This is a fanfic about Bioshock 1 and 2. The main character is Hunter Johnson. Let's get into it :)
It was quite a ride I'd had through the whole issue of the 2020's so far, and it had only been going on for 3 years. I lost my job because of the pandemic, almost all of my immediate family had contracted the disease, including me, and all of us had survived, but were listed as those that were infected with it to this day despite us only having antibodies. And due to this, I couldn't find any in-person jobs anywhere, meaning I had to do long-distance jobs such as my dream job, game development.
And in this job, I had a lot of fun working on games with lesser-known developers on projects that were more arcade-style than the normal games that came every day. But despite that, while at this job, I could feel some kind of weird feeling... something that was eating away at me anytime I turned on my PC and I looked at the completed file of Bioshock on the screen.
"Ugh, maybe I just need to play it and get it off my mind," I groaned, but I didn't want to complain. After all, Bioshock 1 and 2 were a couple of my favorite games ever, especially with all the twists, puzzle solving, and, my favorite part, the fact that it didn't change everything super drastic between versions. That was my major turnoff from Bioshock Infinite, believe it or not.
Regardless, I clicked the icon twice and saw that something was very off. Instead of the intro cinematics playing, I saw what looked like the interior of a plane... and then, I gasped as a bright flash of light happened and, after that, I gasped as I then was inside of the seat of the plane at the start of the game!
"W-WHOA!" I shouted in shock, me hoping this was a dream... but no, I felt a powerful thud across the whole plane as well as seeing fire come from ahead in the cockpit! But then, I looked at my back and gawked at how I was the only one on the plane with a parachute! I then went to the side door of the plane, opened it up, and saw it was like the planes in the 70s, where they weren't pressurized! I then saw in the distance that we were getting close to the lighthouse. I didn't know what the hell was going on, but since I was terrified of heights and falling to my death, I jumped out of the plane and proceeded to fall towards the direction of the lighthouse in the distance, making sure that I let out the parachute closer to the water at about 100 feet off the ground, as we were only 500 feet off the ground as of now! Regardless, after I did this, the plane then crashed the rest of the way into the water and I felt my feet land on the bottom floor of the lighthouse on its banks.
"I just hope I can get home... my family is sure to worry if I'm not back at home, and they'd be freaking out if they found I'd been warped to a game world as dangerous as this!... Why the hell am I monologuing?!" I groaned in annoyance as I spoke before then going into the lighthouse and, not caring to see the giant statue of Andrew Ryan and going straight for the Bathysphere, making sure that the radio was there and me then testing something out. I took said radio and saw that I could alter the radio to be turned off whenever I wanted! That, and the fact that I could choose to talk into it or not by holding a button on the side.
It'd be better to do that than have to risk anyone speaking to me when I didn't want them to, especially Atlas himself. Regardless, I hit the switch in the bathysphere and we were then sent through the slideshow, which I'll admit, was actually pretty impressive.
"Greetings. I am Andrew Ryan. I have a question for you. Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his brow? No, says the man in Washington, it belongs to the poor. No! Says the man in the Vatican, it belongs to God! No, says the man in Moscow, it belongs to everyone! I rejected those answers. Instead, I chose something else. I chose the impossible. I chose... RAPTURE!" he said with pride as the slideshow ended and I got the look at the dilapidated underwater city... and I had to admit, seeing it up close and in person, and everything looking to be realistic instead of in-game graphics? It made it look so cool!
"A city where the scientist is not bound by laws, where the peddler is not bound by morals, where there are no such things as poor and rich... and with the sweat of your brow, Rapture can be your city as well," he said... it was just a shame that it was all his fault that Rapture became such a hellhole in the first place. He should've placed some special restrictions in place to have prevented people like Fontaine in the place at all. Just prevent criminals from coming in and you'd be golden! But nope.
I also saw a Big Daddy on the way through the city and that there were some sea life going around the tubes of the city and looking to be intrigued at the Big Daddy in question.
"What do ya mean I have to go down there?! The splicers are everywhere!" said the voice of the poor chap, Johnny. I then picked up the radio and listened in.
"There's a guest coming in, and I want you to greet 'em. And make it quick, the Splicers are, indeed, comin'," said Fontained in disguise as Atlas, who I will refer to as such until he felt like speaking as Fontained.
"How can you be so sure about that?"
"A Bathysphere is on its way down to the entry, that means we've got some company," Atlas said, me waiting patiently as the bathysphere then went into the entry area of Rapture and I saw the sight of the Spider Splicer getting up close to Johnny and me simply hoping to distract the splicer from hurting the poor guy.
