I'll Be Waiting

He felt weightless, as if he were being carried. The tips of his fingers dragging along a rocky surface, his head bobbing with each step the person carrying him took. He felt exhausted, barely able to crack his lids against the unbearable sun.

Where was he?

Dark strands swayed above him, obscuring the face of whoever was carrying him. His hand reached up, clasping the ends, dark eyes widening at the firm, fleshy hand. Was this his hand? The dark tresses coiled within his pale hand, inclining his head as he brought the wispy strands to his nose. Inhaling lightly, his shoulders slackened.

It wasn't her.

Releasing his hold, all hope he held evaporating.

"Were you hoping I was someone else? A lover perhaps?" His scowl deepened, eyes narrowing at the voice mocking him. He hadn't heard that voice since he was human. That voice, he loathed more than anything, the reason he was what he was today. The reason he could never love Sakura the way a man loved a woman.

"Why are you here?" He struggled to be released, shoving the arms holding him up.

"Is that any way to greet your older brother Sasuke-kun," Itachi released the squirming boy. "I've looked after you up until this point and this is the thanks I receive?"

"Look after me? You left me out here to die! I did die; Okaa-san and To-san…you all abandoned me. I—" His voice died down as the blood drained from his face. This was the checkpoint that led to the other side. Why was his brother here? His gaze wavered, his confusion evident to the elder Uchiha.

"I died not too long after," Itachi's hand felt as if it were weighing down his shoulder. "A life for a life. In order for you to remain among the world of the living, I sacrificed myself. You were merely a child, you deserved a life—"

"As a spirit?!" Sasuke slapped away his hand, teeth gritting as dark eyes shifted to the perfectly poised man before him. "Did I not have a choice in my own fate?" He felt the tears building up, trying to keep them at bay as he grasped the front of Itachi's parka, drawing the man in. "What was my purpose in dying?" Itachi met the eyes of his younger brother as if seeing him for the first time.

The man before him was nothing more than a child still, the same toddler he had left so long ago. Even though Sasuke had grown physically, his eyes betrayed the stoic persona he tried to implicate. "Answer me dammit!" Tears streamed down his flushed cheeks as he shook the older man.

"Crying is not becoming of you Sasuke," His knees buckled as his brother enveloped him in a tight embrace. "This was the only way I could protect you. He…I knew he would seek you out. I had no choice but to leave you." Sasuke's shoulders racked as he openly bawled against the man he had gone so long hating. Itachi had been suffering the same fate as he had. He always thought his elder brother had left him because his family no longer wanted him. He wanted to still hate Itachi, ridicule the older sibling for not letting him decide how his life would end but he couldn't. Sasuke could only grasp the light jacket tighter, seeking comfort from the only family he ever knew.

"Come now Sasuke, there's much I have to explain to you." He began steering them in the direction of the large brass gates of the other world, stumbling slightly as Sasuke suddenly pushed against him.

"I always imagined what I would feel when I finally crossed over. Would I be relieved? Or would I be angry with whoever put me in this predicament? Either way I would have accepted my fate regardless. Spirits were never meant to dwell among the living," Red rimmed eyes leveled with barren dark irises, a timid smile replacing the ever present scowl. "Then I met her. I fell…I'm in love with her, that baka. I've claimed her Itachi. I can't leave my mate." A light flush dusted his pale cheeks, turning from him.

"Sasuke,"

"Just tell me how to get back to her."

Sakura felt her legs give way; sweat dripping from her brow as she supported herself against the base of a tree. The spirits inhabiting the forest began turning against her once word got out that Sasuke was no longer among them, forcing her to flee. Her tattered kimono suffered the worst of the spirits retaliation, clinging to her limbs by threads. Tears brimmed the corners of her eyes as she pushed from the tree. If Sasuke were still around he would have protected her.

Why had she been so selfish? If it weren't for her brash feelings he still would have been here with her, loving her. Vision blurred, Sakura ran head first into a mass of muscles, throwing her off balance.

