Secrets
Chapter 4: Confrontation
It had been almost a month since that day.
The day I lost my girl, my two good friends came out of the closet and I met Axel.
I hadn't heard from Axel since that day. Hell, I hadn't really heard from anyone since that day. I've just been living my life like normal: sleeping, playing video games and working. What else is there to do when you're single?
(Knock knock)
I glanced over at my front door and got up. Nobody usually comes over to my place, especially in the middle of the day. I opened the door and was immediately tackled by Kairi. She held onto me tight, her body trembling.
"Kairi? What's wrong? Are you ok?" She just kept holding onto me. I could feel her tears seeping through my shirt. "Kairi?" I pulled away from her and shut the door. "What the hell is going on?"
"I didn't know who else to come to." I watched her as she wiped away her tears, slowly walking over to my couch and taking a seat. "It's about me and Sora." I took in a deep breath and sat down beside her. "I'm sure you know what happened, right? With him and Riku?"
"You mean about them wanting to be together?" She nodded and wiped away more tears. "Yeah, but Sora told me he talked to you about it like a year ago."
"He did... but I thought it was just a phase or something. I didn't think we'd really break up, y'know? I was willing to let him figure things out. I didn't mind to wait." She fell back against the couch and sighed. "I've loved him ever since we were kids."
"I know, Kairi. Hell, everyone knows how much you love him." I leaned in toward her and brushed a few strands of hair behind her ear. "But these things happen, y'know? He loves Riku. He loves him a lot. I'm not sure how I feel about it, but he's my best friend and I'm not going to reject him for who he is." I smiled and wiped her tears away. "You're a beautiful girl, Kairi. Sora is just one chapter of your story. You need to move on and wish the best for him and Riku."
"Wow, Roxas. I didn't know you could be so thoughtful..." She reached over and pulled me in for a hug. "Thank you."
"Don't thank me, thank Netflix. I've watched so many romance movies on there... It's kind of sad." She laughed and stood up, smoothing down her dress.
"You know, you should really talk to Sora. Ever since he came out to you, you've been out of reach. He's worried about you." I looked up at her and frowned.
"Just let him know everything's ok. I don't think of him any different. I'm just trying to get back on my feet." She nodded and looked around the apartment.
"I'm glad to see that your apartment isn't a wreck! We all thought you'd have pizza boxes, soda cans and trash all over the place. Hell, I thought I'd find you cuddled up in bed, all depressed and stuff!" She laughed, her hands on her hips.
"We?" My eyebrows furrowed in confusion as I stood up and walked over to the window. "Are you kidding me?" Riku's car was parked across the street. "Did Sora put you up to this, Kairi?" She tried to hold back a giggle as my door opened and Sora walked in.
"It was the only thing I could think of, Roxas! Don't be mad!" I shook my head and walked over to him, pulling him in for a hug. "I haven't heard from you in weeks! I was worried..." Kairi ran over and joined in on the hug before leaving the room. I took a step back from him and smiled.
"Sorry I haven't kept in touch, Sora. I've really just been trying to focus on work and getting back on my feet."
"It's no problem... I just... I thought that since I told you about me and Riku..."
"No way, Sora! Don't ever think I'd stop being your friend. You're like my other half, y'know?" He smiled and leaned against the wall beside my door.
"You need to get out more, though! If you've really only been working these past few weeks, then I'm going to make you go out with us!" I rolled my eyes and sat down on the arm of my couch.
"When?" He pushed off of the wall and took a step toward me.
"Tonight! What about that club we used to go to in college?"
"Hollow Bastion? Really?"
"Yeah, that's the one!" He looked at the time on his phone. "How about we meet up around 8 o'clock? It'll just be me, you, Riku and Kairi. Sound good?"
"Yeah, yeah... whatever. I'll see you down there." Sora stuck his tongue out at me and left.
Great. After almost a month of isolation, I now have to go to a God damn club. Why did I agree to this?
Riku, Sora and Kairi decided to come pick me up. I guess they didn't want me taking a cab to that part of Traverse Town. I guess I couldn't blame them... downtown wasn't the safest place to be. Especially since a member of Organization XIII was after me.
We all made our way into the club. I scanned the dark, foggy room and noticed a few familiar faces in the back corner.
"Fuck me." I nodded at the one person I knew all too well: Xemnas. He nodded back and began talking to a member of his gang. Riku looked at me, then to where I was looking. He frowned.
"I should have known they'd be here. Wait here, guys... I'll set 'em straight." Sora tried to stop his lover from going, but to no avail. He took Kairi's hand and walked over to the bar. I followed them and took a seat. Sora and Kairi tried to ignore the situation, but I couldn't help but watch. Riku was speaking with Xemnas, their leader.
