I Am So Not A Cheater!
That night I was plagued by the recurring nightmare I've had ever since the day Edward left. It was identical to the one I'd had the night I woke up crying with Ava and Edward in my room except it was just the final bit of it.
Edward was standing there with a tiny girl with big brown eyes and long auburn hair. She looked a lot like me, only a lot shorter. They were both laughing at me too. "That's her?" She asked Edward, pointing at me.
He was laughing as hard as she was. "Yes, love, that's Bella." He called her 'love'. He only called me that. In the dream, I would mostly just stare at the two of them laughing at me, but tonight was different. Tonight when Edward and Bella showed up across from me, Edward wasn't the same. He looked depressed, and just plain off. "Bella, I'm sorry."
Both of us Bellas were confused to who he was actually talking to. "Sorry?" The 'real' Bella squeaked. "Sorry for what?"
"You aren't the real Bella. I'm going back to her." He pointed to me and I nearly melted. Oh, thank God he's coming back. He ran back over towards me, and, for once, I thought my dream wouldn't be a complete nightmare. I looked back towards the other Bella thinking my subconscious would tell me something else, but what I saw reminded me of everything I had to worry about.
Victoria was standing where the other Bella used to be snarling at Edward and me. My dream, my first good dream in however many months, ended with a crazy red head vampire about to kill me.
Which, in turn, caused me to scream in frustration rather than sadness, which, in turn, caused everyone to wake up from the different sound coming from my room, which, in turn, caused me to be uber-embarrassed and everyone else to be extremely angry when I said "Nightmare, sorry…"
Stupid nightmares, stupid Victoria, stupid EDWARD! That fickle ass hole! I can't believe he would run back and forth between two different 'real' Bellas like that! Oh wait, that was a dream. Well, technically it's my brain processing everything that's been happening, so maybe it has some truth to it. If Edward did find another 'Bella' wouldn't he be leaving her once he came back here? Or would he come back to me? Or is he finding another 'Bella' right now anyway? Alice and Ava told me that he was barely living down in South America or wherever he is…were they lying to me just to help?
Oh, God, I am so dizzy. Too many questions for too complicated a situation. I need extensive psychoanalysis, not a 'sunny' teenage werewolf. Maybe going to see Jacob is a bad idea, plus I would be totally leading him on if I hung out too much. This was not part of my plan for him to have a normal, well as normal as a werewolf can be, life without imprinting on a half-vampire, half-human baby because I really am not comfortable having a baby and having it imprinted on.
I glanced over at the clock. 6:45 AM, great, it is too early to be having this sort of internal struggle. Plus it's time for me to go to school. This first day of school I'll have to deal with without Alice around. It is a very good thing that Ava is sticking around or I would seriously lose it. Last night was evidence that I'm teetering on the edge of insanity. I even drove 10 miles over the speed limit driving home hoping that my vision of Edward would pop up and tell me to slow down.
He didn't, needless to say. Even when I semi-speeded to school today, I semi-hoped that he would show up. When I semi-flirted with Mike and Eric today I thought I could see him scowling out of the corner of my eye. I even swore that I saw him when Ava and I semi-overheard Mike talking to the group about a couple of guys in the sports shop who were raving about a huge bear in the woods. "This guy said what he saw was taller than any guy on all fours and pitch black. So I told him that there weren't any sightings for black bears, but he wouldn't believe me. So maybe this guy saw some sort of super-dog or bear that got mutated when it fell into a vat of molten radioactive material."
Okay, so we didn't listen to that last part. But what he said about tall black things roaming the woods means that the wolves are back out. And they are hunting for someone, or something according to their thoughts. Victoria must already be rearing her fiery head around town, which is seriously not good. Ava hasn't had any experience with the wolves yet except for them almost starting a war when Ava came back as a vampire, so she's pretty nervous that they're around. She knows about the treaty, of course, but still worries about them. We both know what happened to Laurent…
Heck, I'm worried about them and I yelled at their pack leader and most of the others a few months ago. Yet another reason for me not to go crawling to Jacob—he's going to turn into a wolf a lot sooner if I do. Maybe even faster since there's still a vampire hanging around with me practically 24/7. Well, not 24/7 much anymore. She misses Angel a lot, so she usually hangs out in their cottage in the woods. I'm starting to feel bad that I asked her to make Angel watch Edward for so long.
