Chapter 13: Movement

It was a couple of weeks after their incident with Kyle, and Morgan was sat at home feeling guilty about not doing any work; both her father and Greg had insisted she take some time off to rest her healing rib before coming back to the lab, they didn't want her or the baby to get hurt any further. And, if Morgan thought Greg was being protective before, then he was going into overdrive now.

Greg was not at all happy about leaving Morgan at home whilst he was at work in case something happened, but then he didn't want her straining herself at work either so that left him in a muddle. Between looking after Morgan, working ,and getting the house sorted out, Greg barely seemed to sleep anymore and Morgan could swear he was starting to look a little thinner these days – although maybe that was just because she was getting bigger.

So, as a thank you, Morgan decided to do something nice for her husband and cook him a three course meal so that they could share some relaxing downtime together – because they sure as hell weren't going to get much of that when the baby was born.

Morgan was stood humming along to the radio as she cut vegetables for some soup, when there was a knock at the door. Placing the knife down, she went to answer it.

"Hey, dad!" she said with grin.

"Hi, M" Ecklie said with a rare smile and pulled his daughter into a hug "wow, you're getting bigger!"

"Thanks dad, that's really what I need to hear" Morgan said sarcastically as she pulled away "Come in"

"Something smells good" Ecklie commented "And here I was thinking you couldn't even cook toast"

"Erm, what is this, pick on your daughter day?" Morgan asked incredulously "I'm not a total failure at life…"

"Oh sweetie, of course you're not" Ecklie said with a light laugh as he placed an arm around Morgan and squeezed her shoulder "I'm so proud of you, for everything" he said with a smile.

"Thanks, dad" Morgan said sincerely this time.

They went into the kitchen and Morgan went on preparing the food whilst Ecklie sat with some coffee at the table.

"I'm surprised your mother hasn't come rushing over yet" Ecklie commented.

"She's coming to stay a couple of weeks next month" Morgan replied.

"Ah, well then you better be prepared for a full blown takeover" Eckile joked.

"Mmm, Greg already has" Morgan said "He just hasn't stopped; I wish he wouldn't worry so much…"

"He's your husband, M, and you're carrying his baby, he's bound to worry" Ecklie replied "I worry, and after what happened I think it's understandable. It's just what happens when you love someone a lot"

"Yeah, I guess" Morgan said with a small smile "I hope he enjoys this dinner though, tell me, is it supposed to be this colour?" she asked showing her father the pan and they both laughed. Morgan put the pan back on the heat and something suddenly felt different inside her "Whoa" she breathed placing her hands on her stomach.

"M, what is?" Ecklie asked worriedly when he saw a slight flash of pain cross his daughter's face. "Are you alright?"

"Yeah, yeah I'm fine" and for some reason she smiled, causing Ecklie to frown in confusion "the baby, I can feel it moving properly now" she said with a grin "They're kicking like crazy!"

"Not on your rib, though?" Ecklie asked still concerned, but Morgan shook her head.

"No, right here on my stomach, you can feel it!" she said, approaching her father and placing his hand on the spot.

It was not often Ecklie was rendered speechless, but as he felt the slight tapping against his hand as the baby moved around inside his daughter, a smile of amazement broke across his face.

"That's them, that's my grandchild" he said happily.

"Yeah" Morgan said with a small smile. She was pleased, but she couldn't help but feel a little sad that Greg was missing it.

The baby soon settled down again, and Morgan sat with her father talking whilst the food was cooking. She told him all about her plans for the house and things they still needed to buy for the baby; Ecklie insisted on paying for the crib and a stroller; he still felt bad for not being there for Morgan much when she was a kid, so he was going to make up for it by spoiling his grandchild rotten.

Eventually, Ecklie had to return to the lab and not soon after, Greg arrived home. The father-to-be was surprised to enter the apartment smelling so fragrant and homely. Morgan came rushing into greet him with a huge smile on her face, immediately pulling him into a tight hug.

"Baby, it was so amazing!" she said excitedly, leaving Greg confused "It was the most amazing feeling in the world, like butterflies having a rave in my stomach"

"Sweetie, what are you talking about?" Greg asked.

"The baby, it was moving around and kicking earlier" Morgan smiled.

"Wow, that's great!" Greg said enthusiastically as he pulled Morgan into another hug "I can't believe I missed it" he added a little sadly.

"I know baby, but they'll be plenty of other times you can feel it" Morgan tried to reassure him.

"Anyway, what smells so good?" Greg asked.

Morgan just smiled even more and started to pull him into the kitchen. Greg's eyes widened in surprise as the table was perfectly laid with candles flickering away and a bunch of flowers brightening up the room.

"What's all this for?" Greg enquired.

"Well, you've been working so hard lately that Bump and I thought you deserved a treat" Morgan smiled softly.

Greg smiled and wrapped his arms around Morgan's waist "Thank you, but you don't have to do all this for me. I want to do all the things I'm doing because I like taking care of you and Bump. I'd be a pretty bad husband and father if I didn't"

"Sweetie, you could never be a bad husband or father" Morgan said as she cupped Greg's cheek with her hand and gave him a soft kiss "But you just need to slow down, okay? Have some you time, or else you'll wear yourself into the ground. So tonight, you're going to let me take care of you, no arguments"

"Alright" Greg smiled "Thank you for all of this, I'm sure it'll be delicious"

"I sure hope so" Morgan laughed and Greg pulled her into a loving, and gentle kiss. "And that's all you're getting for now" Morgan teased a she lightly pushed Greg away "Go relax whilst I finish up here"

"Okay, I'm going to go take a shower" Greg said and snatched one last peck on the lips before leaving the room.

