Chapter 16: Carrying On
Morgan hadn't moved from Greg's side. He'd been in the hospital for over 12 hours now and after surgery he'd apparently slipped into a coma. Morgan felt like she'd finally cried herself dry as she learned her husband was still in a very critical condition, and all she could do was sit by Greg's side, holding his hand and stroking back his hair, just praying it was bringing him some kind of comfort.
Morgan would sit whispering words to Greg, liking to believe that he could hear her; most of the time she was just begging for him to wake up.
Ecklie spent as much time as possible with his daughter; he hated seeing her so upset, and he didn't like seeing Greg hurt either. Sure, he'd never thought the crazy kid would ever end up marrying his daughter, but Greg made Morgan extremely happy, and he did really love and care for her, and that was something Ecklie would always appreciate the man for.
"Honey, you should go home" Ecklie tried to encourage his daughter "You haven't slept or eaten anything in a little while, it's not good for the baby."
"I know…" Morgan said quietly "I know but…" her voice caught again as she looked at her motionless husband and realised just how much she missed looking into his beautiful brown eyes.
"Hey, Nick should be here any minute now, so Greg won't be alone" Ecklie tried to reassure her "Do you really think Greg would be happy seeing you this way? He'd want you to take care of yourself and the baby"
"Yeah" Morgan said placing a hand on the bump "The baby has been kicking like crazy, probably worried why he or she hasn't heard daddy's voice in so long…Bump misses you, Greg" she whispered as tears fell from her eyes and she squeezed her husband's hand a little tighter "The baby needs to know daddy is still there"
Ecklie just frowned sadly and sat on the arm of Morgan's chair, running a comforting arm up and down her back. Morgan turned and buried her head into her father's shoulder. Apparently she did still have the tears to cry after all.
"Everything will be alright, M" Ecklie said wrapping his arms around his daughter "We'll find out who did this, and then they can rot whilst you, Greg and your baby can go on with your lives. Greg's going to get better"
"He died, dad" Morgan said bluntly "Greg told me he loved us, and then he died!" she started sobbing again.
"But the medics brought him back" Ecklie reminded her "That proves Greg isn't willing to give up, he's willing to fight for you and the baby. So he'll want you to keep fighting too, be strong and take care of yourself. You're gunna be a mom soon, so baby has to come first, and you know Greg would agree, yeah?"
"Yeah" Morgan said quietly as she sat up and rubbed her eyes "When Nick gets here, C-could you take me home, please?"
"Of course, sweetie" Ecklie said, kissing the top of his daughter's head.
The father sat holding his daughter in comfort until Nick eventually arrived. Ecklie explained that he was taking Morgan home, and Nick said that was fine, promising Morgan that he would take good care of Greg for her; Morgan didn't doubt that for a second.
"I'll see you tomorrow, sweetie" Morgan said to Greg as she ran a hand through his hair one more time, and placed a delicate kiss on his too pale forehead. "Wake up soon, okay?"
"I'll call you if anything changes" Nick reassured her "but I talked to the nurse on my way in and she said he was stable for now"
"Well, that's good" Ecklie said.
"Talk to him, Nick" Morgan instructed "I don't want him to think he's alone"
"Of course" Nick said with a small smile, and he shared a hug with the worried blond before Ecklie led a rather reluctant Morgan out of the room. Nick sighed and dropped down in the seat beside Greg's bed "She's a mess without you man, she needs you" the Texan said to his unresponsive friend. "We all need you."
Morgan wasn't quite sure just how she was going to sleep. After Ecklie had taken her home, the concerned father made sure Morgan ate something and then sent her straight off to bed – Morgan teased how it made her feel like a kid again, but Ecklie could tell she was only trying to mask her hurt with some loose humour.
Now, as Morgan lay alone in the double bed, she found herself missing Greg more than ever. She'd gotten so use to having her husband next to her every night, being held by his strong and comforting arms, and suddenly not having that safety there made it extremely hard to get to sleep. Morgan sighed after a while of trying to let her eyes close. She lay on her back, absentmindedly tracing circular patterns on her protruding stomach.
It was her 20 week scan in two days, and she would be given the opportunity to choose if she wanted to know the babies sex or not. Morgan personally hadn't wanted to know until the baby was born, she wanted it to be a surprise. Greg on the other hand did want to know because he wanted to start buying things for the baby straight away and spoiling it rotten.
Morgan didn't know if she could go to the scan alone, she needed Greg by her side, holding her hand and getting just as excited as she was at seeing their baby again. She couldn't believe he was going to miss it…and all because he'd tried to save people's lives. However, Morgan knew she had to go, Greg would want her too, and maybe if she did ask for the baby's sex, it would be a nice surprise for Greg when he woke up, because he was going to wake up.
"Hush, little baby don't say a word, mama's gunna by you a mocking bird…" Morgan quietly began to sing the same song Greg had all those nights ago, and she and the baby seemed to immediately ease. Greg felt close to them again, and Morgan soon drifted off into a deep sleep.
The next morning, Morgan returned to the hospital after having breakfast and a good sleep; she felt much better for it and was ready to spend another day sat with Greg, although, she was hoping he'd wake up today.
She'd had no news from Nick, which was both a bad things because it meant Greg was still in a coma, but also a good thing because it at least meant her husband hadn't died. Morgan was surprised with the lack of nightmare last night, but she suspected it was the baby- that part of Greg being with her – that had kept her calm.
