Y6: Come Fly With Me
The girls left Lily and Mary to go with the three Ravenclaw boys. Amos had taken an interest in Emmy after Lily seemed impossible to talk with; and that other boy whose name was Randall decided to chat up Dori. So Lily and Mary walked around the shops and found themselves wandering in to Dominic's Maestro, a music shop with long aisles full of every genre of music. They spread out amongst the store. Mary went straight to the Magic-Pop Rock section. And Lily started from the front of the shop to the back. She came across the band Earth, Wind & Magic; and pulled out their record.
Side One:
Keep Your Wand to the Sky
That's the Way of the Wand
In the Resurrection Stone
Apparate Away
Side Two:
After the Magic Has Gone
Boggarts Wonderland
Earth, Wind & Magic were huge in the wizarding world; so much so that their knock of Muggle group, Earth, Wind, &Fire, is even doing well in the Muggle world. Lily smiled, Petunia used to listen to them before she became insufferable. Insufferable, what a rude word to call her sister. But that is what she's become hasn't she, insufferable?
Her hand moved along the album cover as she thought of her sister. She frowned at how terrible she was feeling that guilty ache in her stomach again. She set the album down not wanting to cry in the store. She moved a long way towards the back into the Muggles section. That section was less organized, the albums were haphazardly thrown in boxes with no labels of names or years. Lily pulled over the most cluttered box and sat on the floor as she went through the records.
She smiled as she pulled out Frank Sinatra's 1958 album "Come Fly with Me". Her mother used to sing this around the house. Well, sing was not exactly the right verb. Yell? Screech? Yes, screech is close enough. Lily laughed, her mother was so incredibly tone deaf but she still screeched anyway. And Lily and Petunia would join in. Their father would sometimes laugh, sometimes roll his eyes, sometimes join in; once he walked right out of the house and waited until they were done.
Lily loved the way her family had been then. Happy, together, o—
"Evans?" James Potter looked down at the girl who sat on the floor clutching a dusty Muggle album to her chest, "can I ask what you're doing down there?"
Lily blushed as she jumped up, "Oh nothing. Just erm- going through albums."
"On the floor?"
"Well, you see, they're all in boxes and less organized so I—wait why am I explaining myself? I mean clearly I'm looking at music. What are you doing here, Potter?"
"My plan was to look for some party music but I got distracted by a little redhead sitting on the floor clutching a," he lifted her album out of her hands, "Frank Sinatra album."
She snatched it back, "So you thought you'd come over and bother me?"
He ignored her question and asked one of his own, "Who's Frank Sinatra? A muggle singer?"
"Well, Potter, I am in the Muggle section," Lily patronized.
James rolled his eyes, "Okay, okay. Well are you going to play it?"
He pointed over to a record player by the checkout counter.
Lily looked surprised, "No, why would I?"
"Because I want to hear if he's any good," James laughed.
"Can't you just take my word for it?"
James smiled as he took the album out of her hands, she jogged after him but he held it over his head. He quickly set it on to play pulling out his wand and tapped the record player.
Lily glared at him as they waited for it to play. He is so annoying!
He smirked at how childish Lily was being. She's absolutely beautiful when she's angry.
"Come fly with me, let's fly, let's fly away.
If you can use some exotic booze,
There's a bar in far Bombay."
"Nice voice," James said.
Lily nodded.
"Come fly with me, let's float down to Peru
In llama land there's a one-man band
And he'll toot his flute for you
Come on fly with me, let's take off in the blue"
Without thinking, James took Lily's hand and began dancing gracefully with her.
"Potter," Lily growled but she didn't stop him.
He smiled and continued dancing through the song.
After a while, Lily couldn't help but laugh. And James beamed at that sound. He twirled her and she laughed that harmonious sound. He held her close and swayed her. 1, 2, 3. Even her green eyes smiled at him and he fell even more in love with this girl.
"James!" Remus cried from the doorway.
Lily broke away in shock and blushed horribly. James wondered why she was so embarrassed but turned to Remus with anger.
"What?" he glared.
Remus ignored the anger, "We have to get back to school. It's- it's Cara."
Lily looked up the blood draining from her face, "Did they find her?"
"I'm not sure," Remus sighed, "that's all I could get out of Hagrid before he ordered everyone back to school."
"Does Pete know?" James asked rushing into the street with Remus, Lily jogging behind.
