CHAPTER 8: TRAPPED?

I was awoken by the thunder roaring outside, the storm becoming more aggressive by the second. It was night already and the only sight I was able to catch outside was darkness, but I could vaguely see the outline of the tall trees when we first left the town only difference, this time instead of feeling relaxation, I felt fear. The hair on the back of my neck rose at the imagination at what laid in those deep, dark, hellish woods. The monsters in town were already enough, I can only imagine those in the wild.

"Storm is getting weird," A sudden voice spoke from beside me.

I turned to her direction and saw a woman, a middle-aged one, ginger hair tied up in a tight ponytail. She had broad features, no doubt she was muscular and bigger in mass than I was. What really caught my eyes were the tattoos basically like sleeves on her arms. Probably catching me staring she chuckled.

"What, neva' seen a tattoo before?" She asked, sporting a cocky grin on her face.

Blushing slightly from embarrassment I shook my head, "No, I was just interested in them I guess.."

She smiled, "This is was ma' last one before I was..."

I pursed my lips, understanding what her following words were to be. I wasn't much of a talker, but nowadays it's almost rare to actually talk to a real, sane person and I craved it sometimes. To hear my mom and dad's scolding voices, or my teacher's nagging directions, even that one girl who was always a bitch to me to call me a name of some sort. So when someone did speak to me, and didn't judge me as being a 'Young' I took the opportunity.

"H-how much longer is it from here to...?" I asked, genuinely curious why this trip was rather longer than I expected.

"I dunno to be honest, I heard somewhere 'round 4 more hours," She shrugged, my mind actually being surmised by her thick southern accent.

"Oh...thanks..." I muttered, pulling my legs up and staring at the leather fabric of the seat in front of me.

"The name's Hallie by the way, I'm guessin' you're Raphaella?"

My eyes immediately snapped to her with a certain coldness in them, "How do you know my name? Is it because I'm a 'Young'?"

"Whoa there nelly, calm down. I know your name because you knew one of my inmates Charlotte," She answered, much honesty in her voice yet such a struggle to accept and trust.

"Charlotte..." I whispered, the grave and upsetting flashback of the last time I saw her causing tears to well up my eyes, "Is she okay? What did they do to her?"

She just stared at me in the eye, pursing her lips and then glancing down. That. That expression. That same expression when I asked my mom why grandma didn't come home from the hospital, or when my mom gave me the news about Penelope in 10th grade when she...when she took that gun out of her dad's fucking cabinet. That same expression that just tore me piece by piece and the feeling... just drowned in me, dying within my very bones, just they like they had. Just like they had.

"I'm sorry, Raphaella..." She just spoke in an inaudible voice.

"What's to be sorry for," I replied blankly, tears rolling down my face, turning around completely to lean my side on the cushion of the seat. My reverting back to the raindrops that tapped the window a million times. It felt like a million years that I sat there. I barely knew Charlotte, but the fact that...that happened to her, merely because she was protecting her mother, just sickened me. This place, was the definition of Hell alright, a never ending life of eternal hell.

My eyes once again opened in utter panic at the ear-ringing screams of the women on the bus as well as the bus' queasy swerves all over the road. I held on for dear life onto the edge of the seat, as the world around me spun, and almost in and instant, the bus felt weightless as it reached the edge of the road, the wheels now on grass and bark instead of pavement. I turned to Hallie in panic, seeing her unconscious and laying on the seat face down, head bleeding, and the window cracked. The glass had a spider crack with crimson red filling in it, my heart sinking but remembering the situation I was in right now. Half a dozen women were being thrown around, as the bus had lost full control and before I knew it, my mouth had emitted a grunt before my entire body was forced to the window, my head also having the same fate as Hallie's as it slammed at the glass, my body suddenly falling to the roof of the bus as it flipped over, almost ninety percent of the windows breaking.

I saw blood, and glass, and fearful faces before my bruised and scratched up body hit a hard surface, the pain almost unable to bear. I winced, the ringing in my ears and the pounding in my head being too much, my eyes only being able to see faint images as I started coughing up an iron-tasting liquid.

Blood.

"Fuck.." I coughed, both of my arms having multiple bleeding slits on them from the glass I had fallen on. So much blood everywhere.

My eyes begged to stay open and find my way out of here but to no avail they had fallen and all I can do was listen.

