Chapter 27-

Swirlpaw POV

I sit in a small clearing in that strange dream place. I can't wake up. Not yet.

"They want me to return to ThunderClan."

"It is your birth clan." A voice reasons. I look around and finally see a cat in the shadows.

"No. I don't have a clan. I'm a rogue apparently."

"They raised you. They could have just left you out there." The cat replies. Her voice seems very familiar but I can't see her.

"But I'm allowed to make my own choices aren't I?"

"What about your sisters?"

"They probably aren't my real sisters. I mean, just look at our pelts. Not one of us is even similar."

"You were raised as sisters. Until a while ago, you were ready and willing to believe that you were sisters and that Daisy was your mother and Spiderleg your father. Where is your loyalty?"

"My loyalty is there. It's just to the clan that I choose. What about Tawnypelt? She switched clans."

"Her father influenced her."

"My leader influenced me."

"Why won't you listen to me? Part of you wants to go back. I know it. You are at a crossroads. Your decision will impact every cat around you! You need to stop this war with yourself."

"How would you know about any trouble I'm having within myself?"

The cat steps out of the shadows and I see her clearly. Her pelt is ginger with swirled tabby markings. "I am you."

"How?" I ask, stepping back a few paces

"This is a dream remember? Make a decision."

"But I only have a few sunrises!"

Suddenly she starts talking strangely. "Swirlpaw will you just stop?"

The world goes black and I open my eyes. Blackpaw is nudging me.

"Honestly what does it take to get some sleep around here. Stop mumbling."

She turns around and lays back in her nest. It's not even dawn yet.

...

"Wake up apprentices. Time for a hunting patrol. All of you are needed." Tawnypelt meows from the entrance of our den

I sit up and stretch. Stupid dreams.

I turn to find Berrypaw only to see that she isn't in her nest. "Where is Berrypaw?" I ask aloud

"She was called into the medicine den at dawn." Stormpaw meows, yawning "Two of the warriors came down with that weird sickness. That's why all three of us are going on patrol."

He stands and shakes his gray fur, spreading moss bits around the den.

"Is this never going to end?" Blackpaw asks "They can't heal the sickness as far as I know and cats are just going to die."

"Who knows," Stormpaw replies "maybe this is some kind of warning. From StarClan I mean."

"Apprentices," Tawnypelt pads into the den "I can't wait all day. Snow fell yesterday and the clan is starving so if you would kindly hurry I would appreciate it."

She pads back out and we hurry after her.

"You can eat after you've caught enough. All that is left from yesterday is going to the queens and elders." Tawnypelt meows not even turning around to look at us

As we head out into the snowy forest, my thoughts are swirling around in my head. ShadowClan needs me. I can't just abandon them!

I stop as a small scuffling noise catches my ears. Squirrel.

I look around and finally see a bushy tail bouncing around near the base of a tree a few fox-lengths away. I slowly pad toward it, keeping a bush between me and the squirrel. I am a giant billboard with this ginger fur.

What in StarClan is a billboard?

I shake my head. Food is a priority, billboards are not. Whatever they may be.

Wait. I am so mousebrained! Why hide from the squirrel? I can turn invisible! I just need to figure out how.

I stop and concentrating on getting food for my clan. This is the way I can help. I've always been light on my feet and if I'm invisible I can catch more prey. Come on. Come on.

I open my eyes, just realizing I had squeezed them shut. My paws are gone. My pelt is gone. I am invisible.

I pad out from behind the bush, moving very slowly trying to concentrating on silence and my power at the same time. When I reach a stop where I will be able to pounce I stop. The squirrel is digging in the snow looking for food. As I pounce, I become visible again. I catch the squirrel easily and sit looking at my luck. The squirrel will feed two cats. This is a good catch but I will need much more.

...

By the time I meet up with the other apprentices I have the large squirrel, a smaller one, and a small mouse. Not too bad if I do say so myself.

Blackpaw has a large squirrel, larger than mine, but that is all.

Stormpaw has two mice and a little bird that I cannot name.

Whatever the other clans may think we don't always have a diet of frogs and rats. Squirrels are just as abundant here as in ThunderClan territory and there are mice everywhere. Even near RiverClan.

When Tawnypelt arrives she carries a fat mouse and two small lizards. Looks like we have had a great success in our patrol.

She doesn't set her catch down but quickens her pace, there is something in her eyes that is different. We follow her and by the time we reach the camp I can hear it.

Silence. Kits aren't playing, elders aren't chatting, no cat is talking.

When we pad into camp everycat is gathered in the center of camp. We set our prey down by the entrance and rush over.

Kinkfur Is gone. She had been hiding the fact that she was sick for a few days. Passing it off as a cold because of the rain and snow. There was nothing Littlecloud could do. The other warrior that went into the medicine den today is Snowbird. She noticed that she was sick and came in right away.

Berrypaw feels awful. She knows that she couldn't have done anything for Kinkfur but wishes she could have.

I know now what I must do. If I can stop this needless death by returning to ThunderClan and fulfilling a prophecy then I'll do it. But make no mistake. When this is all over. I will return to ShadowClan. It is where I belong.

Please review. I want to know what you think and reviews motivate me to write faster. I promise that this book will be finished by January 10.
