34. Heartless
People outside of their group cannot understand how they work together.
Ed is a barrel of anger and sorrow and hope, with an outer shell of sarcasm and swearing, that will explode at the slightest prod. He hates stupid people and people who try and interfere with him and his life. She hates people who believe because she is now a girl, she is delicate. She hates people who try to help her and act nicely around her because they want to try and trick her into a bed. Ed is a force of chaos that is impossible to control, who makes her own way and treads her own path, no matter what price she has to pay, despite the prices he has paid.
Greed is a sarcastic, arrogant arsehole that makes no apologies and calls them all his possessions. He thinks nothing of stealing, of injuring, of killing; unless it contradicts the few morals he has. He doesn't really know who he is underneath that, still discovering old memories and feelings and reactions. He is the personification of avarice, a deadly sin, the core of his being is made up of souls of other humans and he cannot die.
Heinkel and Darius are mockeries of humans. They are chimeras, experiments of alchemy, melding people with animals. Animal instincts fighting with human logic, animal features replacing human ones, a battle of genetics and it's unclear which side will win the final battle. They are trained killers, soldiers of choice and career, and of dubious morality.
Ling no longer has a proper body and therefore lacks proper representation in their little group. For one born a Prince, being ignored and forgotten is a new feeling. He is a powerful figure that is reaching for his own goal that will eventually bring him away from the group. He has deadly skills and is willing to use them, as well as being willing to do anything to achieve his end goal. He cares very little for the future of Amestris, and his sole purpose is to become emperor of Xing.
To outsiders, they all seem cold and heartless, focused on themselves and personal gain. The only two that seem capable of working together are Heinkel and Darius and they portray themselves as a single unit anyhow.
[They laugh, knowing how they fit together, and if people are too stupid to pick up on the subtle gestures of affection between them, then that's their problem, innit?]
