*Disclaimer* Hi, Everyone! I am in a great mood! you know why, BECAUSE I OWN NEW MOON! as in i own a DVD, not the story, because as i've mentioned before, if i actually owned the story jacob would not be an issue (i would have had him run over by alice's yellow porshe)
so, anyway, this chapter is both long and short...I cut the actually story a little short to add in a little bit about what happened with Edward and ALice and how he ended up on the cliff with Bella, plus his thoughts before and after that happened. I suck at writing like Edward, so after this it will never happen again.
mkay? mkay. So, without further adeiu (however you spell that) here's the next chapter (oh, btw, there's going to be a lot more action in this version of New Moon starting next chapter...you'll get a sneak peek w/ the usual sneak peek! :))
oh, yeah, REVIEW FOR ME! xoxo
Jacob Is So Not Paris!
And, as quickly as I thought I'd died, I woke up and died again. But this time there wasn't anything dark around me. Unless you count Jacob, but he's not dark just tanned.
"Breathe!" And, of course, he was pounding down on my chest to get all the water I'd inhaled out. This is probably the closet he's ever gotten to a girl's chest anyway, so he might as well enjoy it! Ugh, I need to talk! I need to talk! Get this damn water out of me! "Breathe, Bella! C'mon!"
Well, that did it! He finally pounded hard enough that I coughed out what felt like an entire gallon of water. "Oh. My. God." I rasped as I choked out even more water. I couldn't sit up because when I tried someone put their hands down on my shoulders to keep me in place.
"Bella? Bells, honey, can you hear me?" I heard Jacob ask.
"Yeah," it just sort of gargled out, so I just nodded to get the point across. I attempted to sit up again, but whoever was holding me down was really strong.
"How long had she been unconscious?" Whoever it was that was holding me down was the one who'd said it. I'm guessing it was Sam. It only made sense.
"I don't know." Jacob replied, sounding pretty darn frantic. Man, I can't move to swat his hand away! Now he's going to get all sorts of ideas in his head. "A few minutes? It didn't take long to tow her to the beach."
"She's breathing. She'll come around. We should get her out of the cold, though. I don't like the color she's turning…" Hey! That's not very nice! I wish I could scream at the two of them. They need to take me home! What about Edward? Is he okay? And who the heck was the wolf who jumped him?
"You think it's okay to move her?" Yes, move me! Move me! For God's sake, you idiots, get me out of here!
"She didn't hurt her back or anything when she fell?"
"I'm fine." I tried to croak. They at least registered that I tried to talk. "Jake, I need to go home!" I said as loud as I could.
"Oh!" He looked so much happier now that he finally realized that I was completely okay. "Oh, Bella! Are you okay? Can you hear me? Do you hurt anywhere?"
I felt Sam help me sit up, and I slowly found my voice again. "I'm fine! I need to go home, Jacob, now!" Oh God, what if they hurt Edward? What if they killed him? "Edward was here, Jacob. He was here. He might be back at my house, but I need to get there. I have to find him." My voice, unreliable as it is, cut out multiple times so I'm pretty sure Jacob didn't get much of what I was trying to say. Which was that I was about to kill him if he didn't get me out of here really soon!
"Come on, then, let's get you out of here." Yeah, he didn't catch anything about Edward. He's way too calm for that. He lifted me up like I didn't weigh anything at all, which is definitely not true. I guess he would be strong enough with all those muscles though.
Now that I get a look at his face, he actually comes across as a little pissed off right now. I fight the urge to ask if it's about Edward because I notice he isn't taking me in the direction of my truck. "Jacob, did you not understand me? I have to get home right now!" I smacked his bare chest, ignoring how cold I was, to get his full attention. "Hey! Take me to my truck and drive me home!"
He looked down at me, and I could just tell he knew. That Edward was there with me, I mean. Or he at least knows that there was a vampire there, and he might have seen Edward. "You got her?" Sam wasn't far behind us. It probably isn't the best time to argue about whose arms I was wrapped in just a few minutes ago. Especially if Sam doesn't realize it was a Cullen.
"Yeah, I'll take it from here. Get back to Charlie and Sue, they'll want to know where Bella is. I'll catch up later. Thanks, Sam." Why do I feel like I'm about to get a lecture from Jacob? Sam just looks like I've done something monumentally stupid and he's disappointed in me.
