Ch. 18 Broken Wings
In the blink of an eye
All I believe became a lie
I need you like the air I breathe
But your love is out of reach
Out of reach
If this is where our story ends
Won't you show me how do I begin
I know that I will love again
I will I can through till then
It's time my only friend
~Broken Wings by Nikki Flores
I'd seen war movies before but they'd never scared me as much as the scene going on in front of me. I know that Angels and Dark Angels are much stronger than humans so therefore their fights would be much more brutal – hence Cody and Scourge's fight what felt like forever ago. Yet, this war was worse. I knew what to expect from the evil Dark Angels but even the Angels were showing no mercy. Each one killed without a second thought or a prayer for the lost soul. Did they even consider that the enemy was once the mortals that they swore to protect? I felt Scourge grab my arm and tug me back with force. Just as I fell into his chest, I looked to see a golden arrow right where I was once standing. We both looked up to see Annabelle holding a white and gold bow and arrow with sharp gold arrows. Shit, she must think I'm fully on their side now. I had to find some way to show her that I wasn't. Not now but maybe when I get back into contact with Cody.
Annabelle glared behind me to Scourge. My boyfriend threw me behind him just as he put his hand out. A glowing purple flame flew out at her with rapid speed and hit her in her wing. She gasped in pain before growling. She aimed her arrow at us again but since she was starting to fall from her balance, she shot one of the Dark Angel kids straight between the eyes. A sinister grin went upon her face, causing me to shudder. Annabelle then started to shoot at all the Dark Angel children who were merely running for cover as their parents directed them. I thought of Roxy and almost attacked Annabelle. The little girl was still in here somewhere and I would be even more damned than I was if I let something happen to her. I tried to move but Scourge blocked me, sending me a mental message to stay behind him before I got myself destroyed. Scourge once again starting shooting at the angels with those purple balls of fire. Most of them hit their wings and had the angels fall to their death while others hit the angels square in their chest. Their beautiful screams rang in their ears as they slowly starting to disintegrate from the fire.
"Scourge," I whimpered, not liking what I was seeing him do. His eyes were cold, hard, and had almost no emotion but rage in them. He may be a killer but he was my killer now and as long as I was present then he wasn't going to do this. Before I could try to talk to him, he scooped me up into his arms and spread out his wings. In the very next second, we were flying through the window. Glass cut both of us and I swore some went into my skin. Not a good feeling even when you're immortal. The battle started to fade into the distance as Scourge flew as fast as he could. "Scourge, wait, what about Roxy?"
"She'll be safe. I promise," he said, not even sparing a glance down at me. I wanted to take his word for it but I couldn't. No one in that battle scene could ever have a 100 percent chance of surviving. Especially not those children. Half of them died trying to get away. They weren't fighting. They were easy prey to tick off the other Dark Angels and really enrage them.
"And if she dies?"
"She won't," Scourge replied, his voice hard. "I already assigned Dante to watch her. Lucifer told us the Angels might attack so I made sure the little brat was taken care of. I know how much she means to you."
"You do," I asked, looking up at him with a raised eyebrow. He didn't answer me this time, his eyes too busy looking down at the beautiful ground below us. I saw that we had to be somewhere tropical since it did start to get hot as we dipped lower and lower to the ground. "Where are we going?"
"I can't tell you."
"Why?"
"I don't want Angel Boy disturbing us."
"What are you talking about? I have no way to contact Cody."
"And how do I know that?"
"We're bonded now, remember? We can hear each other's thoughts and shit, right?"
"I can hear your thoughts but you can't read mine unless I let you."
"How? That's not the way it's supposed to be!"
"Because I'm older than you. I know how to beat around the bush."
"But can't you still tell that I have no way to get to him?"
"I can but that doesn't mean I can trust you with important information such as our location."
