I wake up, curled up on Derek's couch by myself. I pull myself up to find the sun shining through the window, the sun high in the sky. It's early afternoon.
"Hey" I turn towards the voice to find Derek.
"Hey, why'd you let me sleep in so much?" I ask him.
"Because you needed it" he says, walking over. He sits down next to me. "I can see your tired, I can smell it on you"
"I'm fine" I brush it off.
"You can't lie to me anymore Ash. Not when you're human" he says softly. I sigh.
"I'm not going back to sleep" I tell him.
"I didn't think you would" he chuckles. "Let me drive you home. Your brother will be home from school soon"
"Okay" I nod. We both get up. I pick up the bag of weapons from Allison. Derek's hand slips into my spare hand and I smile. He leads me down to his car, both of us getting in.
..
We hear banging and crashing from inside. We both rush to get out.
"Ash, take the car, get out of here" Derek tells me.
"I don't think so" I say, drawing my katana and getting out.
"Ash!" Derek yells but I ignore him, running inside. I see Mum dragging Dad away, blood soaking his shirt. Scott and Kira turn to me as I run in, Derek running in beside me. He wolfs out, growling at the Oni now holding up it's sword. He stabbed my Dad. My Dad who's back in town..crap. Derek and Scott both run at the Oni.
"Mum! The ash!" Scott yells. Oni materialize next to Kira but the twins are jumping through the window before I can reach her.
"Ashlee! The ash!" Mum yells to me. I'm human now, I can do it. I duck Kira under the counter and out of the way of the fighting. I run over and grab the jar.
"Now! Do it now!" Scott tells me. Derek grabs the last Oni, throwing it out the door. I throw the jar of mountain ash down at the door's edge. It smashes and closes the barrier. The Oni can't get in. Derek grabs my arm softly, pulling me away from them.
"You okay?" he asks me.
"I'm fine, are you?" I ask. He nods. I see Kira bring her hand up to the barrier..her hands blown back. "Derek.." I say, turning him towards her.
"Scott!" Mum calls out. She sounds on the verge of tears. I don't wanna go in there..my father might not make it through the night. As disturbing as it is to say..I have mixed feelings about that.
"Kira, right? What are you?" Aiden asks Kira, stepping towards her threateningly. Derek's eyes flash blue and back again. He walks over to them.
"She's a kitsune idiot" Derek tells them. A fox? "Use your eyes, you can see it all around her. The younger ones give off an aura, she just hasn't learnt how to conceal it yet. Probably doesn't know what kind she is either" Derek says, talking more to Kira. Kira looks down.
"Hey, you two. Back off" I say to the twins, moving towards Kira. Aiden eyes Kira for a few more seconds before walking away.
"Thanks" Kira whispers.
"They won't hurt you" I assure her. I can tell she's confused, maybe even scared of what she is. Scott comes over and I let him take her away to talk. I go back over to here Derek's talking to the twins, more so scowling them.
"Why do you think we're here Derek?" Aiden asks him. "For study group?"
"Maybe you don't have a pack so now you've come crawling back to Scott" I say, standing next to Derek. Aiden's eyes fall to me angrily. I'm not scared of him. I may be human but i'd still kill him after what he did to Boyd.
"We're here to protect Scott actually" Aiden says, staring at me. "You know, your cousin" he sneers. I go to growl but nothing comes out. Dammit.
"We're trying to fight for him" Ethan adds.
"I'm sure you are, i'm sure you'd kill for him" Derek says. "But are you willing to die for him?" he asks them, eyes studying both males. They share a look.
"Are you saying you are?" Aiden asks him. I step forward, not liking the challenge in his tone. Derek catches my arm, stepping in front of me.
"I'd die for Scott, i'd die for her as well" Derek says, motioning to me. By the slight widing of Aiden's eyes, he's suprised Derek said that. I am a little too but I know when Derek cares about someone, he does everything to keep them safe. Scott told me that.
"And you?" Aiden asks me. Derek growls. I stop him from stepping forward this time. Me dying isn't something he likes to talk about..especially when I already did die for the pack.
"I'd die again. I'd die for anyone in my brother's pack" I tell them honestly. Both males study me for a second before walking away. Then the house starts to shake, the Oni are trying to get in. Scott comes over to us.
"It's okay, don't do anything" he tells us.
"Scott?" I ask, stepping away from the Oni.
