This beautiful bundle of joy was so small yet so full of life and Emily couldn't believe she had a hand in creating her. She was the epitome of perfection. Emily now knew what had been missing these past few months and that was her daughter, her role of a mother, to protect and nurture. It had been days since all of her memories came flooding back and each day she spent time with Amelia. It's the Saturday after she returned home that she woke up late in the morning. She pats the spot next to her and felt the cold sheets and missed Alison's warmth. They'd been sleeping in the same bed since she came home and woke up every day together.
She got up slowly, not taking the cloth off her eyes before pushing the glasses on her face. She grabbed her cane and began walking. She gripped the staircase as she walked down each step and began to smell the breakfast.
"Hey Emily," her mom says rushing over to her.
"I've got it mom, where's Ali?" she asks.
"Oh, she went out with the girls, I gave her the day off to relax, she's been with you everyday in and out of the hospital that it was a well deserved break," she rambles.
"Okay," she responds quietly before sitting at the island counter. "What are you making?" she asks.
"Bacon, eggs, home fries, French toast, and I'm having Danny bring over your Americano coffee," she says.
"Ooh sounds delicious, is he bringing Amelia?" she asks.
"Yes, they should be here any minute now," she responds before going back to cooking.
"I come baring gifts," she hears Danny say as he enters the house.
"Hey Danny," she says to him and he kisses her on the cheek. "Where's my little girl?"
"She is right here, waiting for her mama," he says. "Here let me," he takes Amelia out of the ergo and places her in her mother's arms. "Do you want me to remove the cloth?" he asks softly and she nods. He takes off the glasses and lifts the cloth and Emily blinks for a few minutes, her eyes adjusting to the light and she looks down and she can see her baby clear as day.
"Oh my God Danny, she's so beautiful," she says excitedly with tears flowing down her face.
"What? You can-can you see her?" he asks.
"Yes, clear as day," she smiles back up at him and feels his gruff beard that he's started to let grow a little. She looks beyond him and notices that she can't see too far though. "I can't see beyond 20 feet though".
"That's amazing Em, I'm so happy," he smiles at her and her mom wraps her and Amelia in a hug.
"Here, eat up while I hold my grandchild," she says giving Emily the look that she needs to catch up on all that she's missed since she wasn't informed and Emily hands her right over. After finishing her meal she looks over to see Danny staring at her.
"What? Do I have something on my face?" she asks and he chuckles while shaking his head.
"No, I just thought I lost you there for a minute and I'm so glad you're back. I wouldn't know what to do if you left me," he says and a silent tear leaves his eye.
"Hey Danny, I'm not going anywhere," she brings him into a hug.
"These last few months have been life changing and eye opening and I spoke with my father and I told him that I'm not ready to walk away from Amelia because I've already grown attached and…and what I'm trying to say is that I want to be there for her and for you. I want us to be a family," he says strongly.
"But Danny, I thought you wanted to be like an uncle or something," she says slightly confused.
"I did, but now I know I wasn't put on this earth for anything greater than to be that little girl's father and I want to try and be the best dad I can be," he says more sure of his words.
"Wow," Emily says not believing what she's hearing. The past year and a half she's been setting herself up to be a single parent and now she finds out that she won't have to go through this alone.
"Say something. Are you angry? Happy? What?" he demands.
"I'm in shock to say the least, but if its what you want, then I guess we'll have to work it out," she says and he nods.
"Em are you mad because I changed my decision or because you planned on raising her with Alison?" he asks.
"I'm not mad Danny, I've just been planning to raise her as a single parent and then you change your mind and it's thrown me for a loop. I mean how can I trust that you won't go back on your decision? And as far as Alison goes, she has nothing to do with Amelia and your relationship with your daughter," she defends herself.
"I promise you Em, I'm in it forever, I want to be her father," he says seriously.
"You're already her father," she says softly. "You're a natural, but what's going to happen with your dad's business?"
"Well I'm still going to take it after he 'retires'," he says and looks nervously in Emily's direction hoping it wouldn't change her decision.
"Okay, but my number one rule is absolutely no talks of business around her, and her safety comes first," she says sternly and he nods furiously.
"Of course she's my number one priority," he agrees instantly.
"Now, living arrangements, what do you want?" she asks.
"Can we live together?" he slightly jokes even though its something he's always wanted since their little girl was born. "On a serious note, Amelia will be staying with you and I'll visit on weekends and take her for a few weeks in the summers. What about when you go to college, who will take her?" he asks.
"Well I'm going to need to get an apartment wherever I go and hopefully they have daycare," she says.
"Okay, I can pay for the apartment and hire a nanny," he says and she shakes her head. "No room for discussion, I will not have you and especially not my daughter staying in a run down apartment building in a new city. I'll visit wherever you are, it just may not be as often, but you'll come home for summer break right?" he asks.
"Yeah, we're coming home every break to visit family and friends," she says.
"Okay good, then our summer arrangement can remain the same," he says.
"I think it's settled then," she smiles at him.
"I told you Em, you two are the most important people in my life and I won't have anything happen to you. I'm here forever," he says playing with the necklace he'd given her.
