Claire, age 5:

"Blow out the candles!" Jackie Wilcox, Claire's best friend shrieked, laughing hysterically.

Claire Bennet blew four out of the five candles on her birthday cake. Before Claire could blow out the last, Jackie grabbed the candle of the cake and grinned.

"Jackie, don't play with fire," Noah Bennet, Claire's dad warned.

"Yeah, come on Jackie, put it back," Claire begged, frowning.

"Don't be such a baby, Claire," Jackie said, grinning.

Being the trouble-maker she was, Jackie ran over to Claire and pretended to jab her with her own birthday cake candle.

"That's enough Jackie," Noah said, his eyes glinting from horned rimmed glasses.

Jackie pretended not to hear, and burned Claire's hand with the candle. Claire shrieked in pain and Jackie backed away, realizing what she did. Claire held her hand, tears streaming down her face. Noah and Sandra rushed to Claire to help her, but by the time they were by her side, Claire had stopped crying in pain.

"My hand doesn't even hurt anymore," Claire said, obviously confused.

"Let me see," Sandra replied.

Claire held her hand out for Sandra to inspect, and sure enough, there wasn't even a mark from the burn Jackie had left.

"Maybe Claire imagined the pain because it looked like Jackie got her with the fire," Noah suggested shrugging slightly.

Claire nodded, but even as a five year old, she knew she'd been burned.