Sam took off in another direction, but Jacob was still carrying me towards his house. "Jacob Black, I mean it, let me go! I have to get home right now, or I swear to God I'll—"
Jacob interrupted me, his tone too harsh mixed in with my bad mood. "You'll what? Call another vampire down here to get you? Why didn't you tell anyone that there were more than just three Cullens here?"
I took a deep breath to calm myself down from the level of wanting to slap him. "I didn't know! But now I do, and I have to get home before something really bad happens and you never see me again." If Edward went to Italy and I don't make it in time, I don't think I'd be able to come back here. And then there's that added bonus of the Volturi wanting to kill me.
"Bella, what are you talking about? What's going to happen?" He wasn't mad at me anymore, just freaked out. Why does everyone think I'm the damsel in distress around here?
"Nothing, if I get home like right now!" He had stopped moving towards his house, but he still looked pretty skeptical about just letting me off the hook. "Fine, you want the truth? It was Edward, all right! He was the vampire that was with me, and he only showed up because he thought I was going to jump off the cliff! And now, unless whoever jumped on him killed him, he's going to think that I'm dead because of him!" Jacob stuck me down on the ground to continue on with my wild arm movements and shrieking. Plus I sort of slammed my arm on his head a couple of times already. "Which will cause him to run to the most evil vampires in the entire world to ask for his death, and then I'm going to have to run after him! In Italy! With evil vampires! AND I'M GOING TO DIE!"
Jacob grabbed my shoulders. I'm really starting to not like being touched there just in the past day. "Bella, Bella, calm down. You're not going to die."
I exploded out of his grip. If I was actually a werewolf, I would have ripped his head off by now. I really do need to work on that temper problem of mine. "You don't understand! These vampires want him and me! We've got something that's powerful and they want it, and these vampires will do anything to get what they want. I can't let Edward go there and get himself killed just because one of your stupid brothers can't tell the difference between a red-head female vampire and my boyfriend!"
That struck a nerve. Jacob didn't bother trying to hold back all of his anger. "Well, who's to say it was one of my brothers? It was me, but I was just trying to protect you, Bella. How was I supposed to know that your boyfriend broke the treaty just to push you off of a cliff?"
"He didn't push me off of anything! You showed up and I fell off without someone able to grab me! This is all your fault! If you hadn't been so stupid as to just jump the first vampire you see, I might not have had to rush home to stop Edward from going to the Volturi!"
Jacob didn't touch on the other insults I'd thrown at him. "What the hell is the 'Volturi'?"
"You know what? I don't have time to explain this to you. Just get me the hell back home." I stomped towards my truck, making completely sure that he couldn't make out how dizzy I was actually feeling. I almost stopped to ask him where Uncle Charlie and Sue were, but I was too angry at him to care. Well, that's not true. I cared about Uncle Charlie and Sue's get-together thing today, just not about Jacob.
Nope, I don't care about Jacob Black in the least bit and the way we argue is just proof that we do not and will not ever belong together. Just like the book says. I'd halfway expected that I would have to drive myself home, but Jacob slid in the driver's seat before I could sit down.
"Get in, Bella." He commanded in a tight voice.
"Whatever." I had to sit down before I passed out anyway.
The whole ride back to my house was deathly silent. Jacob was glaring straight ahead at the road and I didn't want to talk to him just in case I lost my temper again and started screaming at him.
But I did figure something out in the silence. I need to tell Jacob everything about me. About the books, I mean. He really shouldn't be the only one of the whole group of characters besides Uncle Charlie and Sue that doesn't know about everything. He might understand the other parts of me that way too like how I never let him hold my hand or anything remotely friendly and how I always blame myself when huge incidents happen. And maybe he'll let me go, finally. To Italy, that is, because I have the feeling that nothing beyond imprinting on my half-immortal child is going to get him off of my trail.
But the bad part about this arrangement is that he will not attempt to put his 108-degree arms around me, which definitely sucks because I am most definitely freezing and cold! And freezing! But I ignored the cold for a second when I realized how many people are probably a bit upset with me right now.
I reached down for my purse, which I'd stashed in the truck before running to the cliff just in case something stupid happened like it did. My phone had about twenty new messages and the number was growing pretty steadily. I opened a couple of text messages from Ava, which basically were all her livid about the fact that I'd willingly go to the place where Bella in the book jumped off the cliff. And a couple of the messages from Alice were about help coming.
