Chapter 5: Maybe One Day

Max PoV

"Split up!" I yelled, "Girls base is past those trees, boy's is between the goal posts!" The Flock cheered.

I walked over to the grass dumping my bag as Gazzy ran past me, tapping my shoulder, "You're it!" He yelled.

I looked around, Fang was closest. He met my gaze and I grinned evilly at him. He gulped then spun on his heel and pelted away from me. I chased, catching him, and then darting away.

We all stopped and flipped a coin to see who would be chasing who. Angel got Gazzy. Iggy got Nudge. Fang got me.

If you were a chaser you had to get your prey to your base. if you were prey, you just had to get to your own base.

"Get your losing faces ready," I teased the boys.

"Ready," Nudge called, "Three, two, one, chase!"

We were off.

I came to a stop about fifteen minutes later. I looked around smiling. Everyone was having fun. Fang was it again, but he had gone invisible. I crept along the bushes ready for Fang to appear and catch me.

He leapt at me just as another car turned up into the car park. I ignored the car, there was no way in hell I was gonna let Fang catch me. I ran as fast as I could across the grass. The Flock was cheering, Nudge and Angel for me, Gazzy and Iggy for Fang. I just needed to make it across the pitch and into the trees and we would win!

"Max, come on! He's catching up!" Nudge screamed.

I was ten feet away from the trees when Fang tackled me.

I was knocked to the ground, Fang on top of me. The Flock's screams got louder.

"Come on Fang!" Gazzy yelled, "Get her into the goals and we win!"

"Over my dead body!" I shrieked, struggling to get away from Fang. I got out from under him and made a dash for the trees.

Fang wasn't going to give up that easily. He grabbed my arm and pulled me towards the goals, putting himself between me and the trees. I threw a roundhouse into his chest, hard enough to shatter a human's ribcage. He caught my foot and twisted my leg. I jumped, bringing my second leg up over the first, kicking his shoulder. I spun round twice, my arms crossed over my chest, my body perfectly straight, flat in the air at Fang's shoulder height.

He let go of my foot and fell back as I kicked his shoulder. I landed in a crouch then ran past him into the trees.

Angel and Nudge erupted into cheers. They ran over and slapped me high fives. I laughed at the boy's annoyed faces.

"That's what happens when you go against Maximum Ride," Nudge called to them. Gazzy stuck his tongue out at her.

I walked over to Fang. He was on his back, propped up on his elbows. I smiled down at him.

"You know Fang," I said conversationally, "If you keep working then maybe one day you'll be able to beat me," I smiled sweetly at him.

Suddenly a roaring laugh came from the edge of the grass. We all looked up, surprised. There were a load of people standing watching us. I vaguely remembered the cars pulling up as we were playing.

I looked at the guy who was laughing. He was big, muscled, pale and blond. He was standing in a group, slightly away from everyone else, with five other people.

"Alice!" Nudge screamed, still high from the game, "Bella!"

She ran over to the group grinning madly at two of the girls. The smaller of the two grinned back. She looked like a pixie.

"Hey," The guy who had laughed was standing in front of me. I looked at him and smiled, "I'm Emmett."

"Max"

"This," He pulled over a sulky looking girl. She would have been gorgeous if it wasn't for her expression, "Is Rosalie. That's Jasper, Edward," He pointed to each of them in turn and I smiled warmly at them all, "And you've already met Alice and Bella."

"I have?" I frowned.

Bella came to stand next to me. I looked at her mystified. I had never seen this girl before in my life. Fang smirked at my expression.

"You were out of it when we met them, they were house warming," Iggy explained.

"Oh," So these were the girls who saw the aftermath of my nightmare. I smiled nervously at them, "Sorry about the introduction," I said. They both grinned at me.

We were interrupted by the bell ringing. Alice led us to the office, talking non-stop with Nudge the whole way. Me and Fang exchanged glances, we were impressed. I dropped back to talk to Emmett.

"Does she always talk that fast?" I asked him.

"Yes, but no-one has ever been able to keep up with her before," He looked stunned. I laughed at his amazement.

Suddenly Bella, who was walking slightly behind me, tripped over something, falling into me. Normally that wouldn't matter, but we were at the top of the stairs outside the office. The very top. And I happened to be at the one bit that had no railing.