"Oh so you don't trust me anymore," I asked, feeling a bit hurt. I was surprised at the sudden rip in my chest at the thought of that. No matter what I had done during these past couple months, I had still fallen for Scourge. Yea, I may have done things for the good of mankind but putting aside my feelings for him was only temporary. Didn't he know that I still loved him more than I'd loved anything else before?
"You'll earn it back eventually," he said simply before we landed on the ground. I looked out to see a beautiful beach on my right and a huge beach house on my left. Before I had time to really take in my surroundings, Scourge grabbed my arm and dragged me to the house. I wanted to tell him that I was sorry about all that I did to him but I doubt that would do anything except make him angrier. It was just best to keep my mouth shut for the moment. I slowly shrugged off my hurt feelings as we entered the house. "There's a bathroom upstairs. The door is the first one on your right after you get off the stair case. You should get cleaned up, we have some plans later." I nodded and followed his directions up to the bathroom.
The room was luxurious and big but it didn't make much difference to me. As much as I wanted to just take a nice hot bath and relax, I had too much on my mind. I settled under the hot water from the shower and tried to soothe my tight muscles. One thing I wanted to know was where the hell Scourge had taken me. I could definitely close it down to somewhere tropical and hot but that could still be anywhere. In the mortal world or the underworld. Hell already proved to not be what mortals thought it was. Who knows how the rest of it expanded to be. Besides, the lone thought of knowing that Scourge could have taken me anywhere in the world was not a good thought. We'd both lost each other's during this whole war talk which means that there's a high chance he could hurt me if he really wanted to. Honestly, I didn't really believe that he cared much about me anymore. He could do what he wanted and not have any remorse. That might be what scared me the most. I could be in so much danger. I had to contact Cody soon. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. Either that or I had to get out of here. No, contact Cody first. Although I hadn't seen him at the battle, which means he was somewhat out of harm's way, I still wanted to make sure he was alright. If he got hurt, then I don't know what I would do. He was my best friend and we swore to protect each other no matter what. And I've tried really hard with this whole Dark Angel thing to make sure he came out on top yet I could only hope that it worked.
I opened my eyes when I felt the hot water stop. The first thing I saw was Scourge staring at my naked body. He was holding a towel but he didn't seem like he was going to give it to me any time soon. His hair was damp which told me that he had probably taken a shower himself. He was also in a new outfit. A fitted gray v neck tee and a pair of ripped black jeans with some sneakers. A causal teenage boy outfit. But just because he looked hot didn't stop me from getting angry with him. I covered my exposed body as I glared at him. "You've been in here for over an hour," he said, finally looking up into my eyes.
"That doesn't mean that you have to barge in her and end my shower for me!" He ignored my little outburst and continued to talk.
"You told me earlier to remember that I can hear your thoughts. Well you should keep that in mind. If you want to keep thinking about that little piece of shit then I'll make sure that I'll have him killed slowly and painfully."
"You wouldn't."
"I would." He held out the towel to me. I snatched it from his hand and started to wrap it around myself. "I'm giving you ten minutes to get dressed. If not then I'm coming in after you and I'm damn sure you won't like it if I do." I continued to glare at him as he walked out the room. Stupid asshole. Reluctantly, I stepped out the shower and got dressed in the tight black crop top and black mini skirt that he left out for me. I combed my new curls into waves quickly for the last minute since I had taken my time getting dry. I hadn't taken his threat seriously at first but then I rethought myself and did what I was told.
I walked out the bathroom to see Scourge leaning against the wall, staring down at his wristwatch. He looked up at me as I approached him. "Right on time. I was just about to come in and take care of you myself."
"Well there's no need now is there?"
"Seems not." We stared at each other for a moment, the tension in the air very thick. I don't know what he was thinking but I'm sure that he was scheming or something. His facial expression gave nothing off which made it a bit hard for me to keep looking at him. Sometimes emotionless faces can get a little creepy.
"So what plans do we have that you practically ruined my shower for?" He held out his hands to me causing me to raise an eyebrow. What the hell? Cautiously, I put my hands in his and let him pull me closer.