I just got it. Alice was going to the airport to pick Edward up. Edward. Oh my God, he was coming back to get me to forgive him and now he thinks I'm dead because of him. Shit! "Jake, do you think you might be able to drive a little faster?"
For the first time ever in my time in Forks, I truly hate my truck and its inability to travel over 60 miles per hour. Luckily though we were literally about to pull in the driveway. "OH!" Jacob's voice finally broke the entire ride's silence. He didn't sound so happy either. Okay, this is a good sign. "Holy crap!"
A very good sign. "What? What is it?" I asked almost jubilantly. Please be here! Please be here!
"Vampire."He spat out. Yes! I jumped out of the truck before he could start moving again. COME ON, BE IN THERE! "Bella, what are you doing?!?" He jumped out right behind me and tried to grab my arm, but my determination was too fast even for a werewolf.
"Edward?" I screamed as I burst through the front door. You have to be here! "Edward! Alice! Ava! Is anyone here? Hello?" Jacob started tugging on my arm so hard that I ended up back outside.
"Bella, what are you doing? You didn't tell me that there would be a vampire here if I took you home! Treaty or no treaty, that's my enemy in there." He had his hand over his nose just like Esme had when I'd tripped and bled in the driveway. Oh, how I love flashbacks.
"Is it Edward? Can you tell?" I asked him eagerly, not really caring about the fact that he was shaking up a storm.
"Afraid not, Bells. But thanks for telling me about your daring attempt to bring out your hallucination." A very upset voice said from behind me. Who else could it be but Ava since as far as I know Alice is out trying to find Edward for me? "I packed you already just in case of emergency. Now we just have to wait for Edward to do something other than stare at the ground." Yep, that's Ava. No one would have dared touch my messy closet other than her. Maybe Alice, but she would have used the jaws of life to get everything out of it.
I looked back up at Jacob, who was still slightly trembling, but he wasn't looking at me anymore. He was staring at the vampire in my doorway. I turned around to see Ava glaring right back at him. Well, this is going to be interesting. "Ava, Jacob. Jacob, Ava. Great, now that we've got those pesky introductions out of the way despite the fact that you two have already met one another, I really think I need to make a phone call." I squirmed out of Jacob's grasp and moved towards the house again. Ava stopped me before I could go to the house phone.
"He won't pick up, Bella, I've tried."
"Even on the house phone?" She shook her head sadly. "What about Alice?" She shook her head again. Okay, well who else can I get in touch with? "You didn't tell Rosalie, did you?" She shook her head emphatically this time.
"Not a chance in hell would I do that. We both know what would happen if anyone did."
"Ahem…" Both of our heads shot towards the interrupter at the same time. Oh, yeah, I'd forgotten Jacob was still here. I thought he would have taken off into the woods by now with all this talk about Edward and vampire stuff going on. "I don't know what would happen, but I have a feeling that I should get some sort of explanation about it."
Ava and I looked at each other, shocked that he actually demanded something like that. Especially for me since I'd been thinking that I would give him the books, sans Twilight, so he could find out the truth. Funny, I thought Edward was the mind reader. "Ava, will you stay out here and watch for anyone coming? Jake, you come with me." Ava moved as fast as she possibly could as I dragged Jacob inside the house and up the stairs in my lightning fast human speed.
Jacob growled at her as he passed by. "Jeez Jacob, it's not a war." I mumbled under my breath.
"You know, this is something you don't understand, Bella." Jacob stopped me before I could go upstairs. Using my own line against me, I see. Interesting tactic, I must say.
"What? That two different types of people can't get along because of what they are? Sounds pretty primitive to me. And besides, it's not like werewolves are much different from vampires anyway! You're all insanely attractive, it's just vampires are cold and werewolves are warm."
"We don't have to kill anyone to live, though! I'm sorry, Bella, but that's just the way we've been told to see things."
I can't believe we're honestly having this argument right now. Of all the times, Jacob! I started to say something, but I just waved it off. There was no use trying to change this anyway. At least, not now. "Jacob, I don't have time for this. Just stay here, all right? I'm going to get something that'll explain everything to you. You just kind of have to keep an open mind about all of it. And no making fun of me because of it, or I will use it as blackmail against you."
How is it that everything I say to Jacob makes him even more confused? I need a handbook on how to explain complicated things without giving the whole entire thing away. "Blackmail? Bella, what is this—"
"Just promise me you'll look at all of it." I stared him down until he gave in.