But I need someone to watch him. What if I go off the deep end and go jumping off of cliffs? I mean, there's no Harry Clearwater to go to a funeral for, but that doesn't mean there probably won't be some sort of way that the thought of me being dead pops up in Edward's brain. It's just too big a risk and I'm not in the mood to have to face that creeper Michael Sheen anytime soon.
I would have started my diary to Alice's non-existent e-mail, but I figured that I would be taking the whole 'movie' thing a little out of proportion. Okay, focus, just get yourself to school and on the way home you can pick up your piece of crap motorcycles. If you want to see Edward ever again, besides actually waiting for him to haul his ass back here, you will drive to Jacob Black's house and beg him to help you fix them.
Yeah, just keep on telling yourself that.
"Bella! Wait a sec!" I was on my way out finally. I was going to get my motorcycles today, this very hour if only Seth would get out of my way!
"Yeah, Seth? Is there something you needed?" I tried not to let my annoyance show just by mustering enough sadness to look emotionless. He usually leaves me alone when I look like this, which is most of the time. I kind of feel bad, he must feel like I really don't like him anymore. I really hope I don't cause him some sort of emotional distress to make him turn into a werewolf anytime soon. I wonder when he is going to turn into one. I mean, it's not going to be too soon because Jacob isn't even a werewolf yet, but Stephanie never said when he and Leah turn. Oh well, I'll find out soon enough.
"I was just wondering if you wanted to go down to La Push with me today. I was going to hang out with some of my friends, and, since you looked a little better yesterday, I thought you might be up for something." He looked nervous, unlike his usual happy self. I was probably the source of this too.
"Umm, I'm good. I was planning on going to a friend's house today anyway." I don't want to go to Jake's! I'll take the motorcycles to the professional mechanic store or something. I can't do it! I won't!
"Oh, okay…next time?" I feel so bad for him. He's always been so happy and I'm totally bumming him out. Why, oh why, can't I be normal for Seth's sake?
I nodded unenthusiastically and ran out to the truck. Okay, here's my plan: grab the bikes then drive to mechanic and get them fixed there. Jacob will never be involved. I won't go see him any time soon.
Crap, my phone started ringing. Private Number. The last time a private number called me it was James. I really don't want to answer, but maybe it's mom or someone back home calling. Here goes nothing. "Bella? YOU ARE SO GOING TO JACOB BLACK'S HOUSE TODAY OR I WILL KILL YOU!"
"Alice! You scared the crap out of me! Why are you calling me from a private number?"
"My phone doesn't have service here so I used a pay phone when I had a vision of you driving all the way to the mechanic in Port Angeles! You better get your bottom to Jacob's house or I swear I will go and tell Edward myself that you are dead right now!"
"ALICE! You wouldn't really do that, would you?" I asked her in a tiny voice. Knowing her, she probably would. I hate her! "Please don't make me go! I…I don't want to like Jacob! I'll be happier I swear!"
"No, no, no, NO! You are going and that's final! Now go buy your bikes…goodbye." She hung up on me. Stupid Alice, why does she like Jacob so much? I mean, sure, he's probably got like twenty abs right now, but come on! I don't want to fall in love with him and I don't want him falling in love with me. I just want peace and harmony in my love life, is that too much to ask for?
I quickly got my bikes, barely negotiating with the Marks' son about paying for them, then sped in the direction of Port Angeles. Alice can kiss my butt! I am not going to Jacob's today and that final…
My car just stopped working.
Like, it just stopped running. The engine clicked off and it wouldn't turn back on now matter how hard I turned the key. I just filled it up with gas yesterday!
The door flew open without me touching it, which made me scream bloody murder! Faster than I thought, a cold pale hand covered my mouth. "Shut up, Bella!" I heard a familiar voice say to me. The hand was taken away from my mouth finally.
"Ava? What the hell? Did you just do that?" I asked, meaning my car.
She looked triumphant. "Yes I did. I've been playing around with my powers lately. I just told your engine to turn off and stay off, and it worked! Isn't that cool?" She squealed like a fan girl. I, on the other hand, was kind of freaked out. It's not fair she's this powerful. We won't be telling the Volturi about her anytime soon, Aro would go crazy over her.
"Yeah, it's wicked cool. But why did you turn my engine off?"
She looked guilty and braced herself for a scolding. "Oh, that's the bad part. See, I got this call from Alice…"
I rolled my eyes and started banging my head against the steering wheel. Darn you Alice! "Oh, God!"
"I'm sorry! She told me that you weren't going to go to Jacob's and I got a little worried. I don't want you having a repeat of last night anytime soon. You haven't seen your little figment since last night, have you?"
