Chapter 5
War!
20 years later... Underground

Sarah stood at her balcony and overlooked the sprawling Labyrinth. She had wished so hard that this day would never have to come yet it had, like an unstoppable force from which there was no escape. They had received word from the High King that the war had finally come. The Mages had attacked the peaceful kingdom of Anran and because their king was the High King's brother war had been declared in the Underground. Jareth would be leaving on the morrow. She stood there gripping the railing as she tried but failed to keep her tears from falling down her pale face. How am I going to survive the next two-hundred years without him? she asked herself as she sobbed silently.

She dreaded the coming dawn and wished that it would never show its painfully cheerful face. She had chosen to spend the night alone so that their children could spend this last night with their father, especially their youngest who, being only four years old, would be a grown man when his father returned from the war.

Jareth sat with his children, whom he would miss almost as much as much as his beloved wife, and talked and joked with them. Although he could understand Sarah's need to be alone, he wanted to join her, for he could feel her despondency, her dread, her sadness.

"Father, go to Mother" his nineteen year old son said, understanding the pain in his father's countenance. He looked at his eldest for reassurance then noticed the looks all his children were giving him. They seemed to know what he was feeling so before Jareth could protest they started motioning toward the door.

He breathlessly hastened out of the library to hunt down his wife. He found her in their chamber at the balcony, overlooking the Labyrinth. Walking silently behind her he wrapped his arms around waist, her pulling her body as close to his as possible.

"Sarah, I am going to miss you so much my love," he whispered against her neck. He drew in her scent and wondered how he was going to get through 200 years of war without her there beside him. He could only take this memory with him; her soft hair and warm body held snug against his loving arms.

She turned in his embrace. He held her tightly as she cried into his chest, "I'll miss you so much, Jareth."

He lifted her head and then captured her lips in a frenzied kiss. They dissolved their clothes as he took them to their bed. Their lovemaking had a sense of urgency to it that night as they allowed their passion full reign. When they came, it was to the call of each other's names.

They did not allow themselves to drift off to sleep until dawn was upon the horizon. Sarah slept for only a short time. Silently sliding out of bed, she magically donned a black thin silk gown and plush orange robe. She bent and picked up her husband's discarded amulet and with one last look at his sleeping form walked out of their chamber heading for the Great Hall where she knew her children awaited her.

"Mother?" her eldest daughter asked when she saw her mother's tear stained face.

"It's alright dear." She reassured her children.

"Is it ready?" asked another of her daughters, indicating her Father's amulet, which was clutched in her Mother's hand.

"Yes," Sarah whispered brokenly.

She tried to be strong for her children's sake but was finding it difficult. She was worried about her Mate. She and their children encircled the amulet with their touch and added as much of their own power to the amulet as they could. Sarah knew she had to do everything in her power to protect her beloved from any and all harm.

Daryan, the eldest, walked up to his mother and embraced her and his fourteen other siblings repeated the gesture one by one.

When they parted, she said, "I'm fine, really. Just over worried I guess." She looked down when Gyan, her youngest, began tugging on her skirt. Bending down to his level, she asked, "What is it, sweetheart?"

"Can we put one more spell on it, Momma?" the four-year old asked.

Curious as to what he was talking about she asked, "What kind of spell?"

He answered in a solemn voice, "A hologram spell, so that Father will remember us."

Sarah sensed Jareth's waking state and asked how long would the spell take. He took the amulet from his mother and then with the help of the rest of his siblings he composed the spell.

When it was done, he handed the amulet back to his mother, who pulled him to her and kissed him. "Thank you, love." She whispered. Then she turned and headed for the Throne Room.

Jareth awoke only to find himself alone in the massive bed. Where could she be? he asked himself. The king reluctantly pulled himself out of bed and dressed in his usual regal clothing of riding boots, tight leather breeches, flowing shirt and vest, but was startled when he found his amulet missing. He could not remember removing it the night before so he went in search of his wife, hoping she had it. He headed for the Throne Room and found all of his children standing around the royal chairs.

"Have any of you seen your mother?" he asked as he walked into the room. They parted to reveal Sarah sitting on her throne sobbing and clutching his amulet to her chest. The sight nearly broke his heart; he hated to see her cry. He quickly made his way to her and knelt down before her, before pulling her into his arms.

"Shhh, love," he said, trying to comfort his distraught queen. He knew she was taking his leaving harder than their children and wondered why. She knew he would survive and return to all of them in one piece.

"Sweetheart, beidh tú féin a bheith agat do na leanaí," (Sweetheart, you will not be alone, you have the children) he whispered into her ear in the ancient language.

"Tá a fhios agam, ach tá mé ag dul a chailleann tú an méid sin, mo ghrá," (I know, but I am going to miss you so much, my love,) she whispered back lovingly. Pulling back she said, "Jareth you're going to miss the children grow up."

He managed a grin and said in the ancient tongue, "Coinnigh dom beo i gcuid hearts, Sarah." (Keep me alive in their hearts, Sarah.)

Smiling back at him, she answered him, "Beidh mé mo Darling, beidh mé." (I will my darling, I will.) Then she leaned up and kissed him with all the passion she had within herself. Pulling back slightly she slipped the amulet over his head and whispered softly, pleadingly, "Ní bheidh Promise dom tú a bhaint seo roimh a fheiceann tú dom arís," (Promise me you will not remove this before you see me again) she finished, placing her left hand over his heart-her heart.

He looked deep into her eyes and then, taking the hand that lay over his heart, he brought it to his lips and kissed the faint scar on her palm, then whispered back "Gealltanas I," vowing he would do as she asked him to do.

"Why though?" he finally asked, curious as to why he had to promise something so simple.

Before his wife could say anything his second to the youngest daughter spoke up, "We've been adding as much of our own power to your amulet as we could for the past several days, and, if I may make an assumption, Mother has put a protection spell on it as well. She's worried about you."

Looking down into his queen's face, he murmured softly, "So that's why you do not want me to remove it." Sarah could only nod her head; she did not trust her voice at that moment. "Is breá liom tú, mo bhean lómhara, banríon mo, mo ghrá ach." (I love you, my precious wife, my queen, my only love.)

"I love you too," Sarah managed to squeak between sobs that racked her body.

Suddenly, the King remembered something. "Sarah, promise me you won't let anyone best you in the Labyrinth."

She gave him a quizzical glance and then a look of understanding crossed her face. Smiling she nodded, promising him that none would defeat their Labyrinth while he was away.