"Fine, I promise. Oh, and I'm sorry." He called up as I ran upstairs.
"For what?" I stopped and turned back towards him.
"For yelling at you so much tonight and pretty much everything I've said tonight. Can we just call it on a full moon?" He grinned up at me, which of course made me want to go give him a hug, but I resisted.
"Don't worry about it, you're forgiven. At least until you do something else stupid." I ran towards my room before he could say anything else. I could hear his laughter as I dug through my not-messy-anymore closet to the box in the back where I stored all of my Twilight things.
My heart gave a little squeeze when I looked to the empty space where I always had my Twilight book. I wonder where it is now that Edward is or was here. I shook off my worry for just a minute to focus on what I needed to give Jacob. Twilight movie and New Moon book should do him just fine. And since I didn't have the New Moon movie just yet, I wasn't going to give that to him yet. And if I gave him Eclipse he might try to find some other way to win me over.
I heard the distinct noise of my cell phone ringing, but I chose to ignore it since I figured it was Ava calling to tell me how much of an ass Jacob is. It rang two more times, and by the fourth time I thought I should answer it because whoever it was calling me obviously had something very important to tell me. It ringing, so I figured I would call whoever it was back. Then the phone downstairs started ringing.
I shoved the box back in its proper place and laid down Jacob's things on the bed before I picked up the phone. 4 missed calls. I didn't have the number in my phone book anymore, but I would recognize it anywhere.
Edward.
The phone downstairs had stopped ringing a second earlier, which meant something unthinkable.
"EDWARD!" I screamed as loud as I possibly could, hoping in some small part of me, that he would either hear it from wherever he was outside or on the phone.
"Swan residence," I heard Jacob say from downstairs.
"NO! JACOB!" I bolted down the stairs, but in my still-slightly-dizzy-from-cliff-jumping state I fell down the last couple and twisted my ankle.
"He's not here." Crap it! It's definitely Edward! "She's not either." Talking about Sue, no doubt.
"Damn it! Jake, don't tell him that!" I pulled myself up on the banister and hobbled into the kitchen. I winced every time I put pressure on my ankle, but I gritted my teeth and ignored the pain.
But gritting my teeth didn't stop me from full-out screaming when I heard Jacob's voice again, "They're at the memorial service." Shit, no! Why hadn't I figured that out? God, I'm so darn oblivious! The memorial on the same day, I should have figured that out from the very start. It would make logical sense if I'd died that there might be a memorial service or something on the same day. And here I was worried that Uncle Charlie would have a heart attack or something!
I slammed right into Jacob, but I didn't have enough strength in me to knock him all the way over. I snatched the phone from his hand and prayed that Edward would still be on the phone. "Edward? Edward, are you still there? Please, if you can hear me, I swear to you it's not my memorial service! Listen to me very carefully, I am alive."
I couldn't tell if the line was silent because Edward had crunched his phone up or if he was just in shock. I hope it was the latter. "Ava!" I heard his voice whisper angrily, and then the line went dead.
Oh, Edward, you stupid idiot...well, that's all the normal Bella/Sarah talk! (sorry to Team Jacob people, she and I talked and we can barely even consider Jacob a viable replacement for Edward)
here's the action packed (well, almost) sneak peek!
Preview for the next chapter:
"Bella, do you need a—" He stopped short when he saw the open duffel bag with all of my clothes inside.
"Seth, I can explain—"
"No, I don't want to hear it. Where are you going, Bella?" I tried to explain, but he cut me off again. "No, you know what, I don't really wanna hear you say 'nothing' or 'nowhere' again when I ask you a question. I thought you were going to go to the memorial. You know how much it means to our family, which I thought you were a part of."
Oh God. Shoulders shaking, snarling, and I'm pretty sure he's radiating heat. "Seth, just calm down." I held my hands out, looking more like a zookeeper than his cousin. "Look, I'm sorry. I know I've been kind of out of it lately, and I sort of ignored you, but that's going to change as soon as I leave. I'll be back soon, though, I promise."
"You know, you leaving might be great for all of us!" Oh, crap, I'm way too late. He's going to phase right in front of me.
"JACOB! HELP ME!"
This is Edward's POV (just another reminder...I suck at Edward. I love him, i really do, but i can't jump into his head very welll) so, anyway, this picks up a couple of days before the 'cliff day' occurs...just keep that in mind. (TELL ME HOW BAD IT WAS IN YOUR REVIEW!!)
