Emily is so engrossed in the chart she is reading at the nurse's station that she doesn't even realize Micah is standing right beside her until he leans in close, sliding another file across the one that is already open in front of her.
"Gastroduodenostomy" he murmurs into her ear causing Emily to jump.
When she turns to look at him, Micah is still standing close, a pleased expression on his face as he waits for her reaction.
"Why Dr. Barnes" she says coyly, attempting flirtation to cover her embarrassment at being startled. "I thought we agreed to leave the dirty talk at home."
A shadow of confusion crosses Micah's face. Emily's eyes follow his glance to the paperwork in front of her, and she suddenly realizes he is talking about a case he has just given her. Blushing, she looks back at Micah and sees he is grinning broadly.
"I got you put on the case so you can scrub in with me," he explains with a nod to the folder in front of her.
"Really?!" exclaims Emily, immediately scooping up the file and beginning to pour through the contents. "That's even better than dirty talk!"
She doesn't quite realize what she has said until she hears him laughing at her. Micah had anticipated her excitement, but the ever unpredictable "Emily-ness" of her response has once again caught him off guard and delighted him.
"I didn't...What I meant was...This is very romantic...Thank you!" stammers Emily, clutching the file against her chest as she tries to clarify her reaction.
An amused Micah opens his mouth to respond when his beeper goes off. "Gotta go" he sighs, checking his pager before looking back at Emily. "Take a look and see what you think. I'll catch up with you later."
He only takes a few steps before turning around to talk to her as he backs away slowly, eyes twinkling and an impish smile on his face. "And just so you know, I have plenty of dirty talk where that came from, Baby! When you get tired of surgical procedures, we can start on diseases and medical conditions!"
"Micah!" exclaims Emily in warning as he turns and nearly collides with a pair of approaching Attendings who are staring at him in bewilderment.
"Doctors," says Micah in acknowledgement before clearing his throat and rushing past.
Emily also averts her eyes from the approaching physicians, turning quickly back to the file she had been reading before the interruption. However, she suddenly notices out of the corner of her eye that the handful of nurses around her are all staring at her. When she finally gains enough courage to look up, there is a sudden flurry of paperwork and scrubs as everyone rushes back to work. Emily decides to target the nurse typing at the computer almost directly in front of her with some sort of an explanation in an attempt to head off the rumor mill.
"It's really…" Emily begins, only to be cut off by the nurse's outstretched hand.
"I didn't say anything" says the nurse matter-of-factly, not even looking in Emily's direction before plunging back into her work.
"O-kay…" mouths Emily, grimacing slightly before collecting her files and heading for her office. She suddenly wonders how long it will be before Tyra calls and wants to know what the heck happened at the nurse's station today.