Thankfully, I didn't see Marluxia anywhere.
I didn't see Axel, either.
"Hey, Roxas..." My heart skipped a beat as I heard the sweet, familiar voice of my ex-girlfriend. She took a seat beside of me and smiled. "It's been a while."
"Naminé? What're you doing here?" She ordered a drink and shrugged.
"Mar invited me to come and meet his friends. He's never introduced me to them before, so I thought it'd be nice to finally meet them." She turned to me and grabbed my hand. "Look, I just want to apologize for how things ended. I didn't mean for it to go like that..."
"It's alright. I guess it had been over for a while, anyway." She nodded and kissed my hand in hers.
"I hope you find someone special. Marluxia might seem like an ass, but he's a great guy when he sobers up." I scoffed and turned away from her, dropping my drink to the floor as someone grabbed me from behind and threw me down.
"Hey, you little shit! Didn't I tell you to stay away from my girl?" I didn't even need to look to know who it was. Marluxia pulled me back up, his hands gripping onto the collar of my shirt. Sora stood in front of Kairi, trying to protect her. He glanced over at Riku, but the commotion couldn't be heard from over the loud music.
"It's not my fault that you can't keep an eye on her. She came to me." I gritted my teeth as he threw me into a wall, my back hitting hard against it. I took a step forward, but was knocked back by a punch to the face.
"Eleven!" Marluxia cringed at the sound of his leader's voice. He turned to face him and avoided his gaze. "Do you not know the rules of the Organization?" I looked up into his golden eyes and frowned. "A member of Organization XIII never harms another member. Whether that member is still active, or not."
"What?" Marluxia looked back at me, then back to his superior. "What are you talking about, Xemnas? This little fuck isn't a member of Organization XIII." I gently touched my face, then looked at my hand. I was bleeding.
"Roxas was, at one time, a member of this Organization." Xemnas took a step toward Marluxia and grabbed his arm, pushing him back to where the rest of the group was. "I've taught you better than this, Marluxia. Keep your hands off him. I mean it."
I stared into those golden eyes one last time before he turned to walk away. He may have saved me, but he let my secret out. I never wanted anyone to know about that part of my past. Ever.
"Roxas, are you ok?" Sora, Riku and Kairi ran over to me, their eyes filled with worry.
"I'm fine. Don't worry about it."
"You were a member of the Organization? Why didn't you tell me?" Sora furrowed his brows in confusion as Riku helped me to the bar. "Roxas?"
"I don't want to talk about it, Sora. Please."
"I'm going to go get the car..." Riku left. Sora and Kairi began to ask questions. I was starting to get tired of hearing their voices. But then, I heard one voice that, for some reason, I don't think I could ever get tired of.
"Roxas?" I turned to look at the red-head. He had a tall, thin, blonde woman beside him, her arm wound tightly around his waist. She had the same cloak on as the rest of them. She must have been Larxene, the girl from Sora's picture.
"Hey, Axel." He whispered something to the women and she left. He leaned down until he was level with my face and frowned.
"What the hell happened to you?" I began to explain, but Xemnas' voice erupted throughout the club. He was calling for Axel. "I'll be right back."
A few more minutes passed as Sora and Kairi kept talking. I didn't even feel like answering anything or talking about anything. Sora got a text from Riku saying that he was out front, and we started to make our way outside.
"Roxas? Hey, Rox, wait up!" Axel pushed his way through the crowd and grabbed my arm. "Xemnas told me what happened. I wouldn't feel right if I just let you go. I live really close by if you want to get cleaned up and maybe grab a bite to eat?"
"Why should we trust any of you? Look what your friend did to him!" Kairi looked up at him and frowned, her arms crossed.
"First of all, Marluxia isn't my friend. I hate that bastard. And second, I'm not like the rest of them." He took a step toward me and smiled. "It's up to you, kid."
"I think you should go with him, Roxas." Sora nodded to Axel and grabbed Kairi's hand. "It'll take us twenty minutes to get back home and you should really get cleaned up." I nodded and followed the tall red-head as we all left the club. "Call me in the morning, Roxas. I mean it!" Sora and Kairi got in Riku's car and drove off.
"Thanks Axel, I appreciate it."
"No problem. I only live like two blocks away. Think you can make it?" I scoffed and caught up to him.
"I didn't get hit by a car, y'know. I can walk just fine." He laughed as we made our way to his apartment.
Once again, he was there to save the day.
It had been so long since I had last seen him. I had forgotten how much I liked the guy.
