"ALPHA!" I roared down at him. "Itex Erasers, coming in fast!"
My trained eyes follow the two teams of eight coming in on foot. I wipe away the beads of sweat from my temple. Sixteen is good, we can handle sixteen. Below me I see the Pack scatter. We have the element of surprise and now we'll use it wisely. We may be 'obsolete' but at least we can think for our selves.
I let myself drift down, aiming for a branch on a ghostly gum tree that could support my weight. I land with ease and tuck in my wings immediately, crouching with my back against the whitish trunk of the gum. I glance over to where I knew Alpha was hiding; behind the rusted car body of an old Holden Commodore. He nods at me, before he disappears from view. I smirk. He's not telling me to be careful; he's telling me to be gentle.
I freeze my body and concentrate on blending into the trunk. After a few seconds I disappear. Understand that I don't become 'invisible', like from some horror movie. If you look closely enough, you will see my black eyes staring blankly back at you. And it'll probably be the last thing you ever see.
Years of honing my skill of camouflage has seen it come to a state of perfection. I can blend into the very sky above me for hours on end, and no one would know. I am a creature of solitude, but I wasn't always.
As I sat in this tree waiting tensely, I was reminded of the first time I camouflaged into a tree. Back then, I'd flown with a completely different group of mutants- the Flock.
I feel hungry, but I'm not complaining. I was comfortable, relaxed and surrounded by the murmuring of my flock. The arms of this huge oak held me and my family easily, with enough room to park a small plane in. Or maybe an angry fighter jet that'd just sped in to protect the Pentagon… from us.
I let out a satisfied sigh and lent back into the trunk, closing my eyes gently.
"Where's Fang?" I open my eyes and blink at Max. Like in all my memories, she looks like an angel. The way the moonlight illuminates her golden hair; her beautiful eyes, a mask to the real emotions that only I could see behind-
"I'm right here," I say in surprise. She looks around at me and blinks in confusion.
"I looked- you weren't there." I raise my eyebrows. Is this a joke?
"Yes, I was," I answer, noticing the rest of the Flock are now watching me intensely.
"No," I hear Nudge pipe up, frowning at me. "I looked for you too. Were you behind the tree?"
"I was right here!" I insist, waving my arms for good measure.
Everyone frowned at me in confusion. Well, this was new.
I smiled gently as I drifted out of my memory. I hear a snap of a twig and I'm pulled back to reality. Below me two Easers wearing desert camouflage gear are closing in on the old petrol station.
Behind, the Pack are closing in on them.
As I look down at them, I am reminded of who took away my old life; my life with the Flock. The anger is building again. They took me. My heart is racing now; my mind is raging. My dark passenger is demanding to be let loose. They changed me.
They Erasified me. My eyes widen.
I feel it taking over. I open my mouth to groan in pain and two long canine teeth protrude out of my gums, shining in the sunlight. The muscles on my back ripple painfully, growing and tightening the shirt around my chest. I consider ripping the shirt off, but more pain hits my hands and my feat. As I flex my fingers, long razor sharp claws grow over my human nails. The muscles in my arms, legs, chest and back are now five times as strong as they were, and I am ready to use them.
The two Erasers, who'd been watching me with some fascination from below suddenly realized that they could be in danger. I am not a normal looking Eraser. I have no wolf muzzle, nor any fur. I smirk slightly, wondering what they must be thinking.
Blood from my gums drip down onto my lips and I lick it up hungrily.
"Hello boys," I growled in my gruff Eraser voice, grinning at them wickedly.
"Miss me?"
