Chapter Two

"So where are we headed?" Nico asks his sister as they pull out of the parking lot. "Back to New York?"

"Not yet," Bianca says. "I want to take a look at the place where Percy finished his quest. It might have some clues."

"Okay," Nico agrees. "And where's that?"

"Jericho, California," Bianca replies, polishing her dagger to avoid looking him in the eye.

Nico frowns. "Jericho?" he repeats, glancing over at her. "Percy was on a quest less than three hours away from me, and you didn't tell me?"

"Would you have wanted to know?" Bianca counters.

Nico returns his attention to the road, not satisfying his sister with an answer.

"So what was the quest?" he asks instead. "What was he doing in Roman territory if he wasn't in the Underworld?"

Bianca shakes her head. "It was just one of those stupid things that the gods think up when they're bored- you know, go to monster country and find, like, a Greek rock or something that Zeus wants for his collection."

Nico raises an eyebrow at her. "Seriously?"

She shrugs. "I mean, I wasn't given details, I just kind of assumed."

Nico rolls his eyes. "All right, well, we might as well ask around the town, just see if anyone saw him."

Bianca nods. "Good. Glad we have a plan."

They've barely been on the road for an hour when Bianca finally brings up the topic that Nico has been dreading.

"So... Jesse."

Nico curses under his breath. "I was hoping you wouldn't ask."

Bianca rolls her eyes. "Nico. You've had nineteen girlfriends since you were fifteen. I show up in your college dorm room and you're sleeping with a guy? How could I not ask?"

Nico tightens his grip on the steering wheel. "Bianca, I told you I liked boys a long time ago."

"No, you told me you liked Percy," Bianca protests. "That's a completely different thing because everyone likes Percy."

Nico sighs, shaking his head. "Whatever. My personal life is none of your business anyway."

Bianca scoffs. "Right. Okay. I guess you're right."

Nico nods, and avoids her gaze, and focuses on driving.

The rest of the ride to Jericho is silent.

They arrive in the small town of Jericho and Nico rents them a motel room while Bianca follows her leads. Nico almost immediately regrets letting her go off on her own, but then he remembers the fight they had and decides that she can take care of herself.

He opens his suitcase, once he's alone in the motel room, and pulls out the spray bottle he hasn't used in years. He makes a rainbow and pulls a drachma out of his pocket. He hesitates for a moment, turning the coin over in his hand. Then he steels his nerves and tosses the coin into the mist.

"Oh Iris, goddess of the rainbow, show me Percy Jackson."

The mist clears, the rainbow dissipating, and then the drachma falls out, clattering onto the floor.

Nico sighs. "Of course."