"Yes, he was looking for you," Remus sent up red sparks a sign that Peter would know meant that he found James.
"And Pads?" James said heading for the whispering group of Hogwarts students moving back towards school.
Remus stopped him, "He's not back yet."
James sighed but Lily asked, "Where is he?"
"Wait I have to get Mary!" Lily said and ran back in the store. James ruffled his hair frustrated but ran after her.
"Mary! Mary!" Lily yelled in the store.
The small girl came running over, "What is it?"
"Cara!" Lily grabbed Mary by the arm and followed James back out.
"Did they find her?! Is she okay?!" Mary cried.
They didn't answer and began to push their way through the crowd. A hand clasped around Lily's wrist and Lily heard her name being called. It was Dorcas and the other girls.
"Lily, do you know what's going on?" Dorcas asked worried.
Lily whispered so lowly that only the girls could hear her, "I don't know but it has something to do with Cara."
The girls gasped loudly and Lily could sense the eyes on her back. She turned to find everyone looking at them except for the Remus and James. Where had they gone?
"C'mon," Emmeline said taking Marlene and Dorcas' hands and pushing through the crowd.
Mary and Lily held on to each other as they followed the other three. When they broke the crowd, they could see a distant James Potter and Remus Lupin running out towards the school with a little Peter Pettigrew struggling to keep up.
"I'm scared Lily," Mary whispered.
Lily looked at her, "I am too."
"What if—what if she's not alive?" Mary choked out and started to cry, "That's terrible, I know, but why- why else would they do this? What happened, you know?"
Lily petted Mary's head fighting back her tears, "Everything will be okay, Mar."
Mary whispered so low, "Not if she's dead. I can't do this if she's dead."
Lily bit her lip still petting the girl but inwardly agreeing. They had made in this far on the hope that Cara was still alive somewhere. But if she was—if she was dead, how could they ever be able to move on? Cara was their best friend. All the sassiness, all the raunchy humor, that was Cara; and she was theirs.
"Where's Black?" Marlene muttered to Lily.
Lily shrugged and all the girls set off at a sprint. When they reached Hogwarts, they stormed in to the Great Hall. Teachers sat at the high table and Remus paced and Peter shook with fright as James argued with one of the professors. Lily broke past the girls and came up beside James.
"Where is he then?" James was yelling.
"Please, Mr. Potter, I understand you're emotional but the Headmaster is quite busy dealing with a situation!" Professor Dubois of Astronomy responded.
"And I understand he is busy, Professor! But I need to know the situation surrounding Cara Connors!" James fired frustratingly ruffling his hair.
"I'm afraid I am of no help," Dubois apologized.
"Clearly," James muttered under his breath as he began to mimic Remus in pacing.
Lily grabbed his hand and brought him down the table to where Professor Slughorn sat worriedly.
"Professor," Lily said sweetly as James looked from her to her hand clasped tightly around his in confusion, "Mr. Potter and I were wondering if there was any way to speak with Professor Dumbledore."
Slughorn sighed, "I'm afraid not right now, Miss Evans. I do apologize."
Lily nodded showing disappointment but asked, "Could you tell me where Professor McGonagall is?"
"She's erm—"Slughorn looked around nervously but the teachers were unsure of what to say, "She's at St Mungo's."
Lily nodded releasing James' hand to whisper so softly that none of the other teachers could hear, "Please Professor, can you at least tell me if it has to do with Miss Connors?"
Professor Slughorn gulped and hesitated but when he looked into Lily's green eyes, he found that he couldn't lie. So he nodded.
Lily's heart dropped lower, either she was alive or dead; they would take her to the hospital no matter which. "Thank you, Professor," Lily said respectfully.
She grabbed James by the arm and ran out of the Hall pretending she couldn't hear Dubois' protests. Lily dragged him to the owlery ignoring his questions as they ran. When they got there, she released him.
"I need you to get your owl!" Lily panted as she took parchment and a quill from the supply table.
"Finnick!" James called as a brown owl with white speckle and gold eyes swooped to his arms.
Dear Professor Dumbledore,
If you are with Miss Cara Connors, can you please respond?
We Gryffindors are begging to see her.
I understand she may be very, very unwell, but please Professor
We need to know what is going on.
