Chapter 7

Kensi and Deeks arrived at the boatshed and made their way into the inconspicuous building down near the water.

"Remember Deeks, Hetty said we have to be careful and take things slow with this guy" Kensi warned.

"Hey who's more careful than me?" Deeks said indignantly.

Kensi shot her partner a – do you really want me to answer that – look for which Deeks replied with a childish pout.

"Senator Kiddle, I'm Special Agent Kensi Blye, this is my partner Detective Marty Deeks our LAPD Liaison, thank you for joining us here".

"Well, it's not like I was given much of a choice now was it Agent Blye? What am I even doing here?"

"Senator we have reasons to believe that you are involved with a Nicaraguan drug cartel who is also involved with a Sergeant Boyden Crotrill of Platoon 9" Kensi told him. "What can you tell us?"

"I don't know what you're talking about Agent! I have no dealings with drugs at all. I see no reason why you would believe this outrageous accusation".

Deeks opened the red folder onto the desk and pulled out various photos showing the Senator with the Sergeant in question. "These are photos of you with Sergeant Crotrill at a wedding isn't it?"

"Yes, but we were best men at each other's weddings, we have known each other for years, that doesn't prove anything Detective".

"No it doesn't Senator, however we have proof of recordings and emails you have sent to Sergeant Crotrill and Miguel Tanastro, who is incidentally in case you were unaware, the Police Head of the South American Crime Department who is also involved in the drug smuggling ring of the drugs to Sergeant Crotrill all done with not only your permission, but your assistance".

"If you have any recordings or emails of mine I demand you hand them over to me and this is a gross invasion of privacy! Have you no idea of who I am Agent and Detective? I am a Senator with the US Government".

"There is no invasion of privacy Senator when there is a cause for concern into the security of the United States, we have every right to search you and anyone else who may be involved so you better start talking" Kensi said.

"You do realise your career is effectively over with these findings of your involvement Senator?" asked Deeks. "There's not much of a chance of you getting another vote from anyone once people start to know about this".

The Senator glared at the two officers before him before heaving a sigh to himself and agreeing to the fact that the game was up. He was done for, and if he could lessen the punishment himself by stating what he knew then that was possibly the only way to lessen the damage to his now fragile reputation.

"Sergeant Crotrill and I go back a long way as you found. He called me about 3 years ago, telling me of the plans for the group". Senator Kiddle started explaining.

"The Conquers of Encephalon" Kensi stated.

"Yes. Crotrill and I believed that the power of the mind is invaluable, not only for someone like me in politics but most effectively for someone in war, like Crotrill was in Afghanistan. He wanted to exploit the edge over opponents as he called it, by giving his soldiers drugs to enhance their capabilities in the field, making them believe they were invincible and they would always win whenever they came across the enemy."

"Did you even think how dangerous those drugs would be to the soldiers in harm's way Senator? Or didn't you care?" Kensi angrily asked.

"Of course I thought about it Agent Blye! I told Crotrill I thought it wasn't a good idea and what did he want me to do about it?"

"And?" Deeks asked.

"And he told me he knew where and how I could get the drugs from. So I reluctantly agreed to help".

"So how do you know Miguel Tanastro then?" asked Kensi.

"Tanastro did an undercover op a while ago. He joined our group to find information about us".

"The tattoo" Deeks looked at Kensi, who nodded in agreement.

"We didn't trust him at first, we thought he was possibly undercover for someone, but he was good. He never blew cover and he slowly gave us reasons to trust him. In the end, I guess he felt more attached to our group and our beliefs than he did with LAPD. He knew the cartels in Nicaragua and helped acquiring the drugs needed".

"And you helped him smuggle them out of the country without detection" said Kensi.

"Yes" sighed the Senator. "I'm so ashamed now of what I did".

"Now you're ashamed Senator? I would have been ashamed at even agreeing to do this!" Deeks exclaimed.

"So what now? I've told you everything I know" asked the Senator, bowing his head in shame.

"Now, we hand you over to the Feds. We will also inform Washington of your involvement in this and I'm sure this will be the end of your career and your group" answered Kensi.

Kensi and Deeks placed the Senator in the holding room at the boatshed and drove back to OSP. As they had recorded the interrogation already, Hetty was aware of the revelations of the Senator and was on the phone to Washington as the pair walked in and back to their desks. Sam and Callen were already there greeting them as they came in.

"Hey, did ya bring back any souvenirs from sunny Afghanistan for me Sam?" Deeks chuckled.

"Yeah I put your name down to go there next time Deeks" Sam retorted with a laugh.

"You didn't did you?" Deeks looked shocked, but he knew Sam was just teasing him.

"Oh yeah, he did. I'm sure with that mop of hair you'll fit right in!" laughed Callen.

Hearing Kensi laughing Deeks immediately stopped her by saying "I don't know why you're laughing Kensi. As my partner you have to come with me!"

Hetty finished her calls and walked over to the bullpen. "What's the fallout Hetty?" asked Sam.

"Well Sam, Senator Kiddle's career in politics is definitely over. He's been handed over to the Feds and there will be a Senate inquiry into his actions with this smuggling".

"He didn't look the type I would vote for anyway" Deeks chuckled.

"What about Sergeant Crotrill and the troops?" Callen asked.

"The Sergeant has been dishonourably discharged and formal charges will be laid and most likely he will be sent to military prison very soon. His troops are suspended from duty and will undergo counselling and rehab for those who need it. It is possible that some of them can return to frontline duty after assessment".

"What about Mick?" Deeks asked.

"Mr Tanastro has been fired from the LAPD immediately. He also will face serious trafficking charges and will face court in the next few months. I'm sorry Mr Deeks I know he was a partner of yours".

"It's okay Hetty. I think I might head off. I'll see you all tomorrow". Deeks grabbed his bag and quietly left the room.

"Is he okay Kensi? He seems very down and really quiet" noted Callen.

"Yeah it's not like him. Usually I have to threaten him to shut him up" agreed Sam.

"He's confused and angry and hurt. This is the third time that someone he knows in LAPD has been found guilty of criminal activities. This is not why he joined the police force. He joined to help people, not arrest people in his own department. It's disheartening for him" replied Kensi.

"I see what you mean now Kens. I would be hurt too. Maybe I should talk to him?" Callen said.

"Or I can talk to him if you like?" Sam interrupted.

"No it's okay guys. Deeks is my partner. I think I can help him. I'll go talk to him, so I'll see you tomorrow".

"Okay Kens. Let us know if there's anything we can do to help?" Callen said nodding.

"Okay, but I'm sure we'll be fine. Thanks guys. Goodnight"

"Night, Kensi" Sam waved.
