Bob and Tammy become recurring characters in their lives. Micah usually jokes that it keeps them young. Emily usually follows with a retort that it certainly keeps them ridiculous. She is always more embarrassed about the role play than he is, but they both know she secretly enjoys it just as much.

During one particularly dull surgical conference, they decide to amuse themselves by spending an entire evening out on the town as Bob and Tammy. Because neither of them is quite daring enough to risk an awkward professional encounter, they take the time to scout out a local establishment where they are fairly sure they won't run into any colleagues. Nevertheless, once the game begins, their characterizations become crazier and crazier, eventually resulting in an unspoken competition to see who can scare off the most conversationalists, or even better, who can trick the other into breaking character. In the end, it turns out that Bob and Tammy have 4 kids with horrendous names and a variety of ailments, some significant money problems they aren't ashamed to talk about in public, and a plethora of stories about crazy friends and family.

While Tammy is quite the gossip, it turns out to be Bob who turns away more people by being able to drone on and on about ridiculously mundane topics. After they have scared a fifth person away with an uncomfortably long and detailed monologue from Bob concerning the history of problems they've been having with their lawnmower and a detailed description of the layout of their yard, Micah turns to Emily and smiles smugly.

"I had no idea you knew that much about lawnmowers, Bob" says Emily, lifting her drink to her lips in what she intends to be a suave move. Instead, she almost chokes as the song in the background changes. Putting down her drink, she grabs Micah's hand and practically drags him off the barstool. "It's our song!" she cries, completely forgetting Tammy in her excitement. "You have to dance with me!"

"You know I don't dance…and since when do we have a song?" responds Micah, planting his feet against her tugging as he regains his balance.

Emily resorts back to Tammy mode at that point, slinking up to him and running her hands up his arms and around his neck as she whines, "Boooobbbbb, You LOVE dancing! Come on, baby! Dance with me!"

Micah sighs, unwilling to be the one to call an end to their act, and let's her lead them to an open spot of floor where two or three other couples are wrapped around each other.

As she settles into his arms, Emily wonders again what exactly it is that Micah has against dancing. She loves this feeling of swaying slowly to the music while he holds her. She wonders if he knows he sometimes unconsciously hums along.

After a moment, she leans back to see Micah's face.

"What?" he asks suspiciously.

"Do you think Bob and Tammy are happy?"

He looks puzzled and then amused. It's a decidedly Emily-like question, and he decides not to overanalyze what could possibly be going on in her head that suddenly makes it so important to be reassured that the relationship of their comic alter egos is stable.

"I dunno" he hedges. "The mortgage is certainly depressing."

"Especially with the 4 kids." Emily sighs.

"And the broken lawnmower." Adds Micah.

"I'm afraid Tammy wants to quit her job." mourns Emily. "She's just not feeling fulfilled at the travel agency anymore. Helping all those people have exciting adventures and not being able to afford one herself…."

Micah thinks about that a minute. "Bob has a promotion opportunity coming up. I bet they can figure out a way to make it work if that's what Tammy needs right now." He waits until Emily meets his eyes again. "He loves her, you know."

Emily smiles at him and blushes slightly as she realizes he isn't talking about Bob and Tammy anymore. The night of pretend is over, and they are back to being Micah and Emily: busy, successful, happy, and incredibly in love with each other. "I love you, too" she says quietly.

They stop dancing as the song changes to something more upbeat, feeling content to just stand there for a moment, gazing into each others' eyes.

"Are you ready to go?" asks Micah, finally. "I have to present again tomorrow."

"Yeah" says Emily with a smile. "Let's get out of here, Bob."

Arms still around each other, they head for the door.
