I open my mouth to ask, but catch myself before the words form. If I could recognize their voices so easily, it would probably be just as easy for them- especially for Iggy and Total with their enhanced hearing. As much as I want for them to recognize me, to know I am here with them; I can never allow it to happen.

I can't be with them; I am dangerous, I remind myself dismally as I close my mouth again.

"Who is it, Ami?" Kith hisses out in concern. Amity's glare never wavers, and she ignores him. I try to think fast. That voice; so familiar. So smooth, yet it sounded on edge, jittery almost. It had the edge of fear that most Erasers picked up on easily.

It reeks of weakness, my inner wolf growls at me. And with that thought it suddenly clicks.

"Take him to the holding cell; next to his beloved 'family'." The Directors voice comes so clearly into my mind that I have to stare around just to be sure that the old man isn't standing outside my cell.

The dark-haired avian from the interrogation room; it has to be! But then, how does the Gasman know him? Did the rest of the Flock know him as well? And, what exactly did the Director mean by his family? I suck in a deep breath to calm myself; you're getting ahead of yourself, I think evenly.

"Working as the enemy's homing pigeon really took you places, huh?" Amity sneers, sarcasm dripping from her voice.

There is a heavy gulp from the cell next door, and it is silent for a few moments. The tension in the room is heavy, although I'm sure only I can feel it. When the avian replies next, I get the confirmation I need.

"Oh… it's you," comes the nervous reply from the cell next to mine.

"Oh it's me alright, avian! I knew I'd recognised you back in the plane hanger! So, you're the one we have to thank for being in this mess!" Amity growls furiously, slamming her palms into the bars to emphasise the mess part.

"Amity, who is it?" Kith asks desperately, momentarily forgetting to use her alias.

"Remember experiment 0551, Echo? Lightweight with the grey down?" she growls back, eyes ablaze. I hear Kith growl, before spitting on the floor in disgust. Back up! Rewind! Can anyone else say 'huh?' They know this guy? Am I missing something here? Does everyone but me know who he is?

The thought that I'm missing something here frustrates me more, and I feel an unpleasant shiver run down my spine. Pup is watching me from his position by the bars, and I concentrate on keeping calm again.

"Echo…" Kith growls in a low voice. "See you made it out of Montana alive. Guess kissing the Directors arse really did save your feathery hide in the end."

That made some cosmic sense to me- the Montana bit anyway. Itexicon Institute Montana, was the laboratory Kith and Amity were created in. Along with Jet, Alpha, Aiko, Letty, Nemo and Hunter, the team of eight had only just managed to escape the base with their lives. The day after their escape, the facility mysteriously burnt to the ground, killing all the buildings occupants- namely, the one hundred and fifty lupine hybrids residing inside.

"Eck, what's he talking about? Do you know those Erasers?" Nudge asks quickly, sounding about as confused as I feel.

"Um… yeah. We, uh, come from the same laboratory… in Montana," the avian, Echo, replies attentively. I note vaguely, that he hasn't mentioned anything about Kith's arse kissing comment. Thankfully, I wasn't the only one.

"What'd he mean by 'kissing the Directors arse'?" Iggy asks slowly. I smile to myself; good on you, Ig! I glance up at Amity who is now sending pointed looks into Echo and Gazzy's cell.

"Oh…I…uh, well, I was kind of… forced to 'cooperate'with some of the whitecoats-"

"Bull! They told you to jump and you asked how high! You were practically licking the boots of authority from the day you crawled out of that sorry looking test tube!" Kith roars from his cell.

"I don't have to answer to you, dog breath!" Echo shouts defensively.

"LIKE HELL YOU DON'T!" Kith bellows back. I hear a loud thud, and imagine that the stone wall of his cell now carries a Kith fist shaped dent. I'm sure he is close to morphing and we can't afford for him to lose it now. Amity and I share a glance and she understands the warning in my eyes.

"Kith. Cool it, hun. The guards will hear you," she whispers in a voice so low that I'm sure only us Erasers, heard it at all.

As if on cue, the door to the holding cells slide open and light pours into our dank prison.

"Cool it down in there, dog!" our guard shouts from somewhere around Kith and Total's cell. I hear a shuffle of feet, and the same gruff voice mutters, "the Avians are in three, four and five. Is there anything else I can get you, ma'am?"

"No, thankyou. I think I can take it from here," came a beautiful, self-assured voice that makes my ears prick up and forces me to glance past the cell bars. Suddenly, there is a scuffle of feet and a muffled series of cries, followed by a long agonising silent. I stand slowly, my heart pounding in my throat; my inner wolf now growling, danger!

There is a heavy 'thump', like a body falling to the floor, and someone is panting heavily. My mind is brought unwillingly back to the blank eyes of the Eraser I'd terminated back in the Australian desert. I wonder briefly if the same fate had befallen our guard. My grim thoughts are interrupted by the same confident voice.

"Sheesh, guys! Ever tried not getting caught?" the gorgeous voice says sarcastically. My mouth drops and my heart speeds up to a painful rate. I feel a cold shiver ripple over my skin, and I mouth the same name as it leaves Angels mouth in the form of a shout.

"Max!"