Morgan set about plating up the food, when she suddenly felt the same familiar sensation of the baby moving around in her, our baby; it brought tears to Morgan's eyes. 5 months ago Greg was told he couldn't have children, and now here Morgan was, the baby of her one true love moving around inside her – it was beginning to feel so real now; they were going to be parents.

"Greg!" Morgan called, not wanting him to miss it again.

Greg quickly came hurrying into the kitchen; his hair was still dripping wet and he was only wearing a pair of boxers – Morgan had to remind herself not to get so distracted by his toned body right now.

"What's wrong? Is Bump okay?" Greg asked frantically. Morgan rolled her eyes; she should have known he'd have a similar reaction to Ecklie's.

"The baby's moving again" she grinned.

"Oh…" Greg stuttered; he looked very surprised "Can…can I…"

"Yes, you don't need to ask!" Morgan laughed at his nervousness.

"Okay" Greg said and delicately reached a hand forward placing it on Morgan's stomach. He frowned "I can't feel anything"

"Yeah, they just stopped" Morgan said biting her lip "I'm sorry sweetie, next time" she said rubbing Greg's back.

Greg still looked sad though "Why do they not get excited when I'm around?" he asked disappointedly "what if it's because Bump doesn't like me" he said quietly.

"Oh sweetie, don't be ridiculous" Morgan said pulling her husband into a tight hug "This baby loves you, they know you're their daddy" she pulled away and hated seeing the miserable look in Greg's eyes "I bet I know why it is" she smiled.

"Why?" Greg sniffed.

"Because you calm them down" Morgan said rubbing his arms "Bump knows that they're safe around you so they know they can relax. They just want to sit still and listen to you because they love you"

"You really think that's it?" Greg asked hopefully.

"Yes, I really do" Morgan said with a soft smile before gently kissing him on the lips "Now c'mon foods ready" she said once they pulled apart "So go put some clothes on, or else your practically naked body will distract me from eating"

"As long as it's not in a repulsed way" Greg jibed at himself.

"Hey, don't even suggest such a thing" Morgan said sternly and Greg laughed lightly.

"You are too good to me" he claimed before heading to the bedroom.

Greg returned a few minutes later in a pair of sweatpants and his old Stanford jumper. Well I was wrong Morgan thought his sexiness still distracts me.

The couple sat and talked about each other's day all the way through the meal, and they just enjoyed being in each other's company away from the pressures of work, and both forgetting about the horrible event which had taken place a few weeks ago. Greg would often comment on how delicious the food was and Morgan couldn't help but be pleased with herself; Greg finally seemed to be relaxing, just as she'd wanted.

After diner, Greg and Morgan spent the rest of the night curled up on the sofa watching a movie. Greg kept his hand still on Morgan's stomach just in case, but he couldn't help but be disappointed he hadn't felt the baby move yet.

They eventually headed to bed, and whilst Greg was in the bathroom brushing his teeth, Morgan felt the baby begin to move again. She placed both hands on her stomach and smiled at the wonderful yet strange feeling, but it was a feeling she was sure she could get used to.

Greg entered to find Morgan sat smiling to herself, and he raised a questioning eyebrow at her, although Morgan understood what it meant. She nodded her head eagerly and Greg quickly slipped over onto the bed and placed a hand on his wife's stomach. And there it was, the sensation of Bump pressing their little foot up against his hands; considering Greg had been told he would never be able to get Morgan pregnant, the feeling soon brought tears to his eyes.

"That's amazing" he said "I can't believe it, this is really happening, this is our baby" and, just as Morgan suggested, as soon as the baby heard Greg's voice, they began to settle down again.

"I can't believe I'm nearly halfway along" Morgan grinned "We're going to meet our baby soon"

"I know" Greg grinned back "I can't wait"

The couple then shared a deep and passionate kiss before snuggling down under the bed covers.

"Greg, you still think I'm attractive, right?" Morgan asked worriedly as she thought about earlier "Even though I barely fit my clothes anymore…"

"Babe, I can't believe you'd even ask me that question" Greg said pulling Morgan closer "You are, and always will be the most beautiful girl in the world to me, and don't ever think differently"

Morgan adoringly smiled up at her husband "I love you" she said softly.

"I love you too" Greg, placing a delicate kiss on Morgan's lips.

Greg eventually dozed off to sleep, but Morgan was having problems getting comfortable because the baby was moving around so much.

"Look, it was cute at first…" Morgan whispered to the bump "but mommy needs some sleep, you can't be nocturnal already…"

"Morgan…" Greg said drowsily. Morgan flinched; she hadn't wanted to wake him "Who are you talking to?" Greg asked as he rubbed his eyes.

"Bump" Morgan replied as she turned to lie on her back and rubbed her stomach "It was great to feel them moving earlier but now they just won't stop!"

Deciding to put Morgan's theory to the test about the baby feeling more relaxed when hearing his voice; Greg placed a hand on the bump and started to sing in a lulling tone.

"Hush, little baby, don't say a word, mama's gonna buy you a mockingbird. And if that mockingbird won't sing, daddy's gonna buy you a diamond ring…."

Once he'd finished, Greg smiled at soft snores escaping his wife, and he could no longer feel the baby kicking against his hand.

"I love you both" Greg whispered, before placing a kiss on the bump and then on Morgan's forehead. Then he could finally go to sleep.
