Previously: CHRISTMAS! So out of season it's weird but, Juvia was embarrassed by her bad grade on the exam so she avoided Gray. When they met up, Gray being an hour late, they traded presents. His was a reference book, then the two go off and have their light hearted date.
The teacher wrote away on the chalkboard as Juvia spaced out on her supplementary classes, only thinking about her date with Gray last night. The school hallways were quiet, so we're all the students except the small sound of pencils on the hard desks.
"The two of us... On Christmas..." She closed her eyes, "we traded gifts, saw the big Christmas tree together... Then went home. Only an hour and a half... It still echoes in my head."
Levy noticed her friend staring at her reference book lovingly, eyes shining like she was in love. "Why are you staring at a reference book like that?"
"This!..." Juvia held it up, unable to hide her small smile. "Is what I got from Gray... For Christmas!"
"A book to help you study for school?" Levy sighed pathetically, then said,"that's great..."
It was Juvia's turn to sigh, remembering her running out of the house, slipping on snow, all were memories- "But I feel like... He sees my weaknesses a lot..."
"Today's the last day of extra classes," the book worm stretched, side glancing at her friend. "Which means, you need to ask Gray out on a date! You won't see him for three days, so you might want to ask him to go visit a shrine with him on New Years Day."
"Oh... Yeah," Juvia muttered.
After their study period ended with the teacher, the two headed to the dojo. Juvia peeked from behind the corner of the school building. She could just sneak a peek at Natsu, Gray, and a couple of other boys rough housing on their break. Then one boy meet her gaze, and smiled. This caught the attention of three others, until the fuss drew in the dark haired boy. He looked over at Juvia an smiled lightly, she fully stepped out of her hiding and gestured to come over.
Gray jogged over, ignoring the groans of the guys. He couldn't hide his flushed face, nor did he care at that moment. A small towel was on his neck, and when he reached the young lady, he wiped the sweat off his face.
"S-sorry..." She started, knowing how important Karate is to her boyfriend. "You're in the middle of training..."
"No, it's fine," Gray reassured, and watched as his girlfriend started to shake in embarrassment.
"Club activities on New Years Eve?" She said, not looking away from the ground.
"No..." He answered, and Juvia looked up hopefully.
"Want to visit the shrine together?" Her hopes rising to new levels, and he couldn't help but blush at the excitement on her face.
"But..." Gray suddenly changed the mood as he shifted uncomfortably. "I have Winter training New Years Day, not with this Dojo but my previous one... Sorry."
"Oh," she couldn't be angry. After all he looked upset about it, so Juvia smiled. Concealing her disappointment and heavy heart. "It's okay, good luck."
"Yes!" Gray said, returning a toothy grin. With that, the blue haired girl knew she was okay with it.
Juvia bowed and without waiting for him to return it, she began to walk away. "Wait!" His voice panicked, stopping her in her tracks. Juvia turned back to Gray and watched him walk back to his previous distance from her.
"Yes." She couldn't hide her anxiety.
"... Phone number? Can you give it to me?" Gray felt his ears go red, feeling strangely awkward asking this question. "I want to keep in contact with you, of course we'd need to talk.
Juvia smiled sweetly at him, feeling all her insides tie up in knots as she stared at Gray. It was always the same, one thing tipped her into euphoria.
"Yeah, let me get something to write-" she started to reach for her bag.
"No, it's fine." He stopped her with his words, "I'll remember it."
Juvia stared a couple seconds before shifting her weight to the other foot. Then, she began to recite her phone number, him repeating after each set.
"Alright," he smiled at her after saying her full number, and with that.
They left with big smiles.
On New Years Eve, Levy and Lucy came over to Juvia's house to celebrate. They ate a big meal and all girls were zoning out at 11. Juvia couldn't help but constantly look at her phone, hoping for it to ring. Once it hit 12, they all yelled the usual. Smiling and laughing, then barely thirty minutes later, each girl began to crash.
"Juvia..." Levy muttered as she cuddled a pillow. "This year, was my favorite year ever."