"It's okay, I promise" Scott assures me. I see him take Kira's hand. Derek brings an arm around me as the Oni break the barrier and step inside.
"Scott" Derek says, eyes darting between the Oni approaching us.
"Don't do anything" he orders. I watch as he steps up to the Oni with Kira.
"Wait, Scott!" I yell, moving to grab him.
"No, don't" Derek says, wrapping his arms around me so I can't move. They grab Scott and Kira, bringing them to their knees. "It's okay" Derek says. Then the Oni stare into their eyes with firefly like yellow eyes, both teenagers dropping to the floor. Derek lets me go and I run down to Scott.
"Scott? Scott?" I say, shaking him. His eyes are open but he's not moving. Something grabs me and I try to push them away. I look up and i'm instantly in a trance, my eyes glued to the yellow eyes of the Oni. I can hear Derek growling at them but someone's stopping him from getting to me. My whole body's frozen and I feel a burning behind my ear. Next thing I know, i'm falling down beside Scott. I see Derek rip himself away from the twins, rushing over to me. I try to reach out for Scott but i'm so cold. I'm shivering like crazy.
"Ash" Derek says, his warm hands coming to my arms. "You'll be okay" he promises me, his voice echoing.
"We have to get them warm" Ethan says. I'm lifted up, probably by Derek. Warmth surrounds me and I sink into his arms. Derek rubs my arms with his hands, warmth radiating off them. After a few minutes, I see Scott gets up, Kira too.
"Why is she not okay yet?" Derek asks, looking down at me.
"She's human, it's gonna take a little more for her" Scott says. Scott crotches down in front of me. "I gotta go get Dad to the hospital" he tells me. I nod, still shivering. "You stay here with Derek and get warm okay? I'll be back as soon as I can" I nod again. He leans forward and kisses my forehead. "You'll be okay" he says, standing back up. "Derek" Derek looks up at him. "Look after her"
"I will. Get your Dad to the hospital" Derek nods. Scott moves to help Mum. The twins help, leaving with him. Kira stays though. Kira's eyes are on me, her eyebrows burrowed in concern. "She's okay" Derek tells Kira. Kira nods but the worry line in her forehead stays there. I curl closer to Derek, searching for more warmth than he's providing. I'm so cold. Like worse than freezing. Is this how the others felt too?
"D-Derek..I-I..i'm so c-cold" I manage to say.
"Is it getting better or worse?" Derek asks me.
"W-worse" I say, teeth chattering.
"Why's it getting worse?" Kira asks. Derek doesn't answer her. "Derek, why's it getting worse?" she asks again. He finally looks up at her.
"I don't know" he says, looking confused himself.
"What do we do?"
"I..come here" Derek says to her. Kira comes over to us. Derek looks back down at me. "This might hurt, okay? But only for a few seconds" he tells me.
"What are y-you th-thinking?" I ask.
"Kira.." Derek trails off, looking from her hand to mine.
"No" Kira shakes her head. "I don't even know how to control it"
"Trust me, it'll work. Just take her hand, it'll work" Derek assures her.
"I don't know..it'll hurt her"
"I know you don't want to hurt her, I don't want you to either, but you need to jumpstart her heart. It's not warming her back up like it should be" Derek says. Kira looks to me. "Please Kira, she's freezing and I can't help. You can. Just for a couple seconds" Kira can see how worried Derek is.
"Ash?" she asks me.
"D-do it" I nod. Derek's right, I should be warming back up but i'm not, i'm getting colder. From the inside out. And that scares the crap out of me. Kira takes my hand.
"Ready?" she asks me. Derek takes my other hand, getting ready to leach my pain. I nod. I tense up when I feel the electricity corsing through me. I grit my teeth. Those 3 seconds feel like an eternity. When Kira lets go, I jolt up, gasping for air. I look at Kira, she backs away from me.
"What is it?" I ask her.
"Your..Ash, your eyes" she says, pointing at me. I turn and look at Derek. His eyes widen. Derek quickly helps me to my feet, pulling me into the bathroom. My heart skips a beat when I see it. My eyes are flickering yellow, faint, but still beta yellow. Then it dies out and all I see is violet.
"D-do you think..maybe..?" I ask, not wanting to ask the obvious question outloud.
"Maybe" Derek nods. I let out a shaky breath, leaning againist his shoulder. Maybe i'm not as human as I thought. Maybe i'm not as healed as I thought either.