"What the fuck just happened? Fucking Christ, there so much blood Taylor!" A woman had said, her voice afraid and shaky.

"Fucking damn bus lost control! Stupid ass driver must have skidded on the rain!" Her companion replied, angry and coughing.

"We need to go! This could be our chance!" Someone else with a higher toned voice spoke.

"She's fucking right! We need to move!" The first woman ordered, the bus creaking and moving beneath me, glass being heard as they stepped on it.

"Finally out of this God damn hell hole!"

Their voices became more distant, but I listened to them all the way until their presence had vanished. Then complete silence submerged me. Is this how it's going to end? Is this how my life was going to be taken away? No...no fucking hell no. NO!

Get up Raphaella. Get up! Please, fucking get up. You can do this...you can do this...

"C'mon..." I whispered, forcing my eyes to open and shaking as I brought my bleeding arm to grab one of the seats to pull me up. I groaned and screamed slightly at the ache and stings my body has I pulled myself up to my also injured knees. "Fuck...get...up.."

Sucking up the pain, I gulped and tasted the blood as it ran down my throat. A warm flow of liquid went down both sides of my head but I kept going. Keep going. Keep going. The throb in my head was almost like a hammer pounding at it from the inside, and it just slithered all through my wet, bloody scalp, my arms felt like they were being soaked in a bucket of alcohol with the cuts still fresh and my legs, just felt like jelly and every bone and muscle I had felt like they were in tiny pieces, cut up or ripped apart. I have never felt so much agony in my entire life, they say birth was the most painful but I beg to differ. This was. No, not the cuts or the broken bones I have but being alone. Being lost. Being gone.

I whimpered as I tried to pull myself up to my feet as well, but fell right down onto my knees. No, fucking get on your feet. Screaming out in pain I held onto the seat and brought feet up and wrangled my body up as much as I can, feeling like fainting as I reached the highest I could. Slowly, you got this.

"Oh my God..." I whispered, noticing all the bodies around me, lifeless and never having a second chance at the life they deserved. Some of them were even outside already, some just mangling around the bus, pieces of metal impaled into their bodies. The sight almost made me vomit, but I just tried my best to ignore it and remind myself they're in a better place now. I made sure not to limp my way into any of the bodies, my legs threatening to give up every step I took but I didn't let it.

Finally, I made my way out of the beaten bus from the front shattered windshield, noticing it had completed its crash landing on its side. I breathed in the fresh, damp air. It had stopped raining but it was still eaten up by darkness around me. I regained my normal balance, pulling myself together and searched around for any flashlight or supplies I could take. I felt oddly disrespectful for rummaging the dead bodies around but I needed to survive. Survival was key at this point to me and I needed to make sure it locked. I searched most of the bodies outside and was able to find a pocket knife, a couple dollar bills, some batteries, and a hankie.

"Dammit," I cursed, feeling disappointed at the only items I had found. Wait...the bus driver must have something. I checked the inside of the bus and saw on the side the emergency first-aid cabinet. Yes, yes, please. I opened it and I almost cried of joy when I saw the kit was still in it completely untouched. I grabbed it, smiling, but smiling even more when I saw at the gas pedal of the bus a backpack. I picked it up and read the tag:

Mary Sunderland, Bus Driver

I breathed out deeply, staring at the body of a woman in uniform laying outside on the ground. I'm sorry. I unzipped the bag and saw it had a flashlight, a couple crackers, a bottled water, her wallet, a revolver, some ammo and a couple of pills. Fucking fine for me. Better than what I had managed to find in my opinion. I stuffed all the items I had found into her backpack, took the flashlight and pulled the tag off before I slipped it over my shoulders, wincing at the slight sting it had on my back. Switching the flashlight on it flickered slight before maintaining steady. I made my way out of the bus and up the hill where the road was. Once making it up to it, I saw some glass on the ground, the pavement still wet.

"Oh no...which way, which way," I mumbled when I realized I had completely forgotten which way the bus had went from. I honestly wouldn't be fond of ending up where I had drove away from. No, no, no, where the fuck do I go? My heart beat began to speed up at the panic attack I was having. Shit, shit, shit! I don't know where to go! During through my terrified state I heard the sound of bushes moving behind me. I turned around, flashing the light around rapidly, my hand quivering. I spoke out in a horrified tone, "W-w-who's there?"

The sound of leaves breaking was heard to my left and I turned the light there, almost about to die in relief.