"Me too." Juvia smiled at her best friend, "I'm glad I met you, and we became... So close."
With that, Levy blushed and fell asleep. Lucy smiled at Juvia, they've spent every New Years together and this was just another one to remember forever. Soon after that, the blonde went to bed room.
Juvia leaned up against her bad staring at her phone. It was late, she didn't have her hopes up, but she worried about him forgetting her digits. Suddenly, a phone buzzed and Juvia spun so quickly it hurt her neck. But it was Levy's, getting text messages right night to hers. Letting out a sigh, Juvia took her phone and sat on her bed. For a couple minutes she went in a daze and thought about giving Gray her number on a piece of paper.
Then it buzzed. Juvia looked at the caller ID only to see its unknown, with a silent prayer, she hit accept. She put it on her ear with a shaky hand.
"Hello?" It wasn't only her hand that shook.
"It's Gray." His voice tired and husky, it caused the girl to shiver. "Happy New Year."
"... Happy... New Year, Gray." She smiled, overjoyed he finally called. The girl in love hugged the nearby pillow and fell back into her bed.
"You sound different on the phone." He said, his embarrassment audible.
"You do too,"
Then a pause, only their hushed breathing could be heard on the lines. Juvia stumbled through her mind looking for a topic, suddenly a thought came. She inhaled a sharp breath.
"This year too... I'll be in your care..." Juvia blushed and self consciously buried her face into the pillow.
"Yeah..." Gray whispered, as if this conversation was private and special.
But they both knew this small things, were very special.
Juvia stared up at the ceiling and without thinking it through, she muttered-
"I really want to see you." She was about to close her eyes and give into to the fact he couldn't see her.
"I'll go see you now." Gray hung up with that.
Without a second thought, Juvia rushed to get ready. Keeping quiet so her sleeping friends couldn't hear her stumble around the room. Juvia was aware she was sneaking out at 12:30. Yet, she didn't care. When she was finally dressed in cuter and warmer clothes, the blue haired girl peeked out her window.
It didn't take long for her eyes to widen and the heat rise to her cheeks. Juvia went down to the entryway quickly, but silent. She slipped on comfortable boots before opening and closing the front door, taking a couple steps to her boyfriend.
His coat was thick and black, the fur lining was tickling his red face. Gray's breath was hitched, making it obvious he ran to her house. Every single breath was accompanied with a puff of white air, the snow floating down, and it collecting in his ivory black hair.
"I didn't say it properly. I'll be in your care too." He smiled, his face not only red from the cold. "You know, you're kind of amazing..."
Juvia blushed, not knowing where it came from. She wants to tell him he was ten times more amazing than her, but she could only look down and remain embarrassed. He stared at the young woman, her eyes, her nose, her lips. But then he turned away.
"I have to go..." He muttered, and began to walk back home.
Juvia took a couple steps to catch up to him. Then she stopped, remembering he had appointments that day. She remembered how selfish of an act it was to say she wanted to see him. Juvia grabbed his hand, noting how strangely cold it was.
"Thank you." She stared at his surprised face, and how it slowly went back to the slightly flushed guy she liked.
"In the morning... I have commitments for Karate, so I can't go to the shrine then. But," Gray wrapped his fingers around her's and pulled her in closer. "We can go now though... If you want to."
Levy woke up to an eating Lucy and Juvia still curled up in her bed. She stole some of the snack food and glanced over her phones messages. They small chatted until Levy turned to Juvia's bed and hummed.
"She's out..." The bookworm muttered, eliciting a chuckle from Lucy.
"Actually," the blonde pulled back the blankets to show it was only two pillows and a volleyball. "She snuck out, I did this, reluctantly, so her mom wouldn't find out."
"So our shy and reserved Juvia snuck out." Levy muttered quietly. "She's probably with Gray, so I'm sure she's safe. I'll text her to make sure."
"It's fine, we trust in her. She's smart enough to not do anything stupid."
They traded a knowing smile.
