Ha, we made it. Here we go.
Colin sat, with a beer in his hand, on the swing next to the fire pit outside of the converted airplane hangar that was his home, when he heard the rumble of V-twin motors in the distance. He grinned widely as he recognized that his friends had made it. He loved May, because that's when the Law Enforcement Tactical Operations expo brought his closest friends to his humble home. For two weeks a year they drank, hung out and played cop games.
It was without a doubt his favorite time of the year.
The bikes roared up the driveway and he tilted his head slightly at the sight. He recognized Kate's bike and he knew that the woman riding next to her would be Jane on her new ride. He also figured that the odd man out was Frankie, riding that Café Racer he was so proud of, but the blue trike threw him off.
At least until he recognized the rider. He broke out in a full-fledged belly laugh at the sight of Olivia Benson riding a hog of her own with a massive grin plastered on her face.
He stood up as they slowed down and Kate led the pack into the hangar.
He followed the last bike in, still laughing as Kate looped around the bay and parked next to his Street Stalker. Jane promptly lined up next to her, as did Liv although she had to turn just a bit wider. Frankie rolled past them and stopped on the far side of Colin's ride. Kate and Jane leaned onto the kickstands and shut down, as did Liv.
Frankie smiled as he set his bike down too.
"Hey," Colin said with a smile, "You get that ugly European junk out of here."
Frankie pause a second to look at him but the grin never left Colin's face. "Hey, I felt out of place for the last thousand miles. I've earned indoor parking, thank you very much." He took off his helmet and set it on the handlebars.
Colin waited for him to get off the bike before snatching Frankie into a headlock for a good old fashioned noogie. He let go and Frankie grinned while rubbing his head, "Nice to see you too."
Colin laughed and slapped him hard on the back. "Welcome to my little dive."
Jane laughed as she set her helmet on the floor and climbed off. Kate stood too and they walked to Colin together. He held his arms out and they each took a side and hugged him tightly before kissing him on the cheeks, simultaneously.
He laughed harder, "This must be what it's like to date the double mint twins."
Jane smacked him in on the top of the head as Kate elbowed him in the stomach.
He groaned with a grin, "Except you could kick both of their asses."
"Better," Jane said with a tight lipped smile.
Colin yanked Jane into a bear hug and picked her up off the ground. Her feet dangling three inches off the ground and her arms wrapped around him.
He set her down and she grinned, "Do I have to pick you up now?"
"Might make your brother a bit twitchy like at Thanksgiving."
She laughed and stepped back as Kate launched herself at him, He caught her and like Jane, hugged her tightly, "Twice a year is too long between visits."
Kate stepped away, "Well you're the one who didn't want to reenlist."
"They were going to send me to Benning to train soldiers and then out to Bagdad." He rubbed his side where both knew he hid his scars, "I've seen enough of the Middle East, thank you very much."
Liv walked slowly up to him and he noticed a change in her immediately; they had always been close. He pulled her into his arms and held her tight. She gripped him hard and smiled, "It's good to be home."
"Welcome home, lass."
He smiled as he felt how light hearted she was. She had lost that weight that was pressing down on her and it warmed him to know that she'd be alright.
She looked up at him and smiled. He nodded. They would talk later, in private.
"Hey, Colin?" He looked up to see Jane dragging her kit off the back of her bike. "Is it here?"
"Yeah," He said referring to the rifle Jane had asked him to get for her, "It's in the cage next to the tool locker along with a case of ammo."
Colin saw Kate stiffen for half a second and Jane put a hand on her shoulder as she nodded to him.
He wanted to ask but a look at Kate's eyes as she took Jane's bag to the bar stopped him. He watched as Jane unhooked Kate's kit and instead of taking it to Kate's room she carried it to the bar and set it on the floor. Kate stared at the bag as if her worst nightmares were inside.
Liv took Colin and Frankie by the arms, "Let's give them a few minutes." She said as she led them outside.
Jane looked at Kate, "We don't have to do this right now. I can take care of it for you."
Kate looked up at her, her fear plainly visible, "I don't want to do this, Jane. That's the very reason why I have to do it now."
Jane nodded and hefted the bag up onto the bar. Kate stood next to it and forced herself to open it. She stared at camouflage painted metal.
Jane put a hand on her shoulder and Kate jumped slightly, "You want me to do it?"
She took a shaky breath, "Just help me. Please?"
"I'm here." She said, her voice was low and supportive. "I'm not going anywhere."
Another breath to steady herself and Kate reached a hand in and pulled out the disassembled weapon. She laid each piece out on the table and then zipped the bag up and lugged it to the floor.
"This is ridiculous!" She yelled, "I've held this thing in my hands more than once, why is this so different now?"
Her partner gripped her hand, "Because now you're not holding it in Evidence. It's in your hands now and you can use it. You have control of it with no nice safety procedures, rules and regulations to govern you. You can use this tool as you see fit."
Kate rested her hands on the pieces of metal that had ruled her dreams for the last year. They were cold, innocent, hunks of metal until they were assembled. Then they became a killing machine with devastating range and deadly accuracy.
She looked to her partner, "What do I do first?"