"Later on tonight we have to meet with one of the ancient Dark Angels. She's an older woman but she can talk and do things fairly well. Lucifer chose to turn her because of her access to the spirit world and her ability to do things of supernatural when she was a mere mortal. She was some information that we need."
"What kind of information?"
"Information such as if you really love me or not?"
"And if you really love me or not."
"I love you, Rosalinda. Don't even try to play that card."
"Oh yea so you can torture me and turn me into a monster but still love me yet when I try to do right just once, suddenly I'm out of love with you? Yes because that makes perfect sense."
"You betrayed me. We talked before about how Victoria-"
"I am not Victoria, Scourge. I may look like her and I may have done the same thing she did but I'm not going to stop loving you. If I do then it's because you've finally done something so fucked up that I can't even bear to be near you. Victoria left you for Cody, and I understand that."
"I bet you would since you're so close to doing the same exact thing."
"I love Cody, Scourge. I do. But I refuse to be a whore like every other girl who gets herself stuck in some stupid love triangle. If I wanted to be with Cody then I would have done so. But I'm not. I'm with you, Scourge. Why can't you understand that?"
"Because I can feel how strong your emotions are towards him. You love him more than you love me."
"Scourge," I reached out to touch him since he gently pushed me away as he said the last part. He moved away from my hand, letting out a sigh.
"I really don't want to talk about this right now. Alright?"
"Okay well just know that I do love you. Believe me when I say that." He lifted his ice blue eyes from the floor and stared at me carefully.
"When you prove it, I will," he said before stalking off down the hall.

Later that night, Scourge and I found ourselves driving down a dark road. There were no other cars out here. Only the seagulls and the soft sound of the breeze. A part of me felt relaxed by the emptiness but another part of me longed for some type of human communication. Anything really. Something that would remind me of the life I used to have. The carefree one. No wars, no being turned immortal, and no boyfriend problems. But we can't all have it the easy way, now can we?
Scourge and I haven't spoken since our little argument earlier which bugged the hell out of me. Especially since we ended up spending the rest of our free time together. We watched TV, played video games, hell we even cuddled for a little while but yet never talked. We sure are one weird ass couple. I still felt a bit hurt at his lost trust in me and the fact that he no longer thought I loved him. Although I could understand both of his reason for those things, I still wished that I could do something to change them.
I was bounced out of my thoughts when I felt the car jolt to a stop. I looked up to see an old cottage house with smoke coming from the chimney. Well at least it looked cozy and unthreatening. We both hopped out the car and walked to the door together. Scourge knocked while I looked around. There was nothing but gardens and trees around the house. However this woman lived, she must do it off of isolation and crops. Oh and her witchcraft or whatever it is that she does. The door was opened by a small older woman, as Scourge had mentioned before, who had long healthy gray hair, deeply tanned skin, dark brown but soft brown eyes and an odd aura. She immediately bowed when she saw Scourge. It was ironic since usually it's the younger people who bow down to the ones older than them. Then again, Scourge only had the young body. His soul was probably a lot older than hers.
"Great one," she said, her speech clear and not cracked.
"Gran bruja," Scourge replied, doing a small nod. "It is nice to see you again."
"You as well." She turned to me. "Who is this, dear?"
"This is Rosalinda. My bonded mate."
"Hmm, she looks familiar."
"She is Victoria's doppelganger. She is one of us now."
"Ahh, so she is the secret weapon Lucifer was speaking off. The final piece to the prophecy."
"Prophecy? What prophecy," I asked. The woman smiled and beckoned us to come inside.
"Come great ones, I have tea prepared. We shall sit and talk, yes." Scourge let me walk in first, the strong aroma of cinnamon and vanilla candles hitting my nose. I let out a small sneeze before I felt Scourge's hand on my back. He led me to the small living room where a small auburn kitten was sitting on the couch. Scourge and I sat beside it. Instantly, the cat turned it's attention away from the yarn ball it was pawing at and turned to us. It climbed onto my lap to Scourge's where it purred and rubbed against his stomach. He smirked and started to pet it. I raised an eyebrow when he started to coo and talk to it. "Aw, I see Chee has taken a liking to you," the woman said as she walked in with a tray that had three tea cups and a bowl of sugar cubes on it.
