Chapter 20: Betrayal
Rosalie's PoV
"Do you understand the plan?" Demetri asked yet again.
"Yes!" Rosalie hissed back at him. "For the millionth time!"
She didn't want reminding that she was bringing the famous Volturi, the vampire authority, down on her family. The man facing her, however, seemed all too keen to mention it as often as possible.
"Good. We set out at sunset. For Forks, Washington. This girl better be as special as you claim she is."
"Indeed she is incredible." A soft voice came from the door.
The two looked up. A pale man, with skin like a layer of white talcum powder, stood just inside the room. He glided towards the window, where the conversation was being held. Demetri stood quickly, tilting his head in a sign of respect.
"Everything is set up Aro. We set out as soon as the sun sets."
"Excellent. I cannot wait for this girl to join us. She seems almost too good to be true. Demetri, like you I would find it hard to believe if I had not seen it with my own eyes. Or rather with yours, my dear." He inclined his head towards the blonde. "Now if you'll excuse us, we have a few arrangements to see to."
As the eerily pale duo made their way to the door, Aro paused, his hand on the doorknob.
"I thank you for bringing us news of her. And of course, of Bella's progress..."
Or lack of it. The deadly four words hung in the air long after Aro's footsteps had disappeared from her vampire hearing.
Rosalie's pretty face twisted into an unattractive scowl as she watched the busy streets of Volterra through the heavily tinted window.
Sighing, she dropped her head into her hands. She was so far away from everything she knew. Everyone she knew. Everyone she loved. Everyone who loved her. Or at least used to.
By now Alice would have seen what she had done. How much danger she had put them all in. And all because she was jealous. Of a mortal.
Of Max.
Max. Normal Max. Pretty Max. Smart Max. Witty Max. Confident Max. Sporty Max. Loved Max.
Max who was the two things Rosalie wanted to be more than anything, yet couldn't ever be.
Human, and adored unconditionally by everyone she met.
It was obvious instantly that her family loved her. That was fine; Rosalie's family loved her. But Rosalie's family also loved her. Who did Max think she was? Barging into their lives, and expecting them all to fall at her feet.
I'm better than her in every way, Rosalie thought to herself, I'm immortal, stronger, smarter, more beautiful. Inhumanly beautiful.
But so was Max. There was something about her that seemed to draw humans towards her. They swarmed to her like bugs to a light.
What's so special about her? About Max? She thought the name with venom a Deathstalker scorpion would be proud of.
She was unnatural. Unnaturally strong, for example. What human could fall ten feet, and then punch a wall and come away completely unscathed? And before school even started, she was running around, faster than all the other puny humans at that school. Yet she was not even breathing hard.
She deserves everything she is going to get. Rosalie was extremely sure of that.
She just wasn't sure that her family deserved what would come along with Max's punishment.
Carlisle. He saved her when no one else would. When she was left, bleeding and ashamed in the middle of the street.
Esme. She cared for Rosalie as if they were mother and daughter. Accepting her for all her faults.
Alice and Jasper. They were like brother and sister to her. Always there for her when she most needed it, even if she didn't know it herself.
Edward. He let her in, even though he was completely and utterly against her in the beginning. He accepted her and help her grow, mature. She was hurting him the most; he was completely against Bella becoming a vampire. Bringing the Volturi to Forks meant Rosalie was basically biting Bella herself.
Bella. As much as Rosalie hated to admit it, Bella was part of their family. Bella wasn't actually too bad. But she was human. And she was going to give it all up. Something Rosalie just couldn't understand.
Emmett. Her stone-cold heart ached as she thought of how she was betraying him. Her love. When she looked at him, she could almost understand why Bella was throwing away her soul. Almost.
Still, when Max came, Rosalie was all but forgotten.
Emmett headed straight for her, making himself very chummly.
Rosalie's head snapped up and she held her chin high. They did deserve what was headed for them.
They were meant to be Rosalie's family. They were supposed to love Rosalie, but they had all fallen for Max. Dived right off a cliff.
I wish Max would take a running jump off a cliff. There was no guilt for her horrific thoughts about the girl.
Until, that is, she remembered Aro's unwelcome words.
"You are wasting your time with those so-called vampires. With your mind and beauty, you would be very welcome into the inner circle of the Volturi. Into the very Heart."
What heart? The Volturi had no hearts. They cared for others as much as their frozen hearts pumped blood round their rock-solid bodies.
Glancing out the window, Rosalie noticed the sun was almost hidden by the horizon. The sky was tinged pink, with streaks of blue and purple. She saw everything through her vampire eyes. It got quite annoying when dealing with humans.
She could see every single blackhead on their horribly imperfect skin, every hair on their upper lip, every germ in their house. Not that she had ever been in a mortal's house. Disgusting places. Going to school with them was bad enough.
Maybe she would take Aro up on his offer. She was fed up with mixing with people who didn't appreciate her full talent. People who make her throat burn, and want to vomit, if she could.
Yes. She was better than them. Better than Carlisle, Esme, Alice, Jasper, Edward, Emmett and Bella. And Max. Especially Max.
"They deserve everything they're going to get." She muttered.
With one look out at the sky, she headed to meet her new family. One insignificant thing hanging in the back of her mind.
It was Twilight.