"Alice." This is the third time this week she's called. Why won't she leave me alone with everything I've stolen these past few months? I told Bella-or Sarah as I continued to call her while I used everything inside of me to break away from her-that I would steal every bit of Twilight paraphernalia if that meant helping her move on.
Like that's going to help, you moron. My tormenter is back. Her voice, as much as I loved to hear it before I left, has tortured me from the moment I left her back in Forks. The only thing that's going to happen because of this is that we'll both be miserable for months until I find you or you come back. How did she know what would become of all of this? Because of the book, I suppose. I wonder what she thought when she discovered I took her only copy of Twilight with me.
I don't really understand what compelled me to take it in the first place. As I was erasing everything from her life that would invariably draw her mind back to me, I caught a glimpse of the book that changed both of our lives forever. I couldn't find it in myself to hide it with her birthday gifts, but I couldn't leave it. And I desperately wanted something to remember her completely by. So I took it and it hasn't left my sight since I drove out of Forks. But what I didn't expect was to read all of her notes in the story about what we did, compared to what the book had in it.
My favorite was when she recalled the moment when she revealed she knew that I was a vampire. Of course, she knew the second she saw my family and I, but the way she shouted the word 'vampire' at me was by far the most amusing thing she ever did. Hey, it's not like you didn't have your moments too! You were the one who tried to convince me that I was dreaming when I caught you creeping on me in my bedroom.
"Edward, are you even listening to me?" Alice's voice broke me out of my reverie.
"Alice, what exactly is it that you want me to do?" My voice sounded so dull compared to how it had sounded when I still had Bella. My Bella.
"Come home, beg her forgiveness, and…come home! Edward, you have no idea how broken she still is. She has horrifying dreams every night and does all sort of stupid things because she misses you so much! Why can't you just get over yourself and go back to her?"
"Alice, I thought you were in Denali." I growled at her. We were supposed to disappear completely from Bella's life. I promised her she would have a normal life! "You never went there did you? What about Ava? Are she and Angel there with you?"
"Yes, Edward, okay? We figured out your little trick as soon as we arrived at Tanya's and left immediately after we heard you left Bella out in the middle of the woods! Look, I know what you've been doing. Stealing Twilight things from bookstores? Really, Edward? Just admit that you made a mistake and come back to Bella. I mean it, Edward."
Come back? How could I go back? She knew I was lying until I told her I never loved her in the first place. She would never believe me if I told her I loved her again or never stopped in the first place. "Alice, she would never take me back."
"I don't care. Just because you think she wouldn't, doesn't mean you shouldn't try."
"Alice, I—"
"Is that Edward, Alice? Let me talk to him, he needs to know something about her." Ava's voice suddenly took over the phone. "Edward, are you there? Listen, I don't care how you do it, but you have to get Bella back. I love her too, you know. She's my best friend and I want her to be happy. And for some unfathomable reason, you make her happy. And, I don't particularly want to use my power on you, but if you don't do something really soon, I will."
If I were still a human, I would have been, as Bella called it, frozen. Both Ava and Alice know how strong my will power has been in staying here anyway. The only thing that's been keeping me here is the thought that Victoria might be around here, unless I'm an even worse tracker than I already thought.
"By the way, Edward, if you need another reason to why you should come back here besides the intense love that you and my best friend share, Victoria's back. In Forks. Laurent, too. You're booked in coach class on Flight 630 in two days. Alice is picking you up at the airport. Bye, you stupid jackass."
Frozen. It is a stupendous fact that I do not have to breath. Victoria was in Forks the entire time, just like Bella had predicted. I wonder if that meant she was with the wolves as well. No, Alice or Ava would have told me that. Edward?
It was her again, of course. She never left my mind for very long. "Bella. What do I do?" I whispered to her.
Please come back. Edward, you have no idea how much I need you. I love you.
"What do I do to get you back?" I gripped onto her book, hoping for some sort of inspiration.
She laughed a little. Bring some flowers. Freesias, preferably.
……………..
"There you are! Come on, Edward, we need to get rolling." Alice didn't look very happy to see me or just perky in general as she usually is.
"Alice, what is it? You looked worried." Oh, Canada! Oh, Canada! "Why are you singing the Canadian National Anthem?" I knew the only time she did that was when she wanted to avoid thinking something. "What is going on?"