"OI! OVER 'ERE!" I shouted at the Spider Splicer, which got the creepy and dangerous enemie to screech and try to attack me from the outside of the Bathysphere, giving Johnny enough time to prep his arm to be the Security Bullseye, which he threw at the Splicer. And good thing too, because she was very close to getting into the Bathysphere! Johnny then managed to open the door after the security drone came in and drove off the crazy lady.
"Would you kindly pick up that radio, boyo?" I heard Atlas ask, me speaking into it after.
"Uh, already did," I did... though, super problematic, it was involuntary!
"Okay, listen, Johnny and I are gonna help ya get out of here, but we need your help," Atlas said.
"And thanks, mate. If it weren't for you, I was gonna get gutted," Johnny said, me nodding as he handed me a wrench, which I smirked at.
"Name's Hunter. Mind explaining what in the hell I've gotten myself into?" I asked, him nodding.
"Well, I don't know what you were thinking of, but you arrived in Rapture, a paradise that was turned into a dump. We should get out of here before those Splicers come back for round two," Johnny said, me nodding as we then left towards the area we needed to get to, us needing to crawl through some debris before then attacking another Splicer with Johnny setting him on fire and me then rushing in and attacking while he was distracted. And then, Johnny looked at the door ahead of us and swore.
"Dammit! The door shorted out again! I don't have the guts to handle anymore Plasmids. Anymore and I'd probably lose me mind!... Maybe you can go up to the machine up there and get your first Plasmid?" he said, me then going to the area he mentioned and me seeing that there were actually two different options for taking the plasmids. Either injection or drinking... I chose drinking it. And when I did, I gasped as my body proceeded to get in a lot of pain! I felt my bones crackling as my body coursed with electricity! And Johnny then had to resort to grabbing me so I wouldn't fall over the edge, him simply laying me on the ground and giving me some help via some wet towels to put on my face.
"Urgh... that felt horrid..." I groaned as I then heard the voices of a couple Splicers, me seeing that Johnny had to grab my wrench to hold them off and that he managed to kill both of them... and by the time that I recovered, it was to Johnny rushing down the stairs as I heard some powerful stomps emerge from the other set of stairs. I finally came to when I heard the voice of the Little Sister.
"Look, Mister Bubbles! It's an angel! I can see the-" she was about to say before I then moved my head off the ground and placed my right hand against my head. "O-Oh my! H-He's not an angel..." she said, me looking at the duo and seeing that the Big Daddy looked ticked at me moving around the little girl... but I knew that, so long as I didn't make any sudden movements towards the Little Sister, I was safe from getting gutted by that nasty-looking drill.
"I feel like I got punched in the nuts... and then set on fire in my anus..." I admitted, which I could tell made the Little Sister giggle after, which I heard Johnny speak from below us.
"Um, you might wanna come down here and away from them right now, Hunter, mate! It's dangerous!" I heard Johnny say, who I ignored.
"Are you nice, mister?" the Little Sister asked, me nodding at her.
"I am, and I mean you no harm... y'know what? How about we stick together?" I asked, that making Mister Bubbles grab his drill and he looked like he would be ready to attack. "Easy, big boy, I'm not going to hurt a little girl. In fact, I'm scared of both of you right now," I said, that making him holster his drill, but he still kept all of his eyes on me in the process.
"Why are you scared of me?" the Little Sister asked.
"Little girls having eyes that glow yellow? It's not something that I'm used to seeing... like, imagine if you saw something you never did before, and then it started to speak to you with its voice having an audible echo, while being accompanied by... um... whatever he is," I said, Mister Bubbles groaning at me saying that.
"Oh, this is Mister Bubbles. He's my daddy," the little girl said, me smiling as I then slowly got off the ground and our group proceeded to go down the stairs and Johnny simply stayed out of the way as I went to the door and shocked it to life with just my handprint, which I made sure that the duo of girl and giant were not anywhere close by when I did so. When we did so, we then moved through the door and proceeded into the tube... and then, the worst part happened with the plane's nose slamming through the tube and leaving barely any room for us! But even worse, some of the glass's shrapnel attacked Mister Bubbles's mask and right in his neck! And when that happened, he stomped angrily, which resulted in some of the other glass in the tube cracking and he then got sucked into the hole mask-first!
"MISTER BUBBLES!" the Little Sister shouted as I then knew I had to save Johnny and her!
"I'll take care of her, mister Bubbles! I won't let anyone lay a finger on her!" I shouted, him groaning in pain as I then gently grabbed the little girl and she tried to fight my grip as we then rushed through the tube the rest of the way before then reaching the next bulkhead, which we managed to get inside JUST in time! If we were any slower, from what I saw from the water that came through slowly after it closed, we would've imploded from the water pressure!
