Disappearance
Zuko's POV
"Yo Sparky they're here." Toph called from around the door.
I took a deep breath before straightening my jacket and waiting for them to walk through the door. Toph and I made eye contact, knowing that this wasn't what we wanted happening but, needed to be done.
Mai walked through past Toph with an overconfident smile plastered onto her face. Her father was right behind her watching me with a knowing smile which bothered me to no end. Beside me was a doctor that both of us had agreed on meeting and giving DNA samples to. Mai blushed, tucking a strand of her hair behind her ear. "Good morning Zuko. I've missed seeing you."
I gripped my chair to keep my composure before I did something that would get me into trouble. "I'm afraid the feeling isn't mutual. Dr. Johnson what do you need from us?"
"Well we were going to give a pregnancy test to Ms. Lou, but it looks like that is unnecessary. So, instead I will just take a sample of each of your DNA and when Ms. Lou comes in for her check up, I will be able to determine if Mr. Azulon is or is not the father of your child."
"Even though I know that he is? Zuko why do you not believe me when it was you I was last with?"
I bit the inside of my cheek, "Mai I'm done with your bullshitting. It's been months and you are what? 3 months along? It isn't mine."
She sighed sadly and her father placed a comforting hand on her leg. "Zuko I don't know your private life. However, if you are the father of my daughters child you WILL take responsibility."
"If it is my child I will provide for the child. Not her, not you, and I will most definitely not abandon my own kid. If it is mine I will also do anything I can to be the best father." I turned to Dr. Johnson to stop myself from screaming out my anger. "How soon can I get these results?"
"In a few days Mr. Azulon. We will run multiple ones and provide the paperwork to you and Ms. Lou so that nothing can be misinterpreted." He said confidently.
I nodded before settling back into my chair. "Thank you."
We followed Dr. Johnson's instructions for providing him with our DNA before he packed everything up carefully and left. I waited for Mai to leave but only her father left, giving me a dirty look before heading out of the door. I shook my head before taking out my papers and started working, hoping that she would take the hint and leave.
"Zuko."
I sighed heavily, "We've just met with the doctor. I don't know what else you want from me Mai, you can leave now."
"Why are you being so cold to me?" She asked quietly.
I dropped my pen and laughed. "Are you really fucking asking me that right now?"
Her eyes seemed to widen in surprise at my sudden use of profanity. "I-I'm just curious. I didn't ask to get pregnant Zuko."
"I don't care. We are over and it's obvious you are hoping for something just because you're pregnant. Once these results come back out that it's not my child I don't want anything to do with you."
"Are you irritable because Katara isn't here?"
I wanted to throw her out at that very moment but getting riled up right now wasn't going to help the situation. "She's none of your fucking business. Like I said before Mai we are done. Get out."
She sighed dramatically before reaching over and placing her hand against my cheek. Almost immediately I recoiled, putting distance between us. "Zuko, if you ever need. Comforting, you have my number…"
"I have it blocked and deleted. I'd rather die than spend a second of my time with you in any setting. We are only here because of your pregnancy. If it was any other situation I would have had you hauled out of here in seconds. Now get. Out." I finished sternly.
She stayed seated for a few more seconds before sighing once more and collecting her things and stood up to leave. "Zuko, I don't mean to anger you. But if Katara is smart she won't be involved with a man whose had a child with his ex. I don't care what has happened in the past, you can always come back to me. Never forget that."
"Sorry I didn't hear a word from your mouth. The only things I took note of is that multiple times to leave and you're still here."
Mai rolled her eyes and walked out of the room and when the door closed I let the extra stress float away. Leaning back into my chair I closed my eyes, breathing in deeply until I felt calm enough to continue my work. With this new expansion I had way more on my plate than I used to have and adding all this wasn't helping.
I heard the door open again, noticing Toph walking in. "I see they finally left."
"I don't know how I deal with this. No wonder Katara left…"
"Hey don't talk like that! Katara didn't leave you because she couldn't deal with you. Stop thinking about stupid shit like that."
It had been a week since Katara left. No one knew where she was or if they did they wouldn't tell me. Sokka was completely clueless and so was Suki. I even called her father asking if she was with them but, he just told me to 'give her space'. I didn't know if that was a subtle hint at her being with them and a warning not to come get her, or if he just didn't know where she was either. Regardless, I was starting to feel like shit. I could understand one or two days, but a week was pushing it. I knew that being around all this stress was hard on her, but it was hard on me not knowing where she was. "I know Toph, I know. It's just..really hard. With Jet out there god knows what's happened to her."
"She's not stupid Sparky. She wouldn't go anywhere alone. She wouldn't do that.. Just figure this shit out with that bitch so you two can get married and live happily ever after. Its pissing me off too."
I chuckled at her outburst and nodded in agreement. "I will Toph, I promise this will be done soon."
Katara's POV
"Sorry for being here so long mom." I said holding her in my arms.
"You're alright dear. I trust that you will be able to get through this. Zuko must be sick with worry."
I smiled sadly. "I know, I didn't expect to stay for so long but, Toph told me that they are doing a DNA test and should know in a few days. I can't stay any longer, it was wrong of me to even have stayed this long."
She kissed my head before letting me walk outside the door. "Everything will work out in the end. Oh, and please go see a doctor if you feel any worse okay?"
"I will I promise."
"Okay Katara I love you. Come home whenever you want okay?"
I smiled and waved before starting my car and leaving back to the apartment. Leaving my mother was heartbreaking. She had taken the week off just to spend time with me, and then halfway through the week I was feeling lethargic and out of it. I wasn't sure why, but the unease of being sick with stress was eating away at my mind. I arrived at the apartment in no time and noticed that it was just how I left it. Zuko hadn't left it a mess or destroyed anything for that matter, which made me feel relieved that he was probably taking care of himself. At least I hoped he was.
I turned around and grabbed my keys to head back out. I was gone for a week and we had a fight just before. So I headed out to get some stuff from the grocery store that I needed to make a decent meal.
I arrived at the local store and began shopping around, grabbing spices to help add that kick to the pasta I was planning to make. I smiled to myself thinking about how much Zuko liked spicy dishes. I grabbed a bottle of wine as well before heading to the checkout when a uneasy feeling hit my gut. It wasn't like the sickness I had felt during the week but rather an ominous gut feeling. I looked around and noticed nothing out of the norm.
"Hi were you able to find everything alright miss?" The cashier asked. I snapped out of it quickly.
I smiled kindly to him and nodded, "Yes thank you."
"Paper or plastic bags ma'am?"
"Paper please."
With two bags in my hand I walked back out to my car and popped them into the trunk. Sighing I closed it and shuddered in fear.
Jet stood behind me.
I could see him from the reflection off of the back window watching me. My heart hammered in my chest and my breathing accelerated. Quickly I spun around to get away from him when his hand grabbed my wrist. "Finally."
Fear wracked through my body. In these situations what do you do? What can you do when you have no chance at escaping and time seems to have stopped for everyone but you. I trembled thinking of the only thing I could do.
"HELP! Someone help me!"
"Wh-Katara shut up!"
"Help! Help me please!" Not one person seemed to move. It was like I wasn't loud enough. Or I was invisible…
"Damnit!" He grabbed my mouth placing a white cloth to my face. I struggled as much as I could before I felt all my strength leave me and my eyes grow heavy with drowsiness. With the last of my strength I glared at Jet before I closed my eyes.
Succumbing to the darkness.