"Nothing. Get in the car." Darn it, darn it, darn it! Tralalala…I hope she's okay…she wouldn't do anything too stupid…Shoot! Edward don't listen to me, I'm rambling. Think nothing of it! She was driving the car much faster than legally accepted, even faster than she would usually drive. Good grief, where is Ava? I'm going to kill her!
"Alice, tell me what is wrong. Is Bella okay? What happened?"
Alice was not going to answer me, but she received a vision that she couldn't cover up. Bella was calling her about something, and she was obviously upset about something. When she snapped out of it, she grabbed her phone before I could. "Alice, what is wrong with her? Why is she—"
"She's fine, Edward. We just have to hurry up and get her before—"
"Before what? Alice, please, just tell me what is going on." Alice rolled her eyes, but complied nonetheless. Bella, my Bella, was calling Alice with a frantic message. "Alice, I'm going to the cliff. I'm not jumping or anything, but I'm going there. I have to see him. I'm sorry." She hung up and drove to some place beyond the treaty line.
"Where is she going?" I demanded.
"The cliffs in La Push." Her eyes went blank as she caught onto what I was planning to do. "Edward, you can't go past the treaty line! They'll kill you! No, Edward!" I jumped out of the car and started running.
"Bella!" I had no idea if she would hear me, but I had to reach her before she jumped. I remembered my contingency plans from this time last year when I almost didn't make it in time to save Bella from James. The Volturi would be difficult to persuade to kill me with my power, as Aro had made perfectly clear the last time Carlisle visited them, but I would do anything to join Bella if she ever…but that was not going to happen.
I finally caught sight of her a few miles ahead, inching closer to the edge of the cliff every second. She was no longer just a voice in my head, but the real thing was once again right in front of me. But, didn't I ask her not to be reckless? She took another step towards the edge, and almost swayed over the side. "Bella! NO!"
I ran as fast as I ever have before when she raised herself on her tiptoes, looking more angelic in the pale sunlight than ever before. I almost stopped to look at her, but she would lose her balance any second. "NO!" I wrapped my arms around her waist so tight that for a split second I thought I'd hurt her. Her scent was more breathtaking than ever, but just being in close proximity with her once again made my dead heart feel like it was beating a mile a minute. "Bella…"
Her body naturally responded as it always had before by practically melting beneath my touch. How did I ever leave this girl? "Jeez, this hallucination's getting stronger than I thought." She rasped out. I was holding her too tightly. I was just too afraid that she would fall and I would lose her forever. But wait, she thought I was a hallucination.
"What? Bella, no, this isn't a hallucination." She froze. Slowly, as if she was afraid she would break me, she reached up and ran her hand through my hair like she always used to whenever we were close to one another. Her hand moved slowly down to my face like when we were in the meadow for the first time. "Bella…" A sigh escaped my lips. She braced herself again.
Suddenly, without preamble, she turned to face me. Tears were streaming from her chocolately-brown eyes, which only grew wider when she finally understood that I really was standing here with her. "Edward, is it…? No, no, no…" I was going to ask what was she was rejecting, but just as quickly as she turned to face me, she threw her arms around my neck and began sobbing.
I tried to comfort her by allowing her to cry, but I couldn't stop myself from planting small kisses everywhere I could on her. I'd been separated from her for far too long. The sound of her beating heart soon took over as the only thing I could hear. The most beautiful sound in the world.
But, just as soon as I was going to tell her we had to get out of the dogs' territory, a howl broke through the forest. Bella jumped back out of my arms as if she had been shocked. "Oh, my God. Oh, my God! OH, MY GOD!" I heard her chanting behind me, as I prepared to defend her against the dogs, which were growing dangerously close to us. I wasn't going to lose her now that I'd just gotten her back.
When they broke through the clearing, I saw that their numbers had increased heavily since the last time I was here. A russet-brown wolf saw me by Bella and launched itself at me.
I turned at the last second to pull Bella out of the way of the fight, but she was no longer standing where I thought she was. Instead I saw her fall, slowly as if in slow motion, off of the cliff that I'd found her about to jump off of. "Edward!" She screamed at me, but the wolf that had collided with me was still on top of me and I was forced to watch my Bella fall to her death because of my inability to get her to safety before the wolves descended.
The wolf jumped off of me and quickly looked over the cliff to where Bella had fallen. Bella! Hold on, Bells, I'm coming!