"No, sadly I have not. But my dreams are changing. He came back to me last night, Ava. But it was so much worse in the end because Victoria was in my dream! Have you noticed her around at all?"
Ava always gets angry when I mention anything about Victoria or James or Laurent. She was practically fuming right now. "I wish I could just tell her to rip her own head off! But no, I haven't smelled her around at all just yet, but I know she's out there! I mean, if the wolves are out that has to mean that she is to, right? Unless they're actually out trying to hunt me…"
"Oh, come on. They aren't hunting you. They already know that you're here and you weren't bitten by one of the Cullens. You're fine and you know it."
"You're right. But I still have to be more careful about Victoria. I totally want to help Edward rip her slimy little head off." Edward. I slumped down in my seat even further when she said his name. She could tell, so she changed the subject quickly. "Okay, case in point for Alice. You are going to Jake's if I have to drive you there myself!"
"No, you can't! You'll get killed by them if you cross the line!" I tried starting the car again, and this time it turned on.
"Wow, Alice really is good. She said you'd go if I said that."
I glared over at her as I started down the road again. "Tell Alice that I'm going to burn her closet and hide her visa cards if she ever does that again."
Ava laughed and nodded before she jumped out of the car. I am so giving Alice's credit cards to one of the wolves so she can't see where they are when she gets back.
Jacob was by my door before I even cut off the engine. I guess my truck really can be heard from miles away. "Bella! Hey, shorty!" Somehow I managed to smile.
"I'm most definitely not short! I'm just not an abnormally tall sixteen-year-old like you! Holy Jeez, Jake, where did you get the muscles from, you're too young for those!" I said when he hugged me. It vaguely reminded me of an Emmett hug.
"It's all in the genes, Bella."
"You know steroids come with a lot of side effects…you might even sprout a mustache! Oh, wait, that won't happen for a while. You don't even have any stubble on your chin yet." I scratched his chin for effect. I was feeling better already, maybe Alice was right. He swatted me away before giving me another hug.
His 'sunny grin' made me start smiling too. "Man, I missed you! Come on in, though, you're getting all wet!" We sprinted to beat each other to the front door. I won, of course. I kind of forgot about Billy, though. He probably wouldn't be all that happy to see me since I sort of blurted that I know all about werewolves and never really gave them an explanation as to why I did. "Hey, Dad, look who stopped by."
"Hey, Mr. Black." I waved meekly, still dreading what he would say.
He surprised me. He looked genuinely happy to see me. "Well, what do you know! It's good to see you, Bella."
"It is? I mean, it's good to see you too!" I forced a bit of a laugh. "Jacob, I need to talk to you about something. Show me your garage?"
He started smiling so wide I thought his cheeks would burst. "Sure, sure, it's this way. We'll see you later, Dad."
"You two have fun! I'll call Sue and see if she wants to have dinner down here!" He called from the kitchen. Great, before I got a chance to say no, Jacob pulled me back out into the rain and straight into the garage.
"So, here she is! What do you think?"
"Nice and cozy in here," I turned around to see him brighten at whatever thought popped into his head. Most likely about getting nice and cozy with me in that Rabbit. "Plus, I think that Rabbit is the ugliest car I've ever seen in my entire life. Honestly, Jake, I thought you would finish that car before now! Now I might actually feel bad about giving you another project."
He brightened up again. Maybe he doesn't really like the Rabbit. I sure as hell don't, it looks disgusting! "What kind of project?"
"Jacob, how good are you at motorcycles?" A grin spread across both of our faces. This may be the beginning of a new friendship...notice I said friendship. There is nothing that is going to make me want him anymore than as a friend. Not his cute Taylor Lautner-esque face, nor his attitude, nor those really hard abs that was crushing into my stomach when he hugged me. Nope, none of those things will make me want to love him like the stupid Bella from the book does. Nope, nope, nope.
"I'm fair, I'd say. My friend Embry has a dirt bike. We work on it together sometimes. Why?" He was still grinning, so I'm pretty sure he knew where I was going.
"Well, I recently invested in a couple piles of scrap metal and I was wondering if you would use your magical mechanic skills to turn them into motorcycles again."
"Cool. I'll give it a try."
My face fell. I was feeling somewhat normal and decided to be sarcastic Bella once again. "Try? You can only try? Oh, dear God, what am I going to do if my own mechanic doesn't have any self-confidence in his mad skills?" I even pretended to cry. Man, Jacob really is better than a psychoanalyst!