"You're the young human causing the commotion among my spirits," Wide eyes lifted to the man attached to the voice, fear captivating her. The man before her held an unpleasant aura, the smirk lining his mouth heinous as an ashen hand stretching out in her direction.

"Come child, I mean you no harm." Even as he said that, his shifting eyes danced over her as if he knew something she didn't. He reminded her of a snake; he couldn't be trusted.

"Who are you?" Ignoring the outstretched hand, she pushed herself up. The man before her wasn't like any of the other spirits she had encountered. He could be touched and in return touch others without fading. "Who I am is neither here nor there. It isn't of your concern, rather, how I can help you,"

"How you can help me? What are you saying?" His lips curved as he headed in the opposite direction she had been trekking, leaving her no choice but to trail after him into the heart of the forest.

"Do you wish to see Sasuke again? There is a way to bring him back, that is—"

"How?!" Her hands grasped his arm, tears streaking her dirty face. "Please, bring me back my Sasuke-kun." Her head lowered, unaware of the sinful smirk widening along his mouth. His fingers wove within her salmon tresses as if he were comforting her, drawing her face up to his. Those snake like eyes drank in her appearance, not letting her look away as he slowly drew her in, captivating her.

"Are you willing to die for the man you love?" His thumb smeared over her lower lip, taking in her once vibrant viridian eyes glazing over. The extraction of her soul from her body had begun unbeknownst to her, a tedious process that would take the full submission of the vessel in order to complete. The child had been far too easy to sway in his favor, almost as easy as the Uchiha brothers had been.

He had been taking the bodies of wayward human children as long as he could remember to sustain his own life. Transferring his own soul from one body to the next, he found the answer to a life without death, killing innocent children and forcing them to remain within the forest he had created. Many of the spirit feared him, heading the Forest God whenever he made his presence known.

"Sasuke-kun…bring him back…to me," Her heavy lidded hollow eyes shifted to a dull hue as the color drained from her face. "I love him…I'll do anything..." His hand grasped her jaw roughly, angling her mouth just an inch from his own.

"Relinquish your ties of your body child," It were as if he was sucking the life from her, the firm flesh of her hands becoming transparent, the filmy flesh glittering against the sun. "Give me your body." Her hold on him slackened, her vision darkening. The short visible fangs enlarged as his skin darkened, scales growing over the ghostly flesh. His face taking on a different shape, morphing into the snake she knew he was. That infuriating repulsive smirk was the last thing she saw before collapsing.

"Where are we?" Sasuke felt the vibrations from his echo, staring into the darkness that lay ahead.

"This is the heart of the forest," Itachi faltered a short distance from his brother. "The Forest God must have found a new vessel, the process has begun."

"Vessel? What process?" Sasuke inclined his head in Itachi's direction, his brows drawn together. The elder Uchiha felt an oncoming migraine forming at the base of his skull, pinching the bridge of his nose. He knew the information he was about to relay would break his brother; the boy always did have a weak heart.

"Your human," He eyed his stoic brother, feeling as if he already knew what he was going to say. "The woman you love shall be his next vessel. As I say this, she is becoming one of us." Sasuke's mouth slackened as he fell to his knees. He felt empty; the steady beat of his heart ringing in his ears.

Sakura was dying?

He barely felt his brothers comforting hand, trying to piece together this new information. Sakura couldn't have been in danger. He made sure to keep her out of harm's way, not even discussing the Forest God in depths with her.

"This isn't the time for self-pity, you must save her," Sasuke's head rose to the owner of the voice, his forehead aligned with Itachi's. "If this is love you must hang onto it." The younger Uchiha nodded meekly as if he were being scolded. A small smile curved his thin lips, grasping the back of Sasuke's head as he took one last parting look at his younger brother. He really had grown now that he thought about it. The old Sasuke would have fought him tooth and nail for what he put him through, being that he was short-tempered, but this Sasuke…was mature, level headed.

Someone that didn't need the protection of his older brother.

"If you leave now you should be able to reach her in time before she's completely lost."

Short chapter I know and yes yes yes Candles in the Sun is getting updated next. Long overdue, don't rip my head off. I hope you enjoy the chapter