"Yea," Scourge replied, keeping most of his attention on the small animal. The gentleness and care that he put with the kitten reminded me of the way he was to me when we first met. It won't be long before he starts throwing it around and toying with its emotions. Scourge's head shot up as that thought crossed my mind. He shot me a disapproving look before returning to playing with the cat.
"You are hurt," the woman said, looking at me with pity in her eyes. I faked a small smile.
"It hasn't been an easy ride."
"Yes. Journeys are quite difficult things to experience, now isn't it?"
"Yea. Very," I murmured. The kitten jumped out of Scourge's lap and walked over to its owner. I grabbed one of the tea cups and put four sugar cubes in it. I found it entertaining to watch them dissolve into the hot drink. I recognized the tea immediately after taking a sip. Apple Cinnamon. Auntie used to make it all the time in the winter. Auntie…
"So, Chika, can you help me with her mind," Scourge asked the woman. Chika was still staring at her, her deep brown eyes starting to turn to a light caramel.
"My mind is fine," I halfway growled. Scourge ignored me, keeping his eyes on the witch.
"The girl is damaged, Scourge. Very, very damaged. You need to be patient with her. I see a lot of pain in her soul. She has lost many people and she can't afford to lose anymore. Especially not…" Chika trailed off, leaning forward so that she could look deeper into my eyes. What the hell was she doing and how?
"Especially not who," Scourge asked, his voice hard.
"You. Especially not you. She depends on you. She trusts you. She loves you. The only thing she asks in return is for you to feel the same way."
"And what about the other boy she cares so much about?"
"Ah, she loves him as well. It is strong as well. She is torn between right and wrong. She knows what she has to do but she also knows what she wants to do."
"Which one do I apply to?"
"The wrong, of course. She thinks it is wrong to let us take over the world. She believes that it is those ruthless Angels who should be looking over mankind as they always have. But yet she contradicts herself. She wants to be with the one she truly loves and that can't happen unless she turns herself fully to our side."
"I would really appreciate it if you guys would stop talking as if I'm not sitting right here," I stepped in. I hated how well Chika was reading me. Her powers must be pretty great if she can see all the way into my mind and emotions. I couldn't be in awe though. My privacy was being invaded and it was not too good a feeling.
"Child, you should not be afraid of how you feel. Embrace what you want. What you should do no longer matters. You are one of us now. You are the new Princess of us all and soon will rule this world beside your mate. Either realize that now or you will never be able to live with yourself."
"What are you talking about? Embrace it?"
"Yes. If you want to become a full Dark Angel and release yourself to your true powers then you must embrace what you are. Just like how you embraced your uniqueness when you were mortal. Embrace it and you can achieve anything you want. Even things you didn't think you could ever do. I can help you make that decision if you would like. Embracing comes much easier with a great old witch's help."
"I wanna think about it." Scourge sighed beside me.
"We will come back tomorrow," he told her.
"I look forward to it," Chika said as a catlike smile came upon her face. Okay than. Scourge grabbed my hand and led me out the small house. Again we rode in silence back to the beach house. I tried my hardest not to think. I didn't want him in my thoughts right now. Hell, I didn't even want to think about my decision myself. It was all just too much for me to handle. I honestly did not want to embrace my dark side and become evil but what if it would be better if I did? No, because then I could hurt Cody. I could hurt other people. That was not something I wanted was it?
"You alright," Scourge asked as I was brushing my hair later on. We were getting ready to go to sleep and I was still a bit lost in what I wanted to do.
"Not really," I admitted. Scourge sighed and walked up behind me. He wrapped his muscular arms around my waist, holding me tight.
"Thinking about your decision?"