Jane tipped her mouth into a small grin, "You're amazing, Kate. You always have been. It assembles almost exactly like your M-4. In fact, 68% of the parts are interchangeable."
Although this particular weapon wasn't one that Jane was as familiar with, she and Esposito had drilled on it a few times so that she could do this very thing. As she detailed the assembly procedure, Kate performed the tasks until the rifle sat on the bar, ready for use.
Kate stared at it and after being silent for a few minutes, she tore it back down to pieces. Jane watched and was concerned until Kate started to reassemble it. She tore it down twice more and then finally stopped. The rifle stood on its bipod legs and on the stock.
Jane watched as the fear faded slightly from Kate's eyes. It wasn't a lot, but it was progress.
Kate never took her eyes off it. "Could you show me yours?"
Jane walked towards the work out area and came back a few seconds later. Kate barely noticed until Jane had set a large heavy rifle that had almost twice the length down on the bar next to it. Her vision expanded to both rifles and her partner.
"This is a Grizzly Big Bore." Jane explained, "Unlike your rifle, it doesn't have a magazine. It's a breach loading single shot. It's a fifty caliber so it has a much greater range and a helluva lot more kick."
She lifted the rear of the gun and turned the stock. Kate heard a sharp click and Jane pulled the stock out, "The firing pin and bolt is here." She held up the large 'T' shaped object she'd just removed, "The shell goes on the end of this and you slide and lock it back in place before you rack it."
She did exactly that, minus the bullet. "It's ready to fire."
Kate looked at it, "It seems complicated for a sniper rifle."
"It is when used in combat." Jane admitted, "But it's lighter and more balanced than say the BAR 50 Cal. It' a great hunting rifle and awesome for competitions, but believe me when I tell you that it is lethal and it has a very long reach."
Kate looked at her own rifle, "This is more built for combat."
"Yep," Jane agreed, "Lighter, durable, high capacity magazine… it's built for war."
Jane sat down and looked up at Kate, "The sniper rifle does more than simply kill at a distance. It's a tactical weapon that performs two tasks with a single bullet. The first is to kill the intended target from a distance, but in such an abrupt and unexpected manner that it instills fear and demoralizes the enemy. That's the second."
"It can certainly do that." Kate said knowingly.
"Kate, you have one of the most effective devices for killing in your possession. State of the art design and especially being a semi-automatic, it's capable of taking out a target per second in the right hands." Jane placed a hand on her shoulder. "But it is a tool. You are the one in control of it. You can use it for what it was meant for, or you can throw it on the ground and destroy it. It's yours to do with whatever you want, not the other way around."
Kate stared at the rifle and nodded in silence. Jane watched her carefully until the silence was broken up by the rumble of V-twin motorcycles. Jane looked out the door and saw a dresser and a sport bike coming up the drive, but the sound wasn't Harley made.
"He's here." She said to Kate who nodded.
They watched as the two men rode into the hangar on a pair of Victory motorcycles. Like everyone else they turned around inside and lined up with the others. They shut down and leaned the bikes on their kickstands before climbing off.
"Nice ride, pal." Jane said with a cocky grin, "I know that ain't yours."
The tallest one took his helmet of and set it on the seat revealing his thick straight black hair. Next he pulled off his sunglasses to reveal brown eyes so dark, most thought they were black. His muscular build wasn't hidden very well beneath the black T shirt that sported the letters FBI on the back and although he wore dark blue jeans, it was the belt buckle that was the most telling.
It was a rectangle with the image of a rooster on it with the word Cocky underneath. She knew that the belt and the buckle were worn even underneath the black FBI suit this man normally wore.
Special Agent Seeley Booth of the D.C. FBI office glanced over at the Harleys and smiled slightly, "Sometimes I dare to be different."
Jane looked back at Kate who was watching the other man, "Didn't know you'd be bringing a guest." Kate said and folded her arms.
Booth glanced over his shoulder, "This is my friend, Agent Lance Sweets."
The newly introduced Agent smiled brightly as he took off his helmet, "Nice to meet you." He said as he placed his helmet on the seat a little too gently, checking to make sure it wouldn't slide off.
Sweets looked back to see the black haired woman eyeing him from head to toe. He had the distinct impression that he was being sized up as a threat. Her eyes seemed to borough into him and he almost shivered.
Jane watched him carefully, noting that the harder she looked at him the more nervous he got. She kept her grin in check, Oh he's going to make a nice target this week.
Sweets stood at six foot even and had a trim build that came off as skinny. Dark curly hair with dark eyes and dimples that put Jane's to shame, he could almost pass as Italian but not with a name like Sweets. His build indicated that he wasn't a field agent. It was something she had to call Booth on.
"And his specialty is…" She drew her hands out wide.
"I…" He started to say before Booth cut him off.
"Sweets is a profiler and a damn good one at that." He sent a glare to Jane, "He also happens to be a good friend of mine so I expect you to be nice, Jane."
Kate growled low in her throat, "He's a shrink." She picked up her rifle and carried it over to the large cage.
Jane nodded and followed suit.
"Hey," Seeley said, "That's a hell of a piece of hardware there." He pointed at Kate. "Looks like a KAL shooter."