-Lily Evans
Lily strapped the note on to James' owl and off it flew away. Lily began to tear up as she thought of her dear friend. James felt no better, but as he watched Lily struggle with containing herself, he had to reach out to her. He took hold of her arm and walked her slowly out of the owlery and up to Gryffindor tower. She didn't cry but remained very silent. As they walked in to the Common Room, they sat side by side on one of the couches. They didn't speak and the silence was all but comfortable. It was like they could hear the other one yelling inside themselves, but could not console each other.
Twenty long minutes later, Finnick tapped on the Common Room window. They both stood and James ran to open the door.
Miss Evans,
Please gather all the sixth year Gryffindors and meet in my office.
The Password is Tigerlily.
B. W. Dumbledore
When they both gathered the sixth years besides the still missing Sirius, they went off to Dumbledore's office.
"Tigerlily," Lily yelled as the staircase slowly revealed itself.
They knocked on his door and it flew open. Dumbledore was yet to be there so they all paced, stood, or sat anxiously. Dumbledore's phoenix sang in its cage but no one listened. What could've passed for an hour, but was less than ten minutes, struck as Dumbledore appeared in his office with a broom in tow.
"Professor," James and Lily breathed.
"Sit, sit," he ushered as he brought many chairs for the eight Gryffindors, "Where is Mr. Black, may I ask?"
"He went for tea with his mother," James lied casually.
Dumbledore nodded clearly not believing it.
"First of all, I would like to clarify that Miss Connors is stable," Dumbledore emphasized stable, "She is, however, very, very confused."
Everyone clung to his words as he continued, "I'm afraid that there is a high chance she will not remember any of you. She suffered a great deal of head trauma and does not even remember her own name let alone faces of family and friends. Secondly, I must emphasize that Miss Connors may see the things around her but cannot process anything. In other words, her level of speech has diminished greatly."
"But can we see her?" Lily interrupted.
Dumbledore smiled, "You bring me to my third, Miss Evans. Thirdly, I will say that you may see her from the window outside her room but you cannot enter the room."
"That's good enough," James said standing, "please, Professor, can we go now?"
Dumbledore stood, "I have no proper transportation for you, so we must fly to Hogsmeade and then I can only apparate two people at a time."
They nodded and Dumbledore somehow produced six brooms. James, Remus, Peter, Marlene, and of course Dumbledore had their own brooms. Dori and Emmeline shared. And Lily and Mary shared.
Mary flew and Lily clung to her.
"She'll be fine," Mary nodded as she flew out the window.
Lily didn't answer so Mary went on.
"I mean she's not dead," she said, "that's what Dumbledore said. She is still alive. And I know she can get better. It's Cara, it'll just be another of her crazy stories, right?"
Still Lily could not find her voice.
"I can't wait to hear her voice, you know," Mary tried to hold in the sobs, "I never realized how much I loved her. It's sad to think like that. I mean I had to way until she was kidnapped before I realized that she is my sister. You all are. Especially you Lily. I love you, you know that? You are one of the best people to ever come into my life. And I swear in the name of Merlin's bloody red scarf, I will kill you if you ever walk out of it."
Lily gave a slight laugh and whispered, "I love you too, then."
When they landed on the ground in Hogsmeade, Dumbledore offered his hand to Lily and James first.
The apparition feeling was not as severe as the pain when they looked in through the window. Lily heaved a sob and James shook as they watched a sickly, gray toned girl lay in a bed with tubes hooked in to her skin as her bones poked sharply out. Her hair was matted to her forehead and a dazed look crossed her face, but her lips moved. Cara's parents cried in a corner as they watched their weak daughter.
Two by two, all eight students arrived. Dumbledore frowned as he watched his students fall apart. Professor McGonagall came up behind them and wiped at her eyes as they all stared through.
The father led the mother out crying loudly as they passed. Dumbledore took a step in to the room with McGonagall trailing behind leaving the Gryffindors outside.
"Where is Mr. Black?" McGonagall's voice shook.
"He has yet returned to school," Dumbledore sighed closing the door preventing the sixth years from coming in.
"But he- he- he needs to be here," she whispered, "that's all she's been asking for."
Dumbledore nodded and they walked closer to Cara.
"Sirius," she smiled as her head rolled about on the pillow.
Dumbledore put his hand on her head and Cara looked up to him.
"Sirius," she said to him, "Siri-us."
Dumbledore nodded, "Sirius."
She beamed at him and began humming the Hogwarts song again.
