Despite having a million things to accomplish, Dr. Micah Barnes can't help pausing for a moment when he hears her voice coming out of the room he is passing. He remembers this case from rounds and automatically runs the stats in his head before entering: 42 year old female, mother of two, chronic GI complications, waiting for test results. Upon entering, he finds Emily and the patient bent over a piece of colored paper, laughing.
"Everything okay in here?" He asks with an amused smile as the two women turn to him.
"Oh hi!" says Emily, smiling at him. "Deb was just showing me some of her children's artwork. It's quite…original" she says with a sly smile at Deb. The two women burst into gales of laughter again.
"I see" says Micah with a raised eyebrow.
"I'm sorry" says Emily, wiping at her eyes as she collects herself. "Did you need something, Dr. Barnes?"
"Barnes?" says the patient to Emily quietly. "Is HE the one?" She looks at Micah appreciatively and he feels his face flush slightly.
"Yeah" says Emily, smiling affectionately as she looks at him. "He's all mine." Looking back at the patient, she adds, "He loved your chicken casserole by the way. Thanks for the recipe! You were right. It was so easy!"
"I told you it was a winner." Says Deb proudly, blushing slightly.
Micah takes a step further into the room. "You didn't tell me it was a recipe from a patient!" he exclaims good-naturedly.
"Well, I have to observe Doctor/Patient Confidentiality." Emily replies teasingly.
"Well, I DID like it, so if you have any more where that came from, be sure to let your doctor know." Micah says to Deb, shooting Emily one last smile as he turns to go.
"Dr. Barnes?" Emily's voice calls him back. "Have we heard anything about test results yet?" she asks hopefully.
"I'm afraid not" says Micah regretfully. "It shouldn't be much longer" he adds, noticing Deb is looking slightly disappointed. "I just popped in because you two sounded like you were having fun."
"I should really get going too" says Emily to Deb. "But I'll be back as soon as we know something."
Micah waits for Emily, and the two walk down the hall to the elevators.
"You really don't need anything?" she asks as he pushes the button.
"No" says Micah with a smile. "I was just drawn to the sound of your voice."
"What?" asks Emily self consciously as Micah continues to just stand there looking at her warmly.
Micah does a quick scan of the hallway before leaning in and kissing her. "I know Gina has always thought it was borderline unprofessional, but I think the way you are able to put patients at ease is sexy," he says with a smile as he pulls away.
Emily blushes a little and opens her mouth to say something when her pager beeps. "Test results!" she says excitedly when she checks it. She shoots him one last smile and pecks him on the lips before scurrying away happily.
Micah chuckles at her enthusiasm and turns back to get on the elevator as the doors open. As he pushes the button for the 2nd floor he thinks again about how lucky he is to have Emily Owens in his life.
