Chapter 19: Worries

Greg sighed with relief as he finally had the opportunity to take the pressure off his aching hip. It had been 3 months since the shooting, and the recovery of Greg's shattered hip was still an ongoing process. The wound in his abdomen had pretty much healed over and didn't bother him much, but the physical therapy to get him walking again had been tough, although he still had trouble walking for a long period of time, which is why after being out at a crime scene all day, he was happy to finally sit down in the break room with his cup of coffee.

The past 3 months had thankfully been uneventful in terms of Morgan's pregnancy; the baby was developing fine, and Morgan was on maternity leave to take care of her now heavily protruding stomach – she was 8 months along now after all. Between Greg not wanting Morgan to strain herself a she was heavily pregnant, and Morgan not wanting Greg to do anything because he was injured, nothing much got done at home anymore.

The first two months after Greg had been shot mostly consisted of the pair sat in each other's arm watching movies, enjoying their last weeks as just the two of them, but as the due date drew closer both Greg and Morgan could barely contain there excitement – planning for the arrival of their daughter was all they really talked about. They had chosen a few names, but would not make the final decision until the baby was born.

"It depends which name they most look like, you know?" Morgan claimed.

As for their house, the refurbishment had been done, and that just left moving in the furniture. Nick and Russell had been a great help with that whilst Greg was healing, although the father-to-be insisted on helping out as much he could because he felt bad. Little did he know Morgan had had strong words with Nick to make sure Greg rested if it looked like he was doing too much and possibly hurting himself. Morgan knew how stubborn he was about everything being perfect for when the baby arrived – she appreciated and loved him for it, but argued it wasn't worth Greg landing himself back in hospital.

Greg had convinced Morgan not to tell his mother that he'd been shot because he didn't want to worry her. She'd probably realise anyway when she came over when the baby was born.

"Well, what if our daughter got hurt by bullies at school, wouldn't you want her to tell you?" Morgan had argued.

"Of course I would!" Greg exclaimed "I mean girls bitch, but she's not allowed near boys until she's eighteen anyways"

Morgan smiled softly "See that's you being overprotective, the exact thing that you seem to be resenting your mother for"

Greg sighed and looked down, picking up the stuffed elephant he had bought his daughter months before "You think I've been too harsh on my mom, huh?" he asked sheepishly and Morgan nodded. "I guess I'm starting to understand more now why she felt that way"

"Hey" Morgan said moving over and placing a hand on her husband's shoulder "I'm scared too, but parenting comes naturally, it's not something that you learn. That's what my mom told me. Stop worrying so much"

Greg smiled at his wife lovingly "I'm glad this child is going to have at least one sane parent" he said and Morgan laughed. Greg pulled her into a warm embrace "Thank you for keeping it together, and you're already an amazing mom" he whispered.

"You're welcome, and thanks, you're an amazing dad too" Morgan replied.

They stayed hugging in silence for a while before Greg mumbled "I'm still not telling my mom… you didn't tell yours when you got pushed over"

Morgan sighed in defeat "Touché…" she'd let this one slide.

Not long after, and Greg had been allowed to return to work, and although Russell had insisted he stay on lab duty at first, today had been the day Greg was permitted to take a field case again.

"Only because we're busy" Russell had told him "You get tired, you start to feel any pain, you take a break" And that was an order.

So now, Greg sat on the break room sofa, eyes closed and head tilted back as he tried to breathe through the sudden stabbing pain which had appeared in his side. Nick had spotted his younger friend as he was walking by, and smiled sadly as the entered the room.

"You okay, buddy?" Nick asked as he sat next to Greg.

"Yeah, I'll be okay" Greg replied quietly "It just hurts sometimes..."

"Well then, you shouldn't strain yourself" Nick lightly scolded him.

Greg sighed and ran a hand down his face "I have to" he mumbled.

Nick frowned in confusion "Why?"

"Because I have a baby on the way!" Greg said with a light laugh – the whole idea still seemed somewhat absurd. "I can't afford to sit around. I have to take her on walks, and be able to run around and play with her, to get up in the middle of the night to feed her. The only way I'm going to do all that stuff is if I can get my stupid leg to work properly!" he sounded rather frustrated at the end, slapping his numb thigh harshly for emphasis.

"Okay, well that's certainly not going to help" Nick said waving a hand to make him stop. "I understand that you want to be there for your daughter, but that's not going to happen if you push yourself too hard and end up back in the hospital."

Greg sighed and wrung his hands together anxiously "I know, I know. It's just… I feel stuck between a rock and a hard place right now. One month, four weeks, that's all that's left now, and I still don't feel ready"

"Well, I'm not an expert, but I don't think parenthood is something you can ever be ready for" Nick said, and Greg nodded as he remembered Morgan telling him the same thing. "I mean, this is life changing, but in the best way possible. I know you worry a lot about letting people down, but you never could, Greg, you're the most genuine and selfless guy I've ever met."

Greg smiled at him, feeling a little embarrassed "Thanks"

"And don't sweat, okay, because you've got a big family right here who are going to support you and Morgan every step of the way" Nick added sincerely.

"Yeah, I know" Greg said with a small smile "I'm glad we've got Uncle Nick around too"

Nick smiled and patted Greg's arm in appreciation. "So, what's Morgan been up to recently?" Nick asked "I feel like I haven't seen her in ages"

"She's really good, and the babies doing great" Greg explained "Morgan's really big now, although don't say that to her face" he warned and Nick laughed. "I think she's getting a little nervous about the delivery now though."

