A/N: So sorry updates have been slow on this story, I find these chapters much harder to write than my one-shots for some reason. Anyway, we left at a dramatic climax, so I hope you enjoy this chapter ;) Oh, and thank you so much for reviewing as always!
Please Review :) xx
Chapter 21: Blessings
Morgan and her mother had finally arrived at the hospital, and Morgan's contractions were becoming more and more frequent. Morgan was given a private room and as the doctors and nurses prepared to deliver her daughter, the mother-to-be was displaying emotions of fear and concern in-between the sudden bouts of pain.
"Where's Greg?" she asked her motherly helplessly for what felt like the hundredth time in only the past five minutes.
"He said he was on his way" Elaine tried to reassure her daughter, as she stroked back Morgan's blond hair, and allowed Morgan to grip her hand so tightly it felt like each finger would soon break.
"H-he promised m-me" Morgan whimpered "H-he said he'd b-be here."
She was scared and felt alone even though her mother was by her side. Obviously, Morgan was very grateful for her mother being there, she was trying her best to keep Morgan calm and trying to assure her everything would be alright, but Morgan had always thought that this would be something she and Greg would go through together – this was their daughter.
Morgan didn't doubt that Greg was probably trying everything he could to get to the hospital – he said he wouldn't miss the birth of their child for anything in the world – but Morgan feared he would arrive too late, that she'd have to do this without him, and then Greg would never forgive himself. It wasn't Greg's fault, Morgan had insisted he should go to work, but she couldn't help feeling scared – she thought she'd have nothing to fear with Greg around, and yet, he wasn't there.
"Well then of course he will be here" Elaine said enveloping Morgan's hand in hers as a sign of comfort; she hated seeing her daughter so upset. "Greg is the best kind of man you could ever have married, he would never even dream of breaking a promise to you"
"I know, I know" Morgan said quietly, and Elaine smiled at the hint of love in her tone despite the situation.
"He'll be here soon" Elaine said "I just know it"
"But how soon? I don't know how much time is left" Morgan said as he placed a hand on her stomach "that's not really for me to decide" she said with a tired smile as she looked at the bump in the last few moments of it being there "Just hold on for daddy" she whispered.
"Mrs Sanders, you're all most ready for…" the doctor started but Morgan cut her off.
"My husband is coming" she said firmly "He's going to be here in a matter of minutes." She turned to look at her mother with a small smile "I know it too"
Elaine nodded back with a soft smile as she tried to keep her own emotions at bay. She silently prayed for her daughter and her grandchild, and she prayed her son-in-law would make it there in time.
Nick didn't remember seeing Greg this anxious since Grissom had found out it was actually the then lab tech who had let their boss' favourite tarantula. Back then, Greg had been quite naive to what real anxiety was as he was confined in his own protective bubble of the lab. Greg was eccentric, and liked to think he had no real worries in the world, but he had matured a lot since then, and now knew – with parental instinct- what the real worries were, and the first one was missing the birth of his own child.
If someone had told Greg ten years ago that not only would he marry Conrad Ecklie's daughter but also father his grandchild, the funky lab tech would have laughed in their face. But now, as Nick furiously drove them as fast as he could through the busy streets, Greg found the concept of being a father becoming too real, to the point where he'd successfully convinced himself he'd never have children, until he met Morgan.
That moment when Greg was told he was unlikely to ever conceive children seemed like a life time away, but it was a moment in his lifetime he now wished to forget. He had proved the stupid doctor wrong, he was going to be a father, and he was going to make it to the hospital in time and be there to hold Morgan's hand as she gave birth to their child.
"C'mon, c'mon" Nick seethed through gritted teeth as he slammed his palm against the horn.
Greg had been so caught up in his miscellaneous thoughts he didn't realise the sudden flood of traffic they seemed to be compacted in.
"No! We don't have time for this!" Greg exclaimed, his mind racing for a solution. "I promised Morgan I'd be there!"
"I'll get you there" Nick said sternly "That's a promise I'm making to you"
Greg gave his friend a smile of appreciation before sighing and closing his eyes for a moment to think. By the looks of it, the traffic was backed up for miles – they weren't going anywhere. Greg could only think of one other option.
"How far from the hospital do you think we are?" Greg asked.
"I dunno, only about a mile" Nick replied.
"A mile…" Greg repeated under his breath "I can run that" he concluded before going to open the door.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa" Nick pulled him back "Are you crazy! You'd kill yourself trying to run with that leg before we even reach the hospital" he warned out of concern.
"But I have to get there, Nick!" Greg retorted "and that's not going to happen if we're forced to just sit here. Hopefully I could run a mile in ten to twelve minutes, but I have to go now!"
Greg knew very well that running fast for so long with his leg and hip injured could easily cripple him again, but that was something he'd deal with later – he had to try everything to get to his wife and daughter, and for now he just hoped the adrenaline would be enough to keep him going.