"Keep that there light out of ma' eye please?" Hallie spoke, all bruised, blood rolling down her head.

"H-H-Hallie?!"

"The one and only!" She chuckled, climbing up to me, clutching her side.

"I thought you were dead!" I cried out, tears starting to roll down my eyes. "Oh my god, you're alive!"

I wrapped my arms around her, so much weight being suddenly lifted off of my shoulders. She laughed, shaking her head, "Just got slightly knocked out from one of them turns when we gon' lost control!"

I pulled away and saw her look behind me as I heard a spine-rattling roar in the woods across the road. What the hell was that...?

"I say we find shelter, quick, I saw one of 'em caves just past where we crashed, checked it out and it was safe," She told me, pushing me in the direction the bus was at.

"Then let's go," I said shakily, not risking to come face to face with what I just heard.

We jogged through the thick trees, not turning back. Everytime I heard a roar or any unnatural noises around Hallie just urged me to continue moving forward. I gladly responded to it by obeying, just looking forward at her, never stopping. My legs were pleading to rest but I knew I had to tough it out until we get to the cave. She pointed across a small river, "Just past this and we're there!"

I nodded, following her, the cold water soothing the burning sting on my cut-up ankles. Though something in the corner of my eye caught my attention. I turned to my right and looked up at the night sky. Smoke. I saw smoke just a couple miles up ahead the river, no doubt it was a home but who would live in such a terror of a place like this?

"Raphaella!"

Hallie's voice snapped me out of my trance and I continued past the river, climbing up a small hill and pushing away multiple branches before being greeted with a stone camouflaged cave. I walked in, breathless and tired and I collapsed onto my hands and knees onto the ground. "Damn, I'm tired."

"Same here, but I suggest we scour up some branches to build a fire and warm up," She suggested, my cold body agreeing.

From all the adrenaline, I hadn't even noticed how low the temperature was outside and the fact each time I drew out a breath I saw a little fog fly in between my lips. I got up and went out once more, picking up some wood and sticks before heading back to the cave. I plopped them down onto the ground, Hallie coming in with some wood as well before kneeling down and using some fire technique I (as a city girl) have never really seen. A small spark ignited as she spun the end of the stick back and forth the she blew at it, flames erupting in the woods. My eyes had yet seen light for a while and it hurt when it lit up but I embraced the heat it surrounded us with. I sat on my butt, pulling my legs up and staring at Hallie who was leaning back at the wall, also looking exhausted.

"I-I saw smoke just up the river," I informed her in a quiet voice.

"I wouldn't trust it," She replied blandly, raising her eyebrows at me.

"You think they'll hurt us?" I asked curiously.

"Oh, darlin' I know they'll hurt us. 'Round here we're like them blacks back in the days when segregation was up, treated like animals because we're nothin' more than slaves," She spat at the ground beside her, quite angry at the officers of Silent Hill.

"Oh..." Was all I had to say to that, my mind drifting off slightly at what she said:

Nothing more than slaves. Nothing more than property. Nothing more than animals.

"You wouldn't need to worry 'bout that though," She sighed.

I gave her a puzzled look, "Why not?"

"Have you forgotten what you are?"

My blood went cold as the word echoed through my head, I spat through my teeth, "Doesn't matter what I am."

"You think we think that? No, honey. Them government people think that. They think you're down right special," She smiled wickedly and I scoffed, shaking my head.

"There's nothing special about me. I'm younger, big whoop, doesn't change anything."

"That's not just it, Raphaella."

"Then what is?" I asked, starting to get frustrated.

"Nurse Lisa and Dr. Kauffman. They've never treated anyone like they did to you," She whispered, her big green eyes looking directly at me.

"What?"

"You really think the monsters here, want to be here?"

I thought about it real well and in conclusion my answer seemed right to me, "No, but they're monsters. They're here for a reason."

"Have you ever thought that maybe they were trapped?"

That sent me into a loop, "Trapped?"

"Yes..."

"Wait what do you-"

"We should get some rest, we got a long day tomorrow, we start heading towards the border of the human world and Silent Hill," She just answered, laying on her side and turning her back to me.

"What do you mean trapped though?" I asked, still wondering what she meant by that but I didn't get a response. I sighed, pulling my backpack to where I was going to lay and laid down on my side, Hallie's words repeating itself into my head.

"Trapped...trapped...trapped.."

What did she mean?