"Can't blame her" Nick grimaced "My mom is my hero for going through that seven times"

"Agreed" Greg said grimacing too. "Well, it probably didn't help that I told Morgan I'd be stood there in huddle position waiting to catch the baby like football"

Nick laughed "Why would you even say that!?"

"I don't know" Greg laughed too "Although it's safe to say Morgan doesn't have much of a sense of humour at the moment, her hormones have been a little crazy lately, even she admits it"

"That's rough, dude" Nick smirked. "Oh, speak of the devil" he said, nodding down the hall as the men watched Morgan approaching.

"Hey, don't call my wife the devil!" Greg scolded him as he reached inside his jacket and pulled out his wallet. Nick gave him a confused look "There's only one reason she would bother to come and see me when she's this pregnant…" Greg began to explain.

"Oh, good, you've got it out for me already" Morgan beamed as she entered the room.

"My credit card" Greg mumbled and Nick laughed.

Morgan took the piece of plastic from between Greg's fingers. "Thanks sweetie, you're the best" she smiled giving her husband a peck on the lips.

"Glad to know I'm of use for something" Greg said sarcastically.

"Aww, babe, you're good for many things" Morgan said resting her hands on her stomach "Like providing for your family by letting me spend your money on baby grows and stuff" she beamed sweetly.

"I think I'm going to have to get a second job" Greg joked as he stood up and wrapped his arms around his wife. "So, who are you going shopping with?"

"Oh, well my mom just arrived and I'm getting a cab to her hotel to meet her" Morgan explained.

"Okay, well if you start to feel tired or hungry or anything…" Greg started to fret.

"Yeah, yeah I know" Morgan said rolling her eyes, but still with a light smirk "Don't worry, my mom will take care of me. And you" she said turning to Nick "take care of him" she said indicating back to Greg.

"Yes ma'am" Nick said with a small salute.

"Okay, I'll see you later baby, don't be late" Morgan said to her husband.

"I won't. I love you both" Greg replied.

"We love you too" Morgan said, and the pair shared a quick kiss before she left the room.

Greg looked back at Nick and just shrugged, as the older man shook his head, but with a smile on his face.

Morgan knocked on the door of her mother's hotel room and waited excitedly; she hadn't seen her mother in so long. The door finally opened and Elaine Brody smiled in delight at her heavily pregnant daughter.

"My Goodness, you're so big!" Elaine exclaimed.

Morgan rolled her eyes "Seriously? I haven't seen you in like, forever, and that's the first thing you say to me. Thanks mom" she said sarcastically.

"Oh, I'm sorry sweetie, but it's true!" Elaine laughed pulling her daughter into a tight hug "And it's a good thing, baby is doing well"

"Yeah, of course she is" Morgan smiled as they pulled apart "We have Greg taking great care of us"

"Oh, I just knew he would set you straight" Elaine teased as she shut the door and linked her daughter's arm.

"Was I really that much of a teen tearaway?" Morgan asked.

"No of course not, I'm only joking sweetie, you'll always be my little girl" Elaine said proudly, and Morgan smiled at her. "So, how are you feeling?" Elaine asked.

"Good, really good" Morgan said honestly "I'm getting a little uncomfortable now, but I know that means the baby is getting ready, and I just can't wait to meet her" she smiled and placed a hand on her stomach.

"Oh, me too" Elaine said happily "My first grandchild!"

Morgan smiled at her mother's eagerness "Greg has just been…so amazing throughout this whole thing and… I couldn't have done it without him. I tell everyone, he's already an awesome dad"

"I'm sure he is" Elaine smiled "And I'm sure you're already an amazing mom"

"I hope so" Morgan replied a little dejectedly.

"Hey…" Elaine stopped them walking and lifted her daughter's chin to make Morgan look at her "Don't you doubt for a second that you could ever do anything to let this baby down. You've grown into a strong, caring, intelligent woman, Morgan, perfect mother material. Motherly instinct comes naturally to every woman, and when the time comes, you'll know exactly what to do"

Morgan looked at her mother with tears welling her eyes "Thanks, mom" she said with a shaky voice and wrapped her arms tightly around her mother.

"You're welcome, sweetie" Elaine said rubbing Morgan's back "And don't you ever forget, me, Jerry and your father will all be there for you, whenever and wherever you need us, whatever you need" Morgan's grip tightened on her mother as tears began to slip down her face. Elaine heard her daughter sniffing "Aww, Morgan, don't cry" she coaxed, drawing Morgan back and brushing a strand of her hair out the way.

"I know, I'm sorry, it's my damn hormones" Morgan said with a light laugh as she wiped her eyes "It's just all getting so real now, you know?"

"I do know" Elaine nodded as they continued to walk again "Ask your father, I was exactly the same just before you were born. Everyone has the same worries, but there is really no need, trust me. Just wait until your baby girl clutches onto your finger for the first time. That's a feeling you'll never forget, and there will be many more moments of joy to come"

"Like…taking your daughter shopping?" Morgan asked teasingly and her mother laughed.

"Yes, just like that, and you'll be doing this with your own daughter someday" Elaine said.

"And I can't wait" Morgan said with a smile "Now, c'mon, today's on Greg" she said with a grin, waving her husband's credit card around.

Elaine laughed "Oh, I knew I'd raised you right"
