Emily sighs contentedly as she puts another word into place. There is something so therapeutic about crossword puzzles—tackling them one word at a time and watching the tangle of letters form.
"Do you want me to get us some coffee?" she asks absently, looking at the next puzzle clue. Not hearing a response, she glances up over the rims of her glasses at Micah who, at this moment, is anything but content. Pacing the floor in front of her, his face wears an uncharacteristic scowl. She looks on as he checks his watch and rubs his face in frustration before completing his loop around the room and beginning again.
"Micah?"
"Hmm?" he asks, still pacing. He is half way across the room again before he stops suddenly and looks at her as if just realizing she's there. "Sorry. Did you say something?"
Emily can't hide the laughter in her voice. "I asked if you wanted coffee."
"Not at the moment." He says with a sigh, coming over to sit beside her as the brooding look returns to his face.
Emily takes a moment to admire his profile. He's still Micah Barnes, but his hair is now an attractive shade of silver, and he wears glasses. Her gaze moves across his face, cataloging the lines and wrinkles that have formed there over time. After a long run as a competent surgeon and a respected chief of staff, retirement suits him well. However, there are still rare moments, such as the situation they find themselves in today, when the young Micah Barnes shows through and she can't believe how many years have passed since they met in this very hospital on the first day of her Internship. While she might be willing to give him credit for being older and wiser than when they met, he is certainly still terrible at waiting.
"What?" he asks quizzically, catching her staring at him with amusement.
"Nothing." She replies quickly.
He smirks at her. "You have always been a terrible liar." He says.
She smirks back, "Well in that case, I was just thinking about how you have always been terrible at waiting."
Micah frowns suddenly. "I can wait."
Emily shakes her head in disagreement as she goes back to her crossword puzzle. "I'm sorry, dear, but you can't. Lab results, surgeries, picking up the kids…. The minute you think something is taking too long, you start checking your watch constantly and getting all antsy and anxious."
"I'm excellent at waiting! Being a good doctor involves a lot of waiting!"
"You used to use food to bribe the technicians for lab results!"
"You did that too!"
"Only because you taught me to!" exclaims Emily defensively, the crossword now lying forgotten in her lap again. "Plus, they were usually YOUR lab results!"
At this, they both begin to laugh.
"If you don't want coffee, let's at least take a little walk and get some fresh air." She suggests.
Micah groans and gets up from his seat to begin pacing again. "I just don't understand why we haven't heard anything. Don't you think we should have heard something by now?" he asks.
Emily sighs before going back to her puzzle. "These things take as long as they take. Of all people, you should know that."
Micah scowls at her and opens his mouth to respond when something behind Emily catches his eye and his expression completely changes. When she turns, she sees their adult son coming towards them, a wide grin across his face. "Just like Micah's grin," thinks Emily with satisfaction, rising to join her husband as he holds out a hand for her.
"It's a girl!" announces their son when both parents are finally standing before him expectantly.
"Grandma" thinks Emily, trying the title on for size as they exchange hugs and ask for details. It hardly seems possible that her life has progressed to this point already. She wonders idly if Intern Emily Owens could ever truly have imagined what a happy life and beautiful family she would someday share with the man who was first introduced to her as her Resident. She wouldn't trade one moment of it for anything in the world.
Establishing that both mother and baby are doing fine, Micah immediately asks the next most pressing question on his mind. "When can we see her?"
Their son's eyes narrow as he considers his father. "Wow, Dad, I forgot how bad you are at waiting."
Micah frowns; Emily just laughs.
