Letty couldn't spend one more second of her morning in that hotel room. She pulled on some jeans and a tight tee shirt and made her way out to the streets on Rio.
There were people everywhere. Musicians and entertainers on every stretch of pavement. Vendors and food carts in every crevice of space.
Letty stopped for a snack, realizing that she hadn't eaten since she landed here last night. All the smells had reminded her that she was starved for more than just Dom.
As she wandered through the streets in a state of euphoria she wondered about Dom's ability to really find her. It was early in the morning and the streets were packed. Tonight would be completely insane.
She walked until she made her way to the crowded beach and watched the people around her from the sand.
Letty wanted to tell Dom about her year, to hear about his and to hear what was next for them. She trusted him to make this year apart worth her while.
She wanted to hear about Mia and Vince, maybe they could see him while they were here. I wanted to know how much Brian had told them about everything she had been up to.
The last she'd seen Brian, he was pretending he was a good guy and pining away for Mia. He had come to the house late one night talk to her. As they sat in his car, he couldn't stop glancing up at Mia's window.
Letty honestly hoped that Brian had gotten his shit together and that Mia had given him another chance. They were both a mess and they needed to get it together.
She was one to call someone else's relationship a mess. She chuckled to herself.
Dom rode in the car beside Elena to her family home. The ride was slow going with all the traffic on the roads. It would have been faster to walk and Elena was seriously considering it.
"It's not like anything else in the world," she says with a smile and takes his hand. She was really excited to show him more of Rio.
"So I hear," he replies distantly. He sits staring out the window and not seeing anything there.
Elena glances away from the road and looks at Dominic. She squeezes his hand in hers and rubs her thumb across the back of his hand.
"Tell me what's on your mind Dom," she says.
"Letty." Dom answers shortly and Elena nods. She'd known the answer.
"Something specific or just in general," she asks.
Dom turns around and looks at her and then back out the window. "I was supposed to meet her here today. We arranged it when she split up in the Dominican."
Elena's hand flies to her mouth as she tries to stifle the gasp that escapes.
"I'm sorry Dom! I had no idea."
Dom shakes his head at her apology. The words did nothing for the pain he was feeling. He couldn't stop thinking about what he would do to be meeting her here. Would he be searching the streets looking for her smirk? Or meeting her in a spot they had picked out?
When she died did she know how much he loved her?
It was a question that haunted him. In her last moments of life did she doubt him? Had he done enough so that she knew?
Ten months and Two Weeks Ago
Brian O'Connor sat in the park on a bench eating a burger and waiting. He took a bite and swallowed and looked around one more time. He couldn't believe this meeting was actually taking place.
Letty walked up silently and took a seat next to Brian and stared straight ahead.
"O'Conner."
Brian looks at her profile and then back out to the pond of birds drifting along peacefully. He couldn't get over the fact that she wasn't the carefree Letty he'd known. She seemed to be carrying much more than her share.
How much of that was his fault?
He wanted to ask about Dom, but could never bring himself to do it.
"Letty. Hi. I was surprised when you called."
Letty turns to him suddenly and rests an elbow on the back of the bench. She looks him over for a moment before speaking.
"Thanks for getting me in touch with who I need." Letty says, very seriously.
"No problem," Brian answers. "My boss can use you right away. They want to know how this guy Braga is getting his drugs into the country. Who's helping him and all. You're a miracle to him right now."
"Not for long," she cracks with a smirk. "He's going to wish he never met me."
Letty knew all about Braga and was already making her way into his organization. He wanted drivers to bring in his product without knowing what they were running. She was a driver who seemed money hungry enough to do it. That part was a done deal.
"He'll never know what you're up to for Internal Affairs."
Letty laughs, "They are really interested in information on you O'Connor. They think you're going to slip up again. That you already have, actually."
Brian's face goes serious. "Nope. I know where my loyalties lie now. I messed up and I'm lucky to have a career."
Letty isn't buying the act he was selling.
"Alright O'Connor, you hold on to that career of yours. Dozens of dirty cops are worth Dom's weight in gold around there, so I can keep them off your ass for now. Just don't do anything stupid. You are under a microscope."
Letty stands to leave and Brian cups her wrist before she gets away. "Watch your back Letty. Dom wouldn't want anything to happen to you. I don't either. We were friends once."
"I don't want anything to happen to Dom. That's why I want the target off his back." Letty looks at Brian. "As far as you and I go, we're friends now."
Letty turns and walks out of the park just as quietly and unnoticed as she entered it. Brian waits a few minutes and leaves too.
They didn't want to alert the guys in Brian's team that they were being watched. Internal Affairs didn't want Brian to know that he wasn't 100% in the clear. So it was best they kept their unofficial meetings short and discreet.