"Yes." He kissed my neck.
"Maybe you should sleep on it."
"Why?"
"So that you make the right decision."
"And what do you think the right decision is because I honestly don't know what to do. There are benefits and consequences to both of them."
"What I think doesn't matter." I turned in his arms to look up at him. His face held a concerned but caring expression as he stared back down at me.
"Yes it does. Technically you're still my boyfriend and I care about your opinion. I just want us to work. I know what I did and I understand that I hurt you by going behind your back. But what does that matter now, Scourge? I'm a Dark Angel and your bonded mate. Whatever I choose now doesn't affect the war. It affects our relationship. And that is something that I can't afford to screw up." Scourge sighed deeply, shaking his head at me.
"You really wanna know what I want you to do?"
"Yes. Please."
"I want you to," he whispered as he started to lean down towards me. I was surprised when he kissed me softly. Slowly, I started to kiss him back. Our lips moved in complete harmony for what seemed like the first time in ages. I had missed his sweet taste and the smooth feel of his lips. His hands traveled down my back and went underneath my shirt. He pulled away to kiss at my neck, trailing up to my ear. "I want you to embrace it."
"Embrace," I breathed out. His hands had entered into my shorts, now playing with my jewel. He was going to seduce me into doing what he wanted. Stupid asshole.
"Yes. Think of all the things we could do if you were just as powerful as me. We could take over this world. We can show our own people who to really bow down to." I let out a yelp as one of his fingers entered me. "You and me, Rosy. For eternity. Doesn't that sound good to you? I mean that is what you wanted, wasn't it?"
"Yea," I moaned. He pulled away from me and threw me onto the bed. I stared at him with wide eyes as he removed my shorts and panties. "Scourge," I whimpered.
"We are going to be an unstoppable couple, Rosy," he purred in my ear. "But first we have to get him out of the way."
"Him. Who's- ah!" He had entered me and started to pump furiously.
"Say you'll help me. Say we'll do it together," he murmured, his jagged breaths hitting my neck. Shit, I could barely say anything. Not with the way he was thrusting into me.
"Kill Cody," I got out, pulling his head up so that I could look at him. He went harder, causing me to scream.
"Yes Rosa. But don't worry, after you embrace it will be much easier to get the task done. Then your heart will be black like mine."
"But how will I love you?" He smirked and kissed my lips.
"A black heart can feel certain things such as love but none such as remorse or regret. It will be easy. Trust me."
"But he's-"
"You love me don't you," he said as he stopped thrusting. The look on his face told me that if I didn't tell him what he wanted to hear then he would make me. He knew how much I loved him and he was going to use it against me to get what he wanted. The only thing I could do was follow what my heart wanted and worry about the consequences later.
"Of course I do."
"More than you love him?" I opened my mouth but got no words out as he began to thrust again. Damn, I was almost there.
"I think so."
"Mmm, so what are you going to do?" He went harder and faster. Oh shit. This was so not good.
"Embrace," I murmured.
"Scream it. What are you going to do?"
"EMBRACE," I yelled as he started to go the fastest he's ever gone with me. My whole body felt like it wanted to explode in pleasure. I bit down on his shoulder to keep me from screaming bloody murder as my climax came upon me. Scourge lowered me back down on the bed since I had arched my back a little too high. He kissed me again but not lustfully. It was a soft, gentle kiss.
"I love you," he murmured.
"I love you too. You know that don't you?"
"Yea." He kissed me again. "I know you do." I felt my eyes start to flutter from my weariness.
"How do I embrace," I breathed out.
"You fall." Scourge kissed me again, leaving me to close my eyes back into the darkness. He told me to fall. I didn't understand what he meant at first before I then realized it. I had been holding on to the edge. Preventing the fall into the new creature I had become. I was holding on to my mortality. With a new leap of courage, I let go and welcomed the blackness into my heart.
I am so sorry for not updating this in so long. Been brain dead for this story for a little too long but now I've found my inspiration ^.^
