run, i'm a natural disaster
41. Servant
It's a revelation to Ed when she returns to Amestris that the tabloids call her a "Hero of Amestris". It's even more of a revelation that the headlines state that she is a "lowly servant to the Xingese Emperor". Some go as far as to call her his "bitch" or his "slave". They protest that she deserves to be treated as a high government official, not some whore off of the streets. They say it is their right to have their "national hero/heroine" in Amestris and for her to stay there.
She laughs it off, and buys it to show the others later, so they can laugh as well.
Newsflash: They don't.
Ling looks a bit sad, mouth drooping as he reads it, forgetting his squinty-eyed act so Ed can see every pang of pain that goes through his eyes.
Lan Fan doesn't laugh either, not that Ed expected her to, instead nearly getting angry enough to stab both Ed and the paper, and demanding permission to assassinate the journalists.
Darius and Heinkel read it worriedly, desperate to know the government's official position on this; cross because freedom of the press sounds like a good thing but really blows a lot of private matters out of proportion.
It all makes Ed feel a little worse, wondering whether it would be this big of an issue if she was still male, instead of "vulnerable" and "fragile". She knows that she's just as strong as before, but sometimes other people don't think so. She wonders if she had persuaded Al to go with her, or waited until he wanted to go to Xing, whether there would still be the outcry from the citizens, the hate from the public towards one of her best friends- the other parts of her adopted family.
She's sitting on the steps of the Amestrian house, specially purchased for the Emperor on his travels there, feeling a little melancholy. Then she hears footsteps behind her.
"Hi, Greed," she sighs, looking at the stars.
"Hello, Kitten." His voice is infinitely more cheerful and self-satisfied that anyone she has ever heard, even herself and the bastard Mustang. "Why are you so sad? Is it that article?"
"I thought it was funny," she manages, "But it upset everyone." Greed places his finger over her lips.
"It's wrong. You know that and we know that and it just made everyone a little tense. Especially me actually," He looks up, and wraps his arms around her, a welcome weight around her shoulders as they both look at the stars. "Because you belong to me, not the idiot prince."
Ed shoves him playfully and then they're rolling around, all undignified, on the grounds, laughing too much to remember why they were upset.