"I know you are Danny," she smiles at him and he squeezes her cheek, but the door opening and the girls bounding in with bags interrupt them. "Go along with me," she says and he gives a slight nod. He picks up a big piece of French toast.
"Open up Em," he says and stuffs it in her mouth and she glares at him.
"Thank you," she says with a full mouth.
"Hey guys," Alison says after putting her bags down.
"Hey!" the girls say following after her.
"Alison, could you come here?" Emily asks.
"Sure," she says walks closer and Emily wraps her in a kiss before pulling away and staring into her eyes so much that it scares Alison. "So beautiful, I've missed those big blue eyes," she says and Alison looks in shock.
"What?" Alison asks pulling back slightly.
"I said I've missed those big blue eyes," she repeats.
"You can see them?" Alison asks hesitantly.
"I can see, not very far, but yes I can see you and I saw my little girl and she's so beautiful," Emily lets out a laugh and cry.
"That's great Em!" the girls say coming to give her a hug.
"Emily, she's hungry," my mom says coming to hand Amelia to me. Emily wraps her in her arms and pulls down her shirt slightly and she has no trouble finding what she wants as the other hand rests against Emily's breast. She looks down to see her eyes staring back at me.
"God she's so beautiful," Hanna comments and she nod excitedly and see a tear appear on her temple without realizing she was crying.
"She is, she is so beautiful. And I gave life to her," Emily says staring at her and hears Danny clear his throat. "Well you helped of course, but I did all the heavy lifting, for 9 months and 10 days to be exact," she says and everyone chuckles.
"God if that wasn't your kid I'd think Alison had a hand in creating her, have you seen her eyes and hair?" Hanna says and we all look a little closely. Her hair is the same golden blonde that Alison has and they're already forming into perfect curls, and man those are deep ocean orbs. Emily looks at hers moves her head back up to Alison and looks deep into her eyes and they're almost identical.
"Yeah, that's weird, my mom's are like a cobalt blue and her hair is sandy blonde, you must have strong genes Alison," he smiles at her and in that moment, Emily knew that they would make it work.
"So I have news," Emily speaks to Amelia as if she could understand. "It looks like your daddy is staying around for a while. He's not going anywhere little munchkin," she says while one of Danny's fingers caress the little cheek and she lets out a wail once she's done eating. "I think she wants her papa," Emily says pulling the shirt up and she sees unshed tears in his eyes before handing her off to him. He already has a blanket over his shoulder as they watch him expertly bounce and burp her.
"You were so small that I thought I would break you," he speaks to break the silence but no one says anything to stop him from talking. "You had this smile like your mother that would light up a room, and they expressive eyes that showed every emotion, something you also get from her. She placed you in my arms and I swear my heart leapt out of my chest at the amount of love I could have for this one person, this tiny human being that I'd created. I knew my purpose to live would be solely for you, my princess," he says and everyone hears a light snore and knows she's down for the count.
"So how do you feel about him staying in her life as her father?" Alison asks her later on that night while they're sitting on the porch.
"I mean at first I was in shock, but as it grew on me I realized that some of my happiest memories are with my dad, and I never want to be the reason that she grows up without a parent," she explains and Alison nods.
"So how is it going to work out?" she asks.
"Well she's going to live with me and he's going to visit on the weekends and have her for a few weeks during the summers. When I go away to college he's going to buy an apartment and he'll visit, but not as often, but when I come home for the summers we'll follow the same schedule," she says.
"Okay," Alison says but Emily knows she's holding back.
"What is it Ali?" Emily asks.
"Nothing," Alison says quietly.
"I know you're not saying something, just spit it out," Emily pushes.
"I just wanted to know my place in her life, in your life," she says softly.
"Well you're my girlfriend and as for Amelia, I just want Danny and I to parent her, I mean I just got her back and I haven't even made it a full month of being her mom…." She rambles but Alison stops her.
"Hey, I never want to come in between her relationship with you guys, ever, and you've always been her mom," she smiles at Emily and holds her hand tightly.
"Thanks for understanding," Emily says.
"What are girlfriends for?" her smile widens at the use of the title. "So does this mean we're exclusive?"
"You mean I can't date other girls now?" Emily asks sarcastically but Alison misses the joke.
"You-you want to date other girls?" Alison asks with wide eyes before cooling her expression. "I mean if that's what you want, I guess we can do that," she says and looks down.
"Hey Ali, I was just being sarcastic, I don't want any other person but you," she brings their joined hands to her lips and kisses Alison's hand.
"Good because I was going to have to murder ever girl that you looked at," she says with a hint of the old Ali coming back, but it was a part that Emily had missed, her jealousy and protectiveness.
"As much as I'd like conjugal visits…" Emily trails off and leaves the air open for them to chuckle at the thought of Alison in a jumpsuit and they both shudder.
"Orange is so not my color," she remarks.
"Every color is your color babe," she smiles at her.
"Well played," Alison raises her eyebrows.
"What can I say, I'm a master," Emily descends the steps and bows in front of Alison like a knight.
"Knight in shining armor," Alison whispers to herself as her eyes rake over Emily up and down.
