Chapter 18: Comeuppance

Ecklie insisted on coming with Nick and Brass when they went to arrest Kyle Davies. The sheriff was furious that everyone had failed to mention the fact the psychotic man had been freed due to lack of evidence, and now the father of Ecklie's grandchild had ended up severely hurt, and someone had to pay. That person would be Kyle Davies.

That man had ruined his daughter and her family ever since he'd returned, and Ecklie was not going to stand for it anymore. Morgan was his daughter, he loved her with all his heart, and he never wanted to see that much upset in her eyes again, especially not at the hands of some god forsaken petty criminal.

Ecklie had always known something was wrong with that boy; ever since Morgan first brought him home all those years ago. He should have done something to stop it back then, and then the present would not be as messed up as it currently was. Naturally, Ecklie would feel guilty even if there was nothing he could do to prevent the situation, because that was just what fathers do. He was supposed to protect his daughter, and Ecklie felt he had failed Morgan. Well, no more, besides, Ecklie knew Davies was a dead man if he let Nick get his hands on him.

Nick, like Ecklie, was taking this very personally. Again, it was to do with that sense of failure in protecting his family, biological or not, Greg and Morgan were like his younger siblings, and he had another niece on the way. Nick had always had the protective drive over the other CSIs as he himself – as the youngest – had always been protected by his brother and sisters.

As far as Nick was concerned, Kyle Davies was toast, how dare he shoot Greg out of what was just clearly petty jealously, Greg was twice the man that idiotic bastard would ever be, and that's why Greg deserved Morgan far more.

Surprisingly, Kyle had been smart enough not to return to his apartment after the robbery. Unsurprisingly, he had not been smart enough to leave Vegas. After sending out a warning to the public, someone had called in to say they had spotted Kyle huddled away in some dark alley as he counted through his stolen cash.

The caller stayed at the scene to make sure Kyle didn't escape until LVPD arrived. Brass thanked the man and sent him on his way; this was personal business now. Brass had felt the sense of guilt too, ever since he let Kyle knock Morgan over that day, but today justice would be done, and the bastard wouldn't be able to hurt anyone any more.

"Kyle Davies" Brass called out as he approached the shadowed figure along with Nick, Ecklie and another officer.

Kyle looked up, his eyes widening in fear. He tried to quickly shove the money back into a duffel bag, but Ecklie ripped it away from him, and Nick grabbed Kyle by the collar of his shirt and lifted him up, turning him, and slamming him up against the wall.

"Hey, police brutality, man!" Kyle said snidely, and then let out a moan of pain as Nick dug his elbow further into the man's back.

"I'm just checking you're not armed, man" Nick said patronisingly "but if you really want me to show you brutality…"

"That's enough, Nick" Ecklie warned, although there was no sympathy for Kyle in his voice. "This bastard's not getting away with it this time, we've caught him red handed. I don't know what kind of pathetic low life thinks they can make a hit on a member of law enforcement and thinks he can get away with it…"

"I am still here ya know…" Kyle mumbled sarcastically, and cried out in pain when Nick pushed his head against the wall.

"Someone who is truly desperate" Brass responded to Ecklie, deciding to let Nick's actions slide "and quite clearly, doesn't want to see the light of day. Ever. Again."

"He's all yours" Nick mumbled as he callously flung Davies over the waiting officer "get him out of my sight before I wring him through"

"And don't think you'll be getting out this time" Ecklie added as he firmly folded his arms "I will do everything in my power to keep you away from my daughter"

Kyle smirked "Ya know it's funny, Morgan said she was really into the bad boy type, she likes it rough, she begged for it" he jibed.

There was no stopping them then, as both Nick and Ecklie dived at Kyle. Brass managed to pull Nick back, but not before the Texan managed to knock Kyle down with a swift kick to his shin. Ecklie then stood over the man and punched him square in the jaw.

"Don't you ever talk about my daughter like that!" Ecklie yelled, before dropping Kyle to the ground, and the officer stepped in to cuff the criminal.

Ecklie stood back breathing heavily and with a hand on his forehead trying to calm his seething mind. Nick was still struggling with Brass, but the police captain let him go when Kyle was taken away.

"Let me take it from here, okay?" Brass said to them.

"That son-of- a-bitch…" Nick scowled.

"Nick, just go to the hospital, yeah? I'm sure Greg will want to see you now he's awake" Brass encouraged.

"Yeah, yeah okay" Nick conceded; he did want to see how his younger brother was doing after all. "But you keep me updated on everything to do with that bastards trial" he requested, and Brass nodded before the Texan turned and started walking to his car.

Brass sighed feeling mentally and physically exhausted, he looked at Ecklie who still had a deep frown on his face. Brass may not have always gotten along with the newly promoted sheriff, but he knew what worrying over a daughter felt like, even if it was in a completely different way.

"Are you alright?" Brass asked.

"I am now" Ecklie replied, much more together currently "At least, I will be when I know this bastard is behind bars for good"

"You let me take care of that" Brass said with a small smile, and clapped Ecklie on the back as he walked by.

Ecklie returned the small smile of appreciation and then let out a sigh. He couldn't believe he'd flipped like that, but just to hear that disgusting man say such things about Morgan- his daughter – it had formed a rage within Ecklie he hadn't felt in a long time. But he knew he never wanted to feel it ever again.

Meanwhile at the hospital, Greg was wide awake now and feeling better than he did the previous time he'd come around. Morgan had spent all the time telling him about what the doctor said about the baby and Greg was so saddened and annoyed that he'd missed it, but at least he was here now, and they could start being a proper family.

