Y6: The Girl Who Hummed
She lay crippled in the corner of the room, she was used to the darkness. They rarely came to her now so she slept most days or hummed quietly to herself. Cara's thoughts of freedom had vanished along with most of her memories. If you mentioned any of her friends at this time, she couldn't tell you who they were. Since her capture, she never saw a mirror. Thus she couldn't remember the color of her eyes. Her once slim yet muscular body bared her bony ribs and swollen joints. Her teeth ached constantly and her fingernails were bitten down. Only one month divided her old life to this zombie state she now lived. To her, however, she could have been gone half a year and it would feel the same.
Her eyes were shut as she lay on a rug given to her by the house elf who brings her daily meal. Cara hummed a tune she didn't remember learning. When she remembered a word, she said it aloud. And the only one she never forgot to sing in the tune was "Hogwarts."
"Hogwarts. Hogwarts. Hmmmmhmm. Hogwarts. Teach. Hmmmhmmhmmmhmmm," she said rolling her head on the rug. The song went on and on as she listened to the conversation upstairs.
"He'll be here soon, Artemis," a silky voice sung.
"Set the dining table, the Dark Lord will be comfortable in there I'm sure," the deep voice bellowed.
Heels clicked along the floor as She fixed the room for what they expected to be a meeting. Then He paced throughout trying not to think of what had displeased his master. He knew he was no closer to any information to where the Hallows were but the Dark Lord couldn't honestly expect Him to get it so quickly let alone from a young girl. A knock sounded on the door and they were quick to answer pushing aside their house elf who came to answer it.
"Orion?" the He questioned, "what have you—"
"The Dark Lord called me to be here," the Other cut him off.
He bowed and let the Other in knowing not to ask more. What the Dark Lord asked of the Other was between the Dark Lord and Other. In a flash, the Dark Lord too appeared in front of He. He bowed and let the Dark Lord pass.
"I have a table set for you, my Lord," the She sung.
More footsteps and chairs scratching and they all plopped down in their seats. A long silence held as they waited for the Dark Lord to speak.
"Orion, why are you here?" the Dark Lord asked
"Why, you asked me here my Lord," the Other said surprised.
"Oh yes but you have a duty, that's why you are here," the Dark Lord smiled, "You see, I am going to ask Artemis and Octavia three questions. Your duty will depend on their answers."
The Other nodded.
The Dark Lord turned to the two, "Have you located the cloak?"
The She looked at He before they shook their heads.
"The wand?"
Again they shook their heads.
"Where does your Allegiance lay?"
"With you my Lord," the He said, "we fight only for you."
The Dark Lord stood and all three followed him.
"Orion," the Dark Lord said, "the Cruciatus Curse will do."
"M-my Lord" She whispered.
"We have tried my Lord," He begged, "we are loyal to you."
"Because of your loyalty, you will not be killed. But for your failures, you will endure your torture," the Dark Lord smiled and before vanishing he said, "I will visit your wife tonight, Orion. I have a message for your son."
The Other nodded and the Dark Lord vanished.
"Orion pl—"
"CRUCIO!"
Cara listened as He and She screamed. Cara smiled at it and tried to make a song from their pain. They got what they deserved. And the screaming went on for hours.
Before the Other left, he whispered, "For Merlin's sake, Artemis, when the Dark Lord next comes I hope you have his information."
The next day, they seized Cara from the basement and started up her torture again.
….
The group of prefects sat in an empty classroom circling the Heads of Houses. Each person had a quill and parchment to take notes as the Heads gave instruction and information for the month.
"The first Hogsmeade trip is scheduled for next weekend," Eleanor, Head Girl, said as a few people sighed and others cheered, "Now we know that Locke has a mandatory Quidditch practice set for that day, so don't worry we'll have another one sometime in November."
The ones who sighed cheered up.
"Now," Marty, the Head Boy, pulled parchment out, "I have the schedules for Rounds this month. Any problems, a note in the Heads box outside the Heads dorm is perfect."
"Any questions?" Eleanor smiled.
No one raised their hands and with a flick of her wand the schedules levitated in front of each prefect.
Lily took hers and searched for her name as prefects filed out. The third week: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Partnered with Remus Lupin. Lily and Remus had gotten past their awkwardness that happened on the train and began chatting again. Remus was not in a chipper mood as the last week of September just ended and Pompfrey would not give him the strengthening potion St Mungo's let him take.
"Lily, I'm actually busy that week," Remus started as he stood at Lily's side, "you see—"
"It's no problem, Remus, I think I can handle three days of walking the corridors by myself," Lily smiled.
"Well, I can switch with someone so you don't have to be alone," he offered.