He pulled me into another hug. I could tell from his normal body temperature that he wasn't going to go crazy on me and turn into a werewolf early. "Shut up, Bella." He told me half-heartedly. He looked like he was about to start crying from holding in a laugh too long.
"Fine, but I do have a stipulation in this deal. My uncle and Sue can't find out about this. Actually I'm pretty sure Leah or Seth shouldn't find out either. Oh, and I can't really pay you because I spent all my birthday money months ago and I don't have a job. I can pay you in sarcastic remarks if you want them, though, and probably in the form of a bike for yourself…" I hinted. I didn't really want to go into specifics, I kind of just wanted to hang out and help, but I figured that I would have to get all of the things I wanted out before I forgot about them.
"Swee-eet. And no worries, I wouldn't tell anyone about our secret project. I swear on a stack of bibles."
"Hmm, swear on a stack of Twilight books and maybe I'll believe you."
"A stack of what?" Wow, it is actually surprising how much I missed having an inside joke with myself about Twilight's existence.
"Oh, just a book that I'm obsessed with. Maybe I'll tell you about them one day. They're for grown-ups only…"
"Grown-ups? I'm legal now, doesn't that count?" He crossed his arms looking pouty, and for like a second, I got distracted at how big his biceps were.
"Nope, no Twilight for you, mister! Got it? I'm going to use my eighteen years to my advantage and make you never look at the book Twilight. It's a girly book, anyway, very boring."
He scrunched up his nose like something smelled bad all of a sudden. "Eww…okay, no Twilight. Alright, well, can you bring the bikes down tomorrow or something?"
"Sure, I could, but since they're already in the back of my truck I thought you could take a look at them now." He slugged me on the arm much like I used to do to Seth.
"Come on, let's see these piles of scrap metal." We snuck towards my car, every few minutes glancing back to make sure Billy didn't see us. "These aren't half bad. This one here will actually be worth something when I'm done—it's an old Harley Sprint."
"Coolio, take that one then as your well-deserved payment. I don't really care what mine looks like, I just want to go fast. Really fast. And I want to be dangerous and reckless and stupid and…all sorts of other synonyms for those words! I want to go fast, though, Jake, really fast." Jacob looked at me for a second like I was the craziest person in the world, but then started laughing so hard that he was doubled over trying to catch his breath. "Whoa, there, easy boy. Come on, I'm not that funny."
"You sounded just like the little kid on Ricky Bobby! 'I wanna go fast! I wanna go fast!'" He just kept on laughing harder and harder until I started laughing along with him.
"And for a second I thought I was going to be the only crazy one here. It's good to know that there are others of my crazy kind."
"Hey! I'm not the same brand of crazy as you! You pale people just absorb the sun differently than people like me and it causes your brains to fry a little." Well, well, well, Jacob Black, I didn't know you could be sarcastic! I'm slightly impressed.
"Come on, I'm getting wet again, and I want to start on these bad-ass puppies today!" I pointed at the motorcycles and down to the ground to see if he would be able to lift them out of my truck like Taylor Lautner did in the movie. To my great and total delight, he did. I even sort of borrowed Kristen's lines. "Careful, those things are actually really…heavy." He smirked at me before pulling the other one off in the same way.
"Show-off…" I muttered, not really meaning it. Jacob Black…huh, maybe I won't hide Alice's credit cards any time soon.
Ta-da! so Sarah/Bella and I had a talk and she told me that she might sort of give Jacob a small itty bitty chance, but only for a little while right now...she wants a glimpse at his 8-pack...and I'm going to have to agree with her on that one!
okay, enough babble...go review! please, you know you want to!! and, if you've seen the movie, tell me what you thought of it!
Preview for the next chapter:
"I don't think I'm quite his type. He's probably into more native girls, and younger ones at that. It could almost be defined as pedophile-ish." Ugh, the whole Claire imprinting thing still grosses me out a bit.
Jacob stopped walking and stared at me mouth agape for a few minutes. "Bella, where did you get that from?"
"I just know about these sorts of things, Jake." I grabbed his arm and tugged him forward again.
He started to say something, then looked down and blushed. I waited patiently as I could for him to start up again. "What kind of type do I have?" he whispered.
I pretended to think about it for a minute, scratching my head and looking up towards the clouds. "Well, for you I would go with a younger girl as well. One with bronze colored hair and chocolate brown eyes, and she'll have some sort of really awesome parents that may or may not kill you because of your relationship with her. I'm leaning towards the whole being murdered by her parents, though."
Once again, he stopped dead in his tracks.