"Let me go! Mister Bubbles! He needs me!" she shouted, me then holding her tight, but gently, before speaking to her.
"Mister Bubbles died to protect you, little one," I said, her then trying to fight me again, her trying to scream, but I held my hand over her mouth. "Easy! I'm not letting anyone hurt you, okay?... I'm going to try my best to protect you, just like Mister Bubbles... I am not going to do anything to you and won't let anyone else do that to you either..." I spoke with seriousness, which the Little Sister cried a bit, but stopped trying to fight me. "Okay, now I'm going to let you go. When I do, I want to know that I can trust you to not shout or run off. If we don't stick together, then you might be the next angel," I said, her nodding as I then released her and the little girl simply stood to the back of my right leg, which made Johnny look at me in shock.
"Wow... I never saw that before," he admitted.
"What do you mean?" I asked as we then proceeded to walk again, making sure to take out a couple Splicers in the process to protect the little girl we now had to defend.
"I mean that I didn't think I'd ever see a Little Sister trust anyone other than a Big Daddy... the only two I'd ever seen that could talk to them and get their trust were Suchong and Tanenbaum," he admitted. We then went to the next room and had to take out a man that was on fire from the elevators, me making sure that I could have me and the little girl go up one elevator together while the other one was occupied by Johnny.
"Listen, I need your help to get my family out of here. They're in a bathysphere in Neptune's Bounty... I know you don't trust us and that you may feel like the unluckiest person of all, but I can assure you, my family is counting on you," Atlas said in the radio as the elevator moved up the rafters, me patting the little girl so she didn't get spooked by the voice.
"W-Who was that?" she asked.
"I have no idea, but he sent Johnny to pick me up. And if not for him or me, then you would've joined Mister Bubbles in that pipe breaking apart... if that would've happened... oogh, I shouldn't have brought it up," I said to myself.
"W-What would've happened?" she asked.
"Your body would've imploded from the inside-out, as this whole place is roughly 800 feet under the ocean. It's a horrible sight to see, one that I don't want you to see," I said, her nodding at me and giving my leg a tight hug.
"Please... protect me, mister... what's your name?" she asked me.
"My name is Hunter Johnson... and what's your name?" I asked the Little Sister, her responding by looking to be about to speak before then thinking to herself.
"I... I don't remember..." she said, me sighing at that.
"It must be because of you being a Little Sister instead of being a normal girl," Johnny said as we then moved forward again and we saw that the woman was ahead of us and looking to be going crazy with the baby in the carriage. I proceeded to take her out peacefully with a single wrench swing to her head, then picking up the baby in the crib, it being a 45-caliber pistol.
"Why was she talking to that?" the little sister asked as I sighed.
"Because she went crazy. If they saw you, they wouldn't see a girl. They'd see you as nothing but something to kill," I said.
"T-Then why aren't you doing that?" she asked in fear.
"Because we aren't crazy," Johnny said for me as we then went into the next room, that being a room that had a few leaks around and it also had a very splendid look... too bad I had to zap some Splicers that were looting some bodies in the watery areas.
We then finally got to the hole in the wall of the bathrooms (good thing we didn't need to use them) and then found ourselves in the rafters of the theatre.
"Uh-oh, we have a bit of a problem, Atlas," Johnny said into his own radio and Atlas then spoke up shortly after we saw that, below us, there was another Little Sister that was singing to herself and poking an Adam needle in a dead body.
"Would you kindly put your weapons away?" Atlas asked, me then involuntarily doing so as we then looked down and I made sure that our own Little Sister got some extra balance by piggybacking me, which she was confused at when I did so.
"Wow... I feel so tall now," she smiled at that as Atlas then spoke.
"I saw on the video feed that you have a Little Sister on your side... those Little Sisters? They carry Adam, the genetic cogs that make the wheels of Rapture go round. Everyone wants it, everyone needs it, and the Little Sisters harvest leftovers from dead bodies, then eat the stuff themselves to produce more," Atlas described, which made our Little Sister look concerned as I looked at her with seriousness.
"Don't worry, you aren't in danger, he's just laying it on straight," I said as we then got to the bottom of the staircase and then, when we did, we saw that the Little Sister was in a lot more danger than in the original game. She was being surrounded by four different Splicers and they were being very silent!
