Caught In The Act

Chapter 20

Sure it wasn't perfect back then

I'll be first to admit.

The things I didn't say

They haunt me.

And I know that I'm to blame

Bet it was hard to watch me put you through hell

"I love you Bridge. I do. But you don't get everything you want."

"You aren't going back to you're mom's. You have a routine and its my time with you. You just got here."

"Go upstairs and cool down. I'll let you know. When dinner is ready later." Lucas proclaimed.

Bridget glared up at him. She turned and went up the stairs. Stomping loudly.

Lucas let out a frustrated sigh. This would be a much longer and tension filled week then he imagined. But they would get through it.

He then went into his home office. Closing the door.

Getting out his cellphone. He called Brooke inviting her over for dinner tonight.

He was relieved when she accepted.

...

Hours Later

Lucas had put together a combination of dishes he knew they loved. Once he had everything on the table. He heard the doorbell ringing.

He then left the kitchen to answer it.

Smiling as he opened the door.

"Sparkling cider. And that dessert you love." Brooke said. Announcing her presence.

Lucas thanked her. "You didn't have to ring the bell. You have a key." He replied.

"I do but i'm not just going to barge in. You aren't living here alone these days. Its about time i properly meet Alex. Uncomfortable small talk doesn't cut it." Brooke replied.

"I'm glad you're here. I know it was last minute." Lucas said. Reaching out to hug her.

"I wouldn't miss an opportunity to see my favorite people." Brooke replied when they pulled apart.

"We can tell her about Rachel when she's older enough to grasp some confusing information." Brooke said.

"I agree. She's upset with me. She wanted to leave and go back to you. I told her she couldn't." Lucas explained.

"You made the right choice. Clearly she's alot more Davis then i realized. She's going to be alot. We aren't even anywhere near teen hormones yet. That's when we'll be getting stress lines and not sleeping." Brooke proclaimed.

"I'm looking forward to it. She's be a force. Like her mom."

"That has yet to fail you in any aspect of life." Lucas replied.

"Momma you're here. Sit next to me." Bridget said. A smile coming across her face at the sight of her mother.

"Sure honey. Let's go to the kitchen." Brooke said. Taking Bridget's hand in hers.

"Miss Davis. I didn't expect you here tonight." Alex said. As she entered the room.

"I don't like her." Bridget said. Looking to her mother.

"Last minute invite. And its Brooke. No need to be so formal." Brooke replied.

"We should get into the kitchen and eat." Lucas proclaimed.

"We'll get there. I've been thinking and since you're here now."

"I might as well ask and be honest."

"After a night of drinking which lead to you're marriage."

"I can't help but wonder how in love the both of you really were."

"And given what i've read the marriage wasn't exactly steady."

"I just find it interesting. One night with a broken condom"

"And that's supposed to symbolize everlasting love.?"

"I mean with you're history of neglectful parents i guess i shouldn't be surprised you would do everything possible to make sure you wouldn't be alone."

"Obligation. Souds very Davis." Alex said.

Brooke glared at her. Feeling his free hand bawl into a fist.

Lucas took her hand. Leading out of the living room and out into the backyard.

"What was she talking about momma?" Bridget asked.

Brooke pushed the rush of emotion back.

"We should take our seats in the kitchen and wait for you're dad." Brooke replied. Putting a smile on her face.

"What exactly is you're problem? You had no right or reason to go after Brooke like that!" Lucas exclaimed.

Alex laughed staring up at him. "The world can see it. Everyone in this town. A shared history and a kid is alot more then what you and her have."

"This is over." Lucas announced.

"Good i'm going to get another drink. Once i leave this house." Alex replied.