"Fine" Nick conceded, not wanting to be the reason Greg was late. He managed to pull the car over into a side street.
"What are you doing?" Greg asked as Nick opened the door.
"Someone's got to carry you if you decide to collapse halfway" Nick said with a smirk and Greg smiled in thanks before the CSIs scrambled out of the car.
And then they were running. Greg was surprised how little his hip seemed to be bothering him, no doubt he'd pay for that later, but right now all that mattered to him was getting to the hospital and be with his wife as their daughter was born.
The odd muttering of 'excuse me' and 'sorry' were the only movement of Nick and Greg's lips as they focused on running and zigzagging through the crowds of people. Greg felt the universe was tormenting him somewhat- today of all days had to be the one were the streets were so busy.
Five minutes later and Greg was starting to feel the strain a bit more; a sharp pain was radiating up and down his leg every now and again, but it was not enough to deter him – nothing could at this rate. Besides, he knew Morgan must be going through something a thousand times worse.
Nick was keeping a very close eye on his friend, ready to catch him at any moment. He could see the slight flashes of pain in Greg's face as the younger man winced every so often, but Greg seemed the most determined Nick had ever seen him, and the older man felt a great sense of pride for his friend.
The pace was dropping a little as the CSIs rounded the penultimate bend, both Nick and Greg were breathing heavily, and Greg was beginning to wobble around a lot more. When they finally reached the hospital entrance, both men could have laughed with joy, but they didn't even slow down before Greg went charging to the reception desk.
"Morgan…Sanders" was all he could breathe to the receptionist before she gave him a worried look and started tapping away on her computer.
"Room 103" she informed him, and Greg gave her a nod of acknowledgement before he and Nick started running down the hall once more.
Eventually, they skidded to a halt outside the room and Nick placed a hand on Greg's shoulder.
"Good….luck" he breathed.
"Thanks" Greg said with a small smile before hobbling into the room.
Morgan had been crying for a whole different reason before Greg entered the room. She was just about to lose hope, but then Greg appeared at the right moment, like he always did, looking a bit worse for wear, but smiling all the same.
"I'm so sorry I'm late" he breathed before rushing to Morgan's side and taking her hand. Elaine smiled and patted Greg's back before leaving them for some privacy.
"It doesn't matter, you made it, that's what's important" Morgan said with a small smile.
"Well, I never break a promise" Greg said with a smile "and it looks like you're doing great" he said reassuringly as he stroked Morgan's hair back. "I'm so proud of you, and I love you"
"Thanks, I love you too" Morgan said with a small smile of her own.
"Ah, Mr Sanders" the doctor said as she re-entered the room "You're just in time"
"Good" Greg said squeezing Morgan's hand "Let's have a baby"
Cuteness was something Greg would often reserve for puppies of kittens. His daughter was not just cute, she was far more than that; she was beautiful. She looked so much like Morgan already it was unbelievable, with her wisps of blond hair, fair complexion, and little dimples. However, she had Greg's eyes; those glinting, mischievous brown orbs that the parents could already tell would lead to stardom.
Morgan was resting for the moment, and so Greg had taken to sitting by their little girl's crib and watching her sleep with love and protection. Both her tiny fists were laid by her head, and Greg still struggled to believe that such a tiny being could be a part of him and Morgan, but she was, and she was perfect.
Greg was so proud of Morgan during the birth, she'd keep clam and everything was alright. As soon as the baby started crying, she was handed to Morgan, and the new mother had never cried such tears of joy in her life – Greg himself found it hard not to get too emotional.
After that, Morgan had been quite exhausted, and fell asleep just after their daughter was taken for some minor tests, but everything was okay. Both patents had found themselves suffering from separation anxiety already, but in the end they had nothing to fear. Being a parent would bring many anxieties over the years, but as long as Greg and Morgan remained side by side, they'd always know what to do.
Eventually, the baby began to stir, and Greg took her into his arms, giving the odd 'ssh' and rocking her gently. Morgan began to wake too, her mothers' hearing already setting in.
"She's going back to sleep" Greg told her with a soft smile.
"I still can't believe it" Morgan said as Greg sat on the edge of the bed with their daughter – Morgan thought he was a natural at holding her already.
"I know, but here she is" Greg said smiling down at the baby in his arms.
"She's ours" Morgan said proudly.
"Forever and always" Greg said giving his wife a soft peck on the forehead. "Mummy and daddy will always love you" he said to their daughter.
"She's going to be famous, I can tell" Morgan smiled "An actress maybe, or a singer"
Greg chuckled "Then we better hope she has your voice"
Morgan smirked at him "Well one thing I know is, one day, everyone will know her name. Everyone will know the name, Heidi Lydia Sanders"
Phew! Thank you so much for sending in your name suggestions it took me ages to choose XD But, thank you to CSISzmanda for suggesting 'Heidi' and Denton1122 for suggesting 'Lydia'. Two very adorable names! :) I feel the next chapter will be the last just to see how they get on at home, so until then!