"LITTLE SIS! LOOK OUT!" I shouted, which made the Little Sister look behind her and then she screamed, which made the Big Daddy jump down from above and then rushing the four, them proceeding to attack the Big Daddy with some strong weapons, one of which being a grenade launcher that blew a hole in the glass, which I then led our group behind cover as I then took the daring move of poking my head out... and it was just in time to see that three of the Splicers were dead, but the last one managed to deliver the final blow to the Big Daddy!
"Mister Bubbles! NO!" the Little Sister in front of us shouted in fear as I then aimed my pistol and sent a bullet right through the final Splicer's face, me then leading our group through the door and then into the room that she was in, where she looked at us in fear... but then, she changed her tune when she saw a fellow little girl among us.
"Huh?... What's g-going on?... Why are you joined by tall monsters, Jada?" the one sister asked, which made our Little Sister confused.
"My name is Jada?... And who are you?" our little girl asked.
"It's me, Masha," she said, me then being shocked, but I made sure nobody noticed. This little sister NEEDED to survive now, above all else!... Then again, she did look older than the other little girls, with her being about 14 instead of around 6-8.
"Masha? I think I can remember that name... I got hit on the head a few days ago... wait, that's why I can't remember anything about my name!" Jada gawked.
"Anyways, um, Masha... we're Jada's protection, since she lost her Mister Bubbles earlier. We can protect you like he would... do you trust us?" I asked, Masha looking at me and then coming over and then sticking her nose into my arm, her then sniffing my skin... but why?
"I can sniff that you just recently got a Plasmid... and you only have one. What about you?" Masha asked Johnny.
"I have three, and that's my limit. If I got anymore, I'd go crazy," Johnny admitted.
"Okay... I'm coming with you. But I still don't trust you," Masha admitted.
"It's okay, I don't know if I can trust anyone down here either," I admitted as we then finally moved out towards the final area, where we took out some more Splicers before reaching the large split in the path, us trying to go to the road that led to the Fisheries, but the gates immediately locked up and a siren blared all over.
"CRAP! It's a trap! Girls, get in between us," I said, them then huddling together right in between myself and Johnny, us then needing to attack the different Splicers that came in as Atlas then spoke on the radio.
"Hang on, boyos, I'll try to hack the system to open a path to the Medical Pavillion!" Atlas said, us needing to take out three different waves of Splicers before he got on the horn again. "Alright, go to the door that leads to the Pavillion and go through the bulkheads, now!" he shouted, me then leading our two little ladies to the area and us about to finally escape... and then we all got locked into a very tight, dark room.
"What's happening to us?!" Masha asked in fear.
"Damn, you're locked in! I'll try to override the locks on the bulkheads! Just sit tight!" Atlas said with concern as we then got some light as we saw a picture appear in front of us, which Masha then gasped at.
"Oh no! It's the big devil! Big bad devil!" Masha shouted in fear at seeing the face of Andrew Ryan, me protecting her as Andrew Ryan then spoke.
"Well, I thought I heard a Bathysphere arriving... so, which form of sorry government sent you down here, then? The CIA? Mother Russia? The church of Catholics?" Andrew asked into the radio, me then responding the absolute truth.
"Um, Microsoft Windows... And it's not really a government, it's more like a machine," I said into it.
"Hmph, never heard of it. But it doesn't really matter. I don't trust outsiders in my city, let alone ones that turn to Atlas's side. So do me a favor, all four of you. Die in hell," he said before a whole slew of Splicers then rushed to the bulletproof windows and wildly attacked them, which I could tell was scaring Masha and Jada completely, which I huddled with them before I heard the sounds of the bulkhead unlocking!
"GET THROUGH THE BULKHEADS RIGHT NOW! I'll lock them up shortly after!" Atlas shouted, us then going right for it and rushing through the bulkheads until we were in the starting room of the Medical Pavillion.
"Wait... I think... Mama Tanenbaum is close by! We need to find her! She'll know what to do!" Jada said happily.
"Okay, let's get to it," I smiled. Though, on the inside, I was shaking. I was in deep shit and I had to hope that this wasn't real at all... but given the intense feeling I had when I jumped from the plane and the fact that I could feel heat from Johnny's flames and felt metal from touching the wrench? I was concerned I may never be able to leave... but at the very least, I could try to leave Rapture, but not alone. Mark my words, I'd try to save every Little Sister I met and any normal people that I could find. Johnny was just the first, but then there was Tanenbaum and Julie Langford. I would certainly try my very hardest... but I also reminded myself that I was going to be going to a dilapidated hospital, which was my least favorite place to be in, no matter the situation!
But I had to get some gall in my system, since I needed to try my hardest to protect Masha and Jada until we met with Tanenbaum.
