Chapter 5

The team drove back to OSP and while Sam and Kensi waited at their desks, Callen updated Hetty with the latest report on the case. Deeks was on the phone to his buddies at LAPD.

"Okay, thanks Bryan. Yep, let me know of anything else you can dig up? Thanks, for sure we'll absolutely have to catch up for a beer soon. Okay bye!" Deeks said, ending off the call.

"So? What's the goss?" Kensi asked.

"That was my buddy at LAPD Kensi. See I do have friends at LAPD." Deeks replied.

"Just get over the tantrums you two and Deeks inform us of the call PLEASE!" Sam said irritatingly.

"Kensi started it…..Okay it turns out that LAPD didn't know of Mick's suspected involvement and my buddy Bryan is doing some more digging. He unfortunately suspects though that it is highly likely more people are involved and could be people who are high up the chain – if you know what I mean"

"High up in the chain? Like who?" said Kensi.

"He can't say just yet and he doesn't know for sure who, but he thinks that there could be some personal attachments in regards to the corrupt sergeant and maybe senior politicians"

"So a senior politician or two is helping the sergeant with the goods?" Sam said. "Pffft, government, politicians, and the military sometimes shouldn't work together".

"Your buddy tell you anything Deeks?" asked Callen, walking back to his desk.

Deeks retold Callen about the call. "Well, a corrupt sergeant and corrupt politicians? What a surprise!"

A loud, piercing whistle came over the balcony. "Guys, do you wanna see what Nell and I have got?" Eric asked.

"Is it just me or has Eric's whistle got more ANNOYING?!" Sam asked grumpily.

"I like it when he doesn't whistle but uses some instrument or something instead" Deeks said.

"Don't encourage him Deeks please!" Callen pleaded.

As the team made their way into the tech room, Nell and Eric started putting data onto the screens.

"We found who the sergeant is. He is Sergeant Boyden Crotrill from Camp Pendleton. He is in charge of platoon 9 currently serving in Afghanistan" said Eric.

"Well at least we know his name now. What else?" asked Sam.

"I found out about that tattoo. It's an insignia of a particular secretive group, no one knows a lot about it. All members of the group though have this tattoo somewhere on their body" replied Nell.

"Like the sergeant, Mick and our prisoner" said Callen.

"Exactly" nodded Nell. "The group is called Conquers of Encephalon, with encephalon being a medical term regarding the brain".

"So, Conquers of the brain? Sounds like something out of a Dan Brown or Stephen King novel" said Deeks.

"You read books Deeks? You surprise me", Sam laughed.

"Do we know who is involved in the group Nell?" asked Callen.

"Well we know our three are involved and Deeks' pal at LAPD is still digging stuff up, but he did send emails and data through which indicates Sergeant Crotrill's best man from his wedding is Senator George Kiddle, who is second in charge to the Vice-President. Also Deeks, your ex-partner at LAPD may not be the only police officer we find involved with this" Nell said amazed.

"Kiddle's involved Nell?" Kensi asked"

"Maybe, we can't be sure yet, Hetty's on the phone to Washington now to see if we can get Kiddle here to LA for interrogation. Hetty wants Callen and Sam to head to Afghanistan to bring Sergeant Crotrill back here, while Deeks and Kensi can dig up what they can on Tanastro and check on the Nicaraguan cartel".

"Let's pack our bags, Sam" said Callen.

"Mmmm, I hear Afghanistan is so nice this time of year" replied Sam.
