Epilogue: At Home
The following morning the Sanders family headed home, and Greg and Morgan spent most of the time just watching their daughter sleep. There was still something which felt so unreal about the situation, yet when Heidi woke up at about midday and smiled at her parents for the first time, both Greg and Morgan smiled back, and they had never felt more complete.
"She's so beautiful" Morgan cooed as Heidi reached out her tiny hand and took a firm grip on her mother's little finger.
"Yep, she's a charmer" Greg said as he placed an arm around Morgan's shoulders.
"All the boys are gunna fall for her" Morgan teased.
Greg's eyebrows rose "They have to get through me first, besides, no dating til she's eighteen." he laughed when Morgan gave him a nudge.
"Daddy's just kidding" Morgan said to their daughter who was already yawning, ready for more sleep "Mommy will be the sane parent and keep him in check"
"Yes…kidding" Greg mumbled, but then he smiled at his daughter "It's only because daddy loves you very much"
"And mommy does too" Morgan added, just before Heidi once more fell asleep.
It was a long day consisting of people coming and going, bringing gifts and fussing over the little bundle who slept obliviously to the excitement for most of the day. Greg's parents had come over from California and Morgan's step-father too. Even Ecklie smiled broader than Greg or Morgan had ever seen as he rocked his granddaughter in his lap.
"I'm your Grandpa" he'd said proudly. "And I'm going to spoil you rotten. I wasn't always there for your mommy when she was younger, but I'm making up for it now, and I promise I'll always be there for you"
"We'll hold you to that" Morgan said with a smile as she and her father hugged, and Heidi slept on soundly.
Sara and Finn wanted a hold too, and although Nick had been reluctant at first from fear he'd drop Heidi, Greg said they'd take it as an offence if he didn't hold her.
"Well, we can't have that can we" Nick smiled as he took Heidi in his arms. The little girl was awake and gurgled at him as she waved her small arms around.
"See, she loves her Uncle Nick already" Greg smiled "Nothing to worry about"
By the evening, both Greg and Morgan were exhausted, and it appeared so was Heidi, even though she'd been sleeping most of the day. As Morgan went to feed Heidi before she went to bed, Greg went into their daughter's new room and prepared her cot.
There were teddies and blankets everywhere, all gifts for the baby Greg was told was never going to exist because of him. How wrong that doctor had been; he now had his beautiful baby girl to love and cherish, and who knew, maybe they would have another miracle one day.
Morgan carried Heidi back into the room after feeding her, and the little girl was now in her pink onesie.
"All ready for bed?" Greg asked with a smile as he took his daughter to give her a hug before settling her down. "You've had a busy day. You have a huge family and they were all excited to meet you"
"But now mommy and daddy need to sleep too" Morgan said tiredly as Greg put Heidi in her cot. "Although I doubt you're gunna let that happen for long" she teased.
"It's all part of being a parent" Greg reminded her before giving Heidi a soft kiss on the top of her light blonde hair "good night, I love you"
"I love you too" Morgan said as she leaned in to kiss their daughter aswell.
Greg and Morgan stood watching her for a while longer, with their arms wrapped around each other and Morgan's head resting on Greg's chest.
"My mom was right, I already feel like I know what to do" Morgan said "Heidi is my daughter, and I am her mother, and I know how to take care of her"
"Of course you do" Greg said giving his wife's shoulder a squeeze "You are an amazing mom already, one day down, eighteen more years to go" he said with a smile.
Morgan laughed lightly "Yeah and you are an amazing dad too"
Greg smiled down at her. "Thank you" he said and placed a soft kiss on her lips.
"C'mon, we should go to bed" Morgan said "because we're going to have to get up a lot"
The couple trudged hand in hand back to their room and snuggled up together under the warm covers. Just as Greg and Morgan closed their eyes, a sharp piercing cry erupted from down the hall. Greg groaned and Morgan sighed.
"You go" they said at the same time.
"I just fed her" Morgan pointed out.
"Fine" Greg conceded, but he got out of bed with a small smile on his face; he was happy to do it really.