Ecklie dropped Morgan off at the hospital – not wanting her to drive anymore – and the blond went to Greg's room to find Nick still sat in the chair beside his friend's bed. Morgan smiled at the sleeping man's dedication – Greg really was like a little brother too him, and Nick had kept his promise to both Greg and Morgan.
"Nick?" Morgan said softly as she shook the older man's shoulder lightly.
Nick let out a soft moan before slowly rolling his head back and opening his eyes "I'm too old to be sleeping in chairs" he complained as he rubbed the crick in his neck and Morgan laughed lightly. "Did you get some rest last night?" Nick asked concernedly as he stood up and motioned for Morgan to take his seat.
"Thanks, and yeah I did surprisingly" Morgan told him as she sat by her husband and took his hand "That's not bad of me is it? That my husband's been shot and I can still sleep afterwards…"
"No, of course not" Nick reassured her "Greg will want you to take care of yourself and Bump" he smiled.
Morgana smiled back "Thank you, for staying with him"
"No problem, they'd had to have dragged me out if they wanted me gone" Nick joked and Morgan smiled again; the older man was happy to see she seemed better already. "Anyway, I should go, call me of anything changes?"
"Yeah, of course" Morgan agreed and the pair shared a quick hug before Nick left the room.
Morgan sat by Greg's side just telling him how Bump was doing; she didn't want him to miss anything. The scan was tomorrow and Morgan had decided she wanted to find out the sex so Greg had a nice surprise when he woke up.
A couple of hours later there was a knock at the door, and a man and a pregnant woman entered the room.
"Hello" the woman said "Are you Greg's wife?"
"Yes" Morgan said with a smile as she stood up to meet the pair.
"I'm Beca" the woman said, shaking Morgan's hand. "And this is my husband, Neil, I was in the store with Greg when…" she trailed off and looked at the floor a she placed a hand on her bump.
"Your husband risked his life to save my wife and our unborn child" Neil continued as he put an arm around his wife for support.
"Yes, that does sound like my husband" Morgan said with a lopsided smile as she looked back at the bed.
"I-I'm so sorry that this happened" Beca said with tears in her eyes "Greg t-told me about your baby…and I've been praying for him ever since."
"We don't know how we can ever thank him enough" Neil smiled.
"Just knowing that you guys are okay will be enough for him" Morgan said honestly "And you don't have to be sorry, it's not your fault, Greg's just…he's amazing, the most selfless man I've ever known"
"He certainly is" Neil agreed "We just wanted to say thank you, and wish Greg a fast recovery and your baby to have good health"
"Well, thank you" Morgan smiled "We really appreciate it" she added as she placed both hands on her stomach.
"Do let us know when he's better" Beca said handing over a card with a number "We'd like to thank him personally"
"Of course" Morgan agreed. "And you take care too"
"Thank you" Beca smiled "I would give you a hug, but it appears we'll have quite a barrier" she said pointing between their stomach and Morgan laughed.
After that, the couple left and Morgan went back to sitting by Greg's side.
"You really are a hero" she whispered as she stroked a hand though Greg's hair "I love you" she added, placing a delicate kiss on Greg's forehead.
A little while later and Finn came to visit; she was the only CSI who hadn't had chance to see Greg yet, but she was apprehensive about seeing him that way. After greeting Morgan and giving Greg's hand a light squeeze, Finn sat with the younger CSI and talked to Morgan about the investigation.
"We thought we'd caught all the robbers. We arrested four, but when we checked the security tape we found five" Finn explained.
"One of them escaped?" Morgan asked worriedly.
"We think so, and by the looks of the camera, he was the guy who shot Greg" Finn said regrettably. Morgan held her husband's hand a little tighter "But we couldn't catch the guy's face, so we're Greg can identify him when he wakes up"
Morgan just nodded sadly; but she was also angry that the man who did this to her husband was still out there. Then, the younger CSI had sudden thought.
"Finn, can I ask you a favour? It's okay if you say no…"
"Sure, anything, Morgan" Finn smiled.
"I have a scan tomorrow, would you come with me?" Morgan asked.
"Of course!" Finn said "I'd be happy too"
"Great, thanks" Morgan smiled and then looked back at Greg with loving eyes "Just wake up soon, sweetie"
The next day, and as promised Finn picked Morgan up to take her for the scan. Doctor Green greeted Morgan and said how sorry she was to hear about Greg. She then asked Morgan to lie down on the table and started to apply the gel.
"This is so exciting!" Finn beamed and Morgan just laughed at her enthusiasm "I've never seen a baby scan before…"
"Is this your first niece or nephew?" Morgan asked.
Finn smiled at the thought "Yeah, yeah it is"
Doctor Green showed them the baby, and assured Morgan everything was still developing fine. Morgan didn't take her eyes off the screen the whole time; she was highly pleased everything was alright, but she wished Greg could be here to see it.
"Would you like to know the sex?" Doctor Green asked.
"Yes please" Morgan replied.
The doctor moved the scan around a little "Well, congratulations Morgan, you and Greg are having a baby girl"
"A girl?" Morgan repeated with tears of joy in her eyes. Finn smiled and gave the younger woman's hand a quick squeeze "We're having a baby girl" the mother-to-be whispered, as though Greg would hear her.
Name suggestions anyone!? ;)