"I guess now we know it's a girl, we should start thinking about names" Morgan said as she absentmindedly rubbed her protruded stomach.

"Yeah…about that" Greg said with a sheepish grimace.

Morgan gave him a flat look "What did you do?"

"It's nothing really, it's just… a few weeks ago when you were out with Sara and Finn, Nick and I went to this bar. We got a little drunk and we bet on this football game. Anyway, my team lost, and as payment I sort of promised Nick if that baby was a boy, his middle name would be Nicholas"

"Well we don't have to worry about that, it's a girl" Morgan said with confusion.

"Yeah…I said if it was a girl her middle name would be Nicole" he said biting his bottom lip nervously.

To his relief Morgan just smirked and rolled her eyes "Greg!"

"Look, we were drunk, we weren't being serious" Greg tried to defend himself "besides Nick got the worst end of the deal, I made him promise the same thing. If he ever had a boy his middle name would have been Gregory"

"And if it was a girl?" Morgan asked.

"Still Gregory, there is no female equivalent of my name" her husband replied seriously, and then the pair started laughing. "But I know it was a joke, and so does Nick, he won't hold me to it, I hope" he mumbled.

"What about me?" Nick asked as he walked into the room.

"Apparently you and Greg named my child without me" Morgan said with a lopsided smile.

"Oh, yeah" Nick said rubbing his neck awkwardly and then sitting down next to Morgan "We were just messing around…but that means Greg still owes me" he added with a smirk.

"Well then I think I have the perfect solution" Greg said with a look at Morgan, and she knew what he was going to suggest.

"Nick, we've been talking, and we would be honoured if you would be our baby's Godfather" Morgan said with a smile.

"Yes! Yes I would love to!" Nick exclaimed happily and pulled Morgan into a hug; the blond laughed, she didn't remember seeing Nick so giddy.

"Good, because we need a free babysitter" Greg smirked as he shared a hug with Nick too. "Exactly how many God kids do you have now?" he asked when they pulled away.

"Oh, Bump will be my third" Nick said "But I have…" he paused to think for a moment "fifteen nieces and nephews" he said a little uncertainly.

"Fifteen!" Morgan exclaimed in shock "And you can name them all?"

"Of course I can! I'm a very good Uncle thank you very much" Nick said smugly; Greg and Morgan laughed. "Yes, eight nieces and seven nephews. My oldest nephew is twenty seven now, got a kid of his own on the way! And my youngest niece is… three"

"Great, so you will have a lot of experience babysitting" Greg smirked.

"Sure, I've been doing it since I was sixteen!" Nick beamed.

"You were so lucky growing up with such a big family" Morgan said "It got kinda lonely sometimes being an only child"

"Hey, watch out. man, first one isn't even born and she's already asking for another" Nick teased as he nudged Greg's shoulder.

Greg smirked "Yeah, but I don't have to worry about that….I-I don't think I can…" he trailed off sadly.

"Sweetie…" Morgan said sadly as she moved to sit on Greg's bed "It doesn't matter, we have our miracle baby, and if we want more in the future, we always said adoption was a possibility, remember?"

"You shouldn't feel bad, G, it's not something you can control" Nick added.

Greg gave them a small smile of appreciation, but then decided he might as well ask the question which had been bugging him whilst the mood was already dampened.

"Did you find Kyle?" he asked.

Even the sound of the guy's name made Nick frown in a hatful way. "Yes, actually I came straight to see you after we arrested him"

"So…you didn't kill him?" Morgan asked dubiously.

"No, but your dad almost did" Nick mumbled "It was…pretty awesome, actually"

"My dad!?" Morgan asked in disbelief "What did he do!?"

"Straight out punched the guy in his pathetic lil' face" Nick recalled.

"Way to go, Ecklie" Greg smirked.

"So that's it, Kyle is definitely going away for good now?" Morgan asked a little worriedly as she rested a protective hand on her stomach.

"Yes, your dad guaranteed it quite explicitly" Nick said "I thought I'd seen Ecklie pissed off before, but I'd seen nothing"

"I better go and call him" Morgan said worriedly and left the room.

Greg started asking Nick questions about the fight; a little disappointed he wasn't in on it himself.

"Hello?"

"Hey, dad"Morgan had called her father whilst absentmindedly strolling the corridor "I just wanted to call and make sure you were okay, Nick said you were really…upset" she settled on.

"I'm fine, don't worry about me" Ecklie said smiling at his daughter's concern "As long as you're okay, I'm okay"

"Good, because I'm great at the moment" Morgan smiled "Thanks, dad, for taking care of Kyle…and for taking care of us, and I mean that in a complete contrast" she chuckled.

"Well that's just what dads are for, M" Ecklie replied "That bastard hurt my daughter and her family; I wasn't going to let him get away with it, again"

"And it wasn't your fault he got away with it the first time" Morgan firmly reminded him.

"I know" Ecklie responded, although Morgan wasn't sure she believed him "Anyway I better go, gotta sort out a court day for this son of a bitch"

"Okay, bye dad, I love you" Morgan said.

"Love you too, M" Ecklie said, and then hung up the phone.

Morgan sighed before heading back to Greg's room – it was a somewhat content sigh. Everything was falling back into place; Greg was awake, Kyle was gone, their daughter was fine, and they had an amazing family who supported and took care of them. Things were good.
