I haven't really picked up on that Merlin fanfic have I? Nope. Huge writer's block on that fic. Every time I open it, I groan. Sorry 'bout that.
Anyway, here's a oneshot that makes up for it instead. :)
Uther Pendragon could purge all magic-users from the entire lands of Albion and beyond, but the one thing he can't take away is the people's imagination. Their stories, their fairytales, their legends. Legends of the Old Religion that were passed down from before the Great Purge, legends of the greatest magician in the world and of how no one greater would come after that.
And so all throughout the lands, the word grew. Some believed it, others semi-believed it. As it diffused further and further, it became a story of a foreign land. But many at the heart of Albion who still believed in the old days anxiously awaited the coming of Emrys.
A decade passed, and all hope was nearly lost. Some of the old men moved on before they could witness the miracle. Another several years past, and more men died. At the same time, a young man came to Camelot. A humble, simple man who took up residence with the court physician. Who just so happened to secure a position as the Prince's manservant.
A boy who would change the world.
But to those who angered against King Uther, those with magic, those who wanted these dark times to end… They prayed and they searched for the fabled Emrys and his great power. But he was never found. So they acted alone. They acted without their Emrys. And they failed. Always foiled by a little servant boy of the Prince.
It angered them so much. Some survived, some didn't. Some just hid behind the scenes and raged silently at the oppression being thrown upon them.
Then the storm lifted and the hurricane passed. The reign of Uther ended and it was that same servant boy that whispered into the new King's ear, telling him his stories, the stories of legends and myths and fairytales. The legend of Emrys and the truth of magic.
The thunder ceased and the lightning stopped. Emrys revealed himself and the world was shocked. Those who'd hid in the caves, waiting to come out, were completely angered. He was on the inside all along. He could have brought down the house of Pendragon ages ago. So they attack, but are thwarted every time. They seethe at the court advisor and demand to know why.
Patience.
Then a certain woman emerges from her hiding place and returns to the palace. She is greeted with hugs and smiles by the King and his new Queen. First, though, she gives the court advisor a decent slap before pulling him into a hug.
Millennia pass, and soon this becomes another fairytale, another story, another legend that's been mixed up, twisted and wronged. Still, a fairytale is a fairytale. Magic isn't impossible.
It's just a bit unlikely.
hehe - "Not impossible, just a bit unlikely." -The Tenth Doctor