I looked over the edge as well, but I could no longer make out her shape in the water below. I was about to jump in after her, but the other wolves blocked my way. "Move dogs, she could die!" I snarled at them. They all stood their ground against me, but I tried to move around them. "Bella!" I called in vain over them.
Their thoughts all bombarded me at once.
How does he know Bella?
God, he reeks!
Dude, look at his eyes! He's one of the Cullens. Oh, man he broke the treaty, what should we do Sam?
Guys, I know who he is! That's Bella's ex-boyfriend, Edward. Maybe we should let him go, Bella would probably shoot us or walk us on a leash if we hurt him. I would have laughed at the visual he conjured if I wasn't so preoccupied with how to get around them. I had to call Alice. She would know if Bella was okay.
But she had to be. She couldn't die like this. Alice answered on the first ring. "Edward, get out of there now."
"Is she okay, Alice? Tell me!"
"First, get out of there. I can't see you unless you get away from the wolves."
"But what about Bella? I can't leave her down there unless she gets out."
Alice's voice suddenly turned mechanic. "She'll be fine. Get. Out. Now." With a backward glance at the now arguing wolves, I ran as fast as I could back across the border until I could hear Alice's thoughts ringing through the trees. COME ON, EDWARD!
"Alice, are you sure she's okay?" Ava was with her, asking about Bella. Angel was with them as well, but he was confused as to what was going on.
"I don't know! Why I ever encouraged her to talk to Jacob in the first place, I have no idea!"
"Alice, tell me. Now!" I was directly in front of her, searching her mind for anything useful. But nothing was there besides darkness. Then a vision of Ava leaving for Bella's house flitted across her mind. But nothing about Bella. "Where is she? Did you see her come up? Alice!" Why is everyone keeping secrets from me?
"Edward, calm down." Ava commanded. Her power didn't have any effect on me now, though. Before she could see me coming, I had her pinned against a tree.
"Calm down?!? Bella might be…dead," I could barely stomach the word, "and you expect me to be calm?" How could she be so calm about her own best friend's death? "I might have killed her! She was with me! I couldn't save her." I let her down before Angel made up his mind to attack me and broke down in silent, tearless sobs. "It was my fault."
Ava had to reassure Angel that everything was fine, that I was just shaken up. Alice gave Angel instructions to get in touch with the rest of the family in case something else happened. She told Ava to head towards Bella's house to watch out for 'them'. I was barely listening. I was already planning on how to get away from Alice to get to Italy.
"Edward, listen. I know you won't believe me, but Bella truly is okay. She was pulled out of the water by Jacob Black, who's a werewolf. That's the only reason I can't see anything about her. I can't see the werewolves for some reason, and while Bella is with them I can't see her future either. But I can assure you, she is alive."
"How?"
"Call her. On her cell phone." She held out her phone, but it wasn't like I didn't know the number by heart. Only because I can't truly believe that she could be gone, did I call.
Her voicemail picked up four times, but I never left a message. I couldn't. If she was really dead, no one would want to listen to my heartbroken messages. Ugh, Edward! She's not dead! Alice screamed inside. Call the house phone.
Charlie and Sue would have been informed by now if Bella was…gone. "Swan residence." Jacob Black? Why would he be answering the phone. Edward! I heard her voice cut through the woods and the phone, but I supposed that it was just her voice speaking in my head again.
"Can I speak to Charlie, please?" I imitated Carlisle's voice without thinking.
"He's not here." He obviously recognized that it was a vampire, as his voice hardened more so than when he answered.
"And Sue?"
"She's not either." Damn it! Jake, don't tell him that!
"Where can I reach one of them, then?" My patience was wearing very thin with this mongrel.
"They're at the memorial service." Memorial Service. Bella, the girl who entered into our world through a book, was killed because of me. I would hold onto the memory of her last minutes until my own would come in a matter of days. Through the haze of disbelief in my head, I heard her voice clearly once again. "Edward? Edward, are you still there? Please, if you can hear me, I swear to you it's not my memorial service! Listen to me very carefully, I am alive."
Her voice! She was still here! I looked to Alice for some sort of recognition that Bella was alive in her visions, but there was still nothing. Nothing. But her voice sounded so real!
"Ava!"Alice had told Ava to go to Bella's home mere minutes ago, and she had tricked the likes of all of the family before while testing how far she could go with her power. The phone smashed to pieces in my hands, and Alice could not catch up to me despite how hard she tried.
I no longer cared. Bella truly was gone, and I was off to Volterra.