"No, no, please," Lily begged, "there's a chance I'll get stuck with Severus or Andrew."
"Andrew Calder?" Remus wondered, "What's wrong with him?"
"He asked me to Hogsmeade this morning because he knew it'd be next week. And I told him I already had a boyfriend," Lily blushed.
"Who?!"
"Well," Lily's face was beat red, "I said it was you but only because you and Potter walked past me and I obviously wasn't going to say Potter, so I kinda said you! But don't freak out! I honestly do not like you like that. I mean I like you obviously. But I mean I don't you know fancy you. Not that I don't think you're not fanciable. You're very fanciable. Is that even a word? Anyway I just didn't know what to say and I'm sorry if I made this all awkward! I just didn't know how to turn him down! He literally came out of nowhere! I mean I didn't know he even fancied me!"
Remus laughed, "Lily, I didn't catch a word you said with that rambling! But I'm glad you find me attractive enough to be your boyfriend."
"I really am sorry," Lily apologized as they walked to the Gryffindor Tower.
"Don't worry about it, I'll just have a lot of explaining to do to the boys," Remus laughed again.
"Shakespeare Sugar," Lily said to the Fat Lady.
They walked through the Common Room and Lily left him for bed. He took his staircase that led to his dorm with Peter, Sirius, and James.
When he pulled open the door, a shoe came flying at him hitting him in the shoulder.
"OW!" Remus yelled.
James threw another shoe, "Selena Fenton? Selena bloody Fenton!"
Remus looked at him confused catching the shoe, "Who the hell is Selena Fenton?!"
"Ravenclaw, third year," Peter piped up.
"Fenton had to tell me my best friend was dating Evans!" he grabbed Sirius' shoe and tossed it.
Remus took the shoe to his cheek but threw it right back at him, "It was an excuse you idiot!"
"Oh c'mon Remus!" James hollered, "I KNOW YOU LIKE HER!"
"I DO LIKE HER, YOU IDIOT! BUT I IN NO WAY FANCY HER!" Remus' face was turning purple with yelling.
"Then why did SELENA FENTON tell me you two were DATING?"
"FOR MERLIN'S SAKE, JAMES, SOMEONE ASKED HER TO BLOODY HOGSMEADE AND SHE COULDN'T BLOODY THINK OF A BLOODY EXCUSE! SO SHE USED ME!" Remus breathed heavily.
"Wait a minute," James said calmly, "who asked her to Hogsmeade?"
Remus rolled his eyes.
"No seriously, Mooney," James said taking a seat by Sirius and Peter on the floor. The two had watched the argument with amused expressions knowing Remus wouldn't do that to James.
Remus getting fired up, "BLOODY HELL! IT WAS ANDREW CAL—"
An owl tapped on the window of the boys' dormitory. Peter stood to unlock the door. He took the letter and handed it to Sirius.
Sirius opened it as Remus and James continued their… conversation?
Dear Sirius,
Your father and I need to speak with you and Regulus as soon as we can. Send me the date of your first Hogsmeade trip and I will set up a lunch for all of us to speak.
Your mother.
Sirius blinked at the letter wondering what his parents needed him for. He thought of all the other meetings the family had and he rolled his eyes. It would be another Death Eater meeting.
"What is it, Pads?" Peter asked.
"My mother," he sighed, "she needs to speak with me and Reg."
"When?" James said.
"The first Hogsmeade trip," he tossed the letter to James and looked at Remus, "do you know when that is, Mooney?"
"Actually, it's next weekend."
Sirius groaned so loudly the bed he leaned on shook.
"C'mon, Si, maybe she just wants to have some tea and lemon squares," James joked.
Sirius glared, "And maybe the Death Eaters are just a bunch of guys who play cricket on Thursdays."
He flipped over on his bed and zipped his covering up. He pulled his blanket up over his head annoyed with what next weekend would entail.
Why were they so urgent to talk to him now? They never gave a shit about him before…
"Wait who did you say asked her?" James said to Remus.
"Your obsession is grossing me out," Peter muttered.
"Stuff it, twat," James said to Peter then turned back to Remus with begging eyes, "Oh c'mon. Pleeease tell me."
"It was Calder," Remus said with a flick of his hand, "she doesn't fancy him anyway."
"I'll kill him," James muttered darkly.
Peter tossed a pillow at James before going to his bed to lay down. James threw it back but missed to focus on his plans to destroy Calder.
"No, James, we are not bubbling off his skin and feeding it to sea gulls," Remus said as he picked up a book knowing exactly what James was thinking.
James shrugged and lay back on the floor where he would eventually fall asleep because he was too lazy to move to his bed.
