Chapter 21

Pepperpaw POV

I walk quickly back to camp. The sun is trying to make its way up. I can see hints of pink light through the darkness. How dare they keep the meeting going that long! Don't they realize that some of us don't have the luxury of just waltzing back into camp with the leader like its just fine?

Last time I was caught out of camp, I was grounded to Elder duties for three days! It would have been longer but Jayfeather explained that I had been hunting and he had seen me out in the moors and called for my help with Dovewing's kitting.

I stop dead when I see a patrol of cats racing my way. What do I do? I see a dip in the ground leading to a small rabbit hole, it's my only hope! I sniff around the edges, there's only a gain scent of rabbits. No foxes or anything else. I take a deep breath before quickly jumping into the hole.

It must be the dawn patrol.

Oh no. They're going to find my scent, and then ill be back on elder duties. Ill never become a warrior.

I look around. This isn't just a hole. This is a tunnel. It leads in two directions. Do I dare follow it? If I'm thinking correctly the tunnel to my right leads in the general direction of camp. Maybe there's another hole down that way.

I listen closely hearing the paw steps now. I take one last look at the hole above my head a take of quickly down the tunnel.

...

Alright I'll admit it. I'm lost. It's so silent down here. It's slowly began to scar me. After a while the tunnel had changed directions, and like a mousebrain, I followed it. I can't go back, I tried, I've lost my own scent down here, and I can't just retrace my steps, for one I can't see, and two I took a few turns info hear tunnels and I can't remember which ones.

All of a sudden I hear a voice. The same voice that talked to me about Hollykit.

"Follow me." It meows and I feel soft fur brush my side as the cat walks past me

"Who are you?" I ask, but there's no reply

I can still se nothing, but the cat's tail rests on my nose as, she or he, beckons me to follow them again. I've never heard the voice above a whisper so I can't tell if its a she cat or a Tom.

The going is slow and they don't speak again. It gives be time to think about the prophecy. Who is the Tiger? They say Tigerstar was destroyed. Part of me wonders if it had something to do with Tigerpaw. But what?

My train of though it broken as the cat stops and I run face first into a wall.

I hear laughter then they speak.

"Turn you paws into the tunnel to your right and it will lead you up onto the moor." The voice fades as they speak and it seems as if they are walking down the other tunnel.

"Thank you!" I call after the figure

I find the tunnel and race up it. The tunnel begins too look lighter but never bright. As I step out of the hole, I see that the sky has clouded over and that it's nearly sunhigh.

I'm done for.

...

I caught a rabbit as my sorry excuse for being out of camp. Ive decide to enter through the actual entrance to camp and just except my punishment.

I sigh and step into camp. As I do I am met wish questions and towels of surprise.

Heathertail runs up to me.

"Where have been?" She yells

"I woke up early and so, I decided to go hunting." I answer

She stares at me for a long while before shaking her head.

"Put that on the Fresh-kill pile. We have battle training with Ravenpaw and Weaselfur."

I do as she says and we take off towards the training clearing. She sets a swift pace and I match it easily.

After our first run together I quickly told her that I had just wanted to impress her and pretended to be very winded. She accepted that I was just fast and hasn't asked since, but I know that she is suspicious of me. Every chance she gets she is testing me, wanting to prove her right. That's not going to happen. So even now I stay a bit behind her as we run.

When we arrive at the clearing I see that a clearing is all that it really is. A clearing with a few scraggly bushes around it.

I see Ravenpaw traing already with his mentor Weaslefur. Weaslefur is a ginger Tom with white paws. It's more pale ginger than Lionblaze but darker than Sandstorm. Ravenpaw isn't bad, he's actually pretty good. He jumps up just as Weaslefur rushes at him, landing on his shoulders, and attempts to hold on without claws. It doesn't work but it might have had he used claws. He is flung off and this time he rushes at Weaslefur. Just as Weaslefur jumps out of the way Ravenpaw veers quickly to the same side and cuffs him over the ears. He hesitates and Weaslefur pins him down, winning the match.

Heathertail turns to me "In WindClan our greatest asset is speed. Both in thinking and in acting."

I nod as Ravenpaw and Weaslefur walk over to us.

"Onestar wants us to try a new tactic. Having the older apprentices teach the younger ones a few times."

"I can agree with that." Heathertail meows

Ravenpaw walks up to me. "So first of all lets see what you know. Fight me, remember no claws and no teeth."

I nod and he goes to stand in front of me across the clearing. We circle each other slowly. He make the first move. He runs toward me my first instinct is to flinch to the side, so I do. He predicted it and is ready he veers to the side that I did and jumps on me, pinning me and winning the match.

"Try to predict what your opponent is going to do, but don't think to long." He meows after letting me up

"Try again."

He trots back over to the other side of the clearing and stares at me.

We circle again, though it seems like a strange thing to do, then once again he runs toward me. I think of what he did last time, so this time I jump above him as he nears me. I land on his back, but I don't stay. I whack the top of his head and jump off, retreating a few steps to watch his reaction.

He turns to face me and shakes his head as if clearing away dust.

I decide to move first this time. I decide to simply run at him then swerve to the side at the last moment and go from there. I take off toward him and just before I get within clawing distance, I swerve to the right and whirl around to face him.

He had jumped up to stop me but quickly realized what I had done and flips around in the air, landing facing me. Just as I'm thinking of what to do next he take one step forward and jumps on me, winning the match.

He gets off "Great job for a first try, with some training you'll be as good as any warrior."

The mentors walk over and give their advice on the match. As we head back to camp I decide something. I will be the best warrior in WindClan.

Wait, I mean ThunderClan. Don't I?
