blood stopped spilling and Lily whispered another, "Vulnera sanentur."
The skin began to knit together again and to remove the visibility of the injury, she whispered one more, "Vulnera sanentur."
James closed his eyes but he still breathed heavy ragged gasps. At least, he was still breathing. His blood covered Lily's sleeves, James' uniform, and Severus' shoes. Sweat clung to all three of their foreheads. And Lily began trying spells to get the blood out of James' uniform, her jaw clenched refusing to look at Severus.
Severus bent down beside her though, "What do we do?"
"He should be fine now, but he needs to go to the Hospital Wing," Lily glared.
"Lily," Severus sighed, "if we do that then they'll kick me—"
"You should have thought of that before you attacked James!" Lily yelled standing to look down at him.
"Attack?! I didn't attack him, Lily! He started it! He was throwing spells at me! I only hit him with one! He hit me with more than—"
"I DON'T CARE, SEVERUS!" Lily yelled as he met her face, "you could have killed him!"
His voice deepened and his eyes glared, "I wouldn't have—"
"No, you know what, Sev, GO! Just get out! You're no help to him," she shoved him as hard as she possibly could.
He turned on his heels and walked furiously out, barely remembering James was there. And for a moment, Lily forgot too. It was until her own breathing calmed that she could hear James.
"Sorry, Potter," Lily said kneeling back down by him, "are you okay?"
"I liked it went you called me James," he smiled weakly.
Lily rolled her eyes, "It was a slip, you'll never hear me say it again."
"I'm just glad you know it," he tried to sit up but his body was still too weak from the blood loss.
"Stop," she said laying him back down, "I'll float you to the Hospital Wing."
"Come on, Evans, you do that and Snape gets expelled," James said eyeing her.
"He deserves it. He could've killed you," Lily said angrily.
"Well, it's nice to know you care for my health," James laughed, "but I didn't die and I don't want him to be kicked out."
Lily snorted, "Oh really? You don't seem to mind getting him trouble any other time."
"Well, I have other reasons for him to stay," James sighed.
Lily furrowed her brows, "Would you care to share?"
"If I say it, you'll get mad at me."
"Don't I always," she laughed.
He smiled, he liked that laugh, "Well, I know you still care for him, so—"
"He's nothing to me, Potter," her eyebrows slanted.
"Alright, Evans," James rolled his eyes.
Lily stood, "If you aren't going to let me take you to the hospital wing, what do you expect me to do?"
"Could you grab me a Strengthening Solution?" James pointed to one of the pots.
"How do you know it's done?" Lily quarried.
"It's Sirius'. He's been done awhile now. He went to Hogsmeade and bought it," James laughed.
Lily rolled her eyes but stood to get it, "I'm not surprised."
Grabbing a flask, she scooped the liquid into it. She walked back and bent down to James bringing the potion to his lips. He smiled as he drank it and for the hundredth time that night Lily rolled her eyes. She placed the flask back where she took it and James' loud belch made her jump.
"Bloody hell, Potter," Lily gasped, "You are honestly the most disgusting human being I've ever met."
"Yet you still saved my life," the potion worked and he could stand though he was still sore.
"And I'll regret it every day of my life, believe me," she handed him his books and strutted out the door.
James jogged to catch up to her, "So does this mean I owe you some sexual favor now? Because I won't say no. Unless you want me to. Then I'm quite good at saying no!"
"Please, Potter, do not think I enjoy you're company now," Lily bent down to pick up her books.
James grabbed one for her and bowed as he presented it to her, "My queen."
She snatched it, "Honestly, Potter."
They took the steps in a comfortable silence. People in the corridors who came across the two were surprised by the lack of bitter banter that usually echoed.
When they approached the portrait of the Fat Lady, James smiled at Lily, "So are we friends now?"
Lily stopped dead in her tracks and spun on her heels to face him, "Merlin, Potter, you don't honestly think I'd be willing to be friends with you."
He flinched at her reaction, "I thought we made progress tonight."
"Maybe so," Lily shrugged, "but that doesn't change who you are."
James body filled with frustration as he took offense, "Oh please, Evans, please inform me. Who am I?"
Annoyed that he would assume she'd forget their history, she said, "You're the guy who treats other people like they're nothing. You strut—"
"I do not strut!" he hollered.
"Oh puh-lease, you most definitely strut!" Lily yelled back, "You strut around with your little friends bullying everyone else if they don't bow down to you!"
"I have never done that!"
"Go around and ask people, Potter!"
"LIKE WHO?! WHO HAVE I BULLIED?"
"I don't know? What about every bloody Slytherin?" Lily yelled.
"They always deserve it!" James said defensively.
"Even first years? Seriously," Lily was so disgusted by his ignorance, "face it, you are a bully!"
"NAMES EVANS! GIVE ME NAMES AND I'LL GO APPOLOGIZE RIGHT NOW!"
"LUCIUS MALFOY! SEVERUS SNAPE!" she breathed heavily "ME! AND SO MANY MORE! You make us all feel terrible about ourselves and you don't even care!"
He looked at her surprise, "Well, I'm sorry if you ever felt that way."
"For Merlin's sake," Lily was so frustrated, "Apologies do not fix problems, Potter!"
"Well what's the problem?!"
"YOU ARE!" Lily gave him a slight shove but he didn't move.
"WELL, BLOODY HELL, I TRIED TO APPOLOGIZE!"
"Oh forget it!" Lily stormed to the portrait, "Lemon jelly!"
She swung open and Lily stormed through it. James paced out in the corridor while Lily sprinted up her steps in the Common Room to her dormitory. She threw the door shut behind her and Mary and Marlene's heads snapped to her.
"He is honestly the most annoying, arrogant little toe rag! He is just so ERGH!" She threw herself on to her bed.
"What did Potter do now?" the two sighed.
"I just—he's just such an—oh I can't even explain it without wanting to go punch him!" Lily cried.
"Well lucky you," Mary said, "because a house elf just brought us some tea. So why don't you lay back and tell us everything."
Lily took the tea giving Mary a quick smile. And then she completely ranted to the two of them. Marlene fell asleep half way through it, but not Mary. She awed and oohed and "OH NO!"d at all the right places. When Emmeline and Dori came in, they found Mary and Lily cuddled in Lily's bed with the tea cup knocked over on the floor. They cleaned it up and smirked at the 'little babies' that were their friends.