"Mark Twelve." She said as she set it gently into the rack, "And before your friend gets in my head, this is the one that gave me this."
She jerked her baby doll down to show the puckered scar between her breasts.
Booth silently eyed the scar and immediately understood.
Sweets on the other hand stared drop-jawed. "Why would…"
Booth cut him off with a shake of the head.
Jane placed her rifle next to Kate's and closed and locked the cage. She set the electronic lock and watched as Kate snatched up her bag and stalked to her room to put away her gear.
"Bad timing?" Booth asked.
"You could say that but I'm sure it has more to do with Profiler Sweets." She stalked up to Booth, "Does he know?" She leveled a finger at the younger man.
"Yes." He said, "He knows because he can read the file and profile Mr. Mystery."
Jane growled low but he continued, "He also helped me get a lot of information off the record that can help us."
She looked at Sweets, "Did Booth tell you that everyone who has touched this case has either died or came damn near, including me, my partner, my fiancé, my niece, our former captain, and a hand full of other good cops?"
"He did say that it was a bad case." Sweets said coolly and professionally. "I know the dangers but Booth won't let me have any names. Ergo, Mr. Mystery."
Jane grumbled as she snatched up her bag and followed Kate.
"Are they always this happy?" Sweets said to Booth.
"Like the lady said, bad timing." He patted the younger man on the back and walked out to talk to Colin.
Kate lay in the tall grass overlooking the wide field. Her heart was pounding and her hands were clammy as she gripped the rifle that had almost ended her life. She stared down the scope and across a field of empty space, the red crosshairs settled on a spoiled watermelon that was leaning against a post. Her breath was ragged and she felt ready to pass out when a gentle hand pressed down on her shoulder.
"Breathe easy, girl." She listened to Jane's raspy voice as the latter gently rubbed her partner's back, "It's just a rifle and you have complete control over it."
The words were reassuring as Kate closed her eyes and took in a deep breath.
"Better," the husky voice whispered, "Are you ready?"
Kate opened one eye and steadied her hand, "I'm nervous."
"The first shot is always nerve racking," Jane replied, "You never know what to expect out of a new weapon the first time you use it."
Kate nodded and took another deep breath, "I'm ready."
"Okay," Jane's voice said reassuringly. The hand slipped away and she felt her partner move next to her.
"Range is six hundred and forty one feet."
That's twice the distance I was shot at. Kate thought.
"Wind from the north east at 2.3 MPH. Adjust right one and one half tick marks."
Kate moved the reticle from center mass until the mark replaced it.
"Elevation is down seven degrees and drop will be about three inches per hundred feet after four hundred so raise up to the top of the melon."
Kate did as told. The shot looked strange to her.
Jane set down the devices Colin had lent her and placed earmuffs over her partner's ears before she laid down next to her and looked through the spotter's scope.
She gently rested a hand on Kate's shoulder, the signal that she was clear to fire.
Kate took a deep breath and squeezed the trigger. The rifle bucked and through the scope, Jane watched the bullet tear a chunk off of the post.
She tapped Kate again.
Bang! Another miss. Jane locked the scope and watched Kate as she tapped her again.
Another shot and Jane saw what Kate was doing. She eased one muff off her partner.
"Hey, relax." She soothed. "Don't hold your breath in. Let it go out and hold it when your lungs are empty."
Kate glanced at her and nodded.
"Everything comes into play at these distances, even a twitch of your finger. Just let it go and gently squeeze."
She put the muff back on and re-sighted the melon. A tap later, Kate blew it apart.
Jane looked at her partner and found her breathing heavy but steady. Her hands were clenching but she stayed with it.
Jane pulled the muff off, "You okay?"
Kate turned her head, "Give me another one." Jane could see the fear there but there was something else too. Hope. Kate had hope in her eyes and Jane was happy to see it.
The Italian smiled, "Okay."
Jane sighted a melon not far away from the first one and called it out to Kate. She adjusted and nodded.
Jane called out the corrections and it took Kate two shots, but she got it.
Half an hour later, Jane was calling them out and Kate was nailing them. Not as cleanly as a pro but she was definitely hitting them.
They heard a banshee roaring in the distance and Jane called safety. Kate immediately set the rifle on safe and set the butt on the ground. Jane snatched up the spotter's scope and scanned the two tracks. The dust from the one that lead to the hangar got her attention. Clearly not as familiar with the terrain as they were, the rider followed the trail that would lead them right to their position.
Jane held a hand up and Kate unsnapped the optics from her rifle and handed it over. The dark hair and sunglasses of the rider made Jane groan.
"It's Booth." She groaned. "He's alone."
Kate blew out a huff, "Starting to wonder how I'd do on a moving target."
Jane smiled as she closed the lens cap and handed the scope back. "Let's see if he can even find us." They laid down in the tall grass and waited.
Ten minutes later the Banshee pulled up smoothly and Booth shut it down next to the Security BRP Commander they came out in. He climbed off the bike and took his helmet off before replacing his sunglasses. A fast 360 degree turn and he made a bee line right for them.
Jane groaned as she realized Booth knew exactly where they were at.
"Nice day for some shooting." He said smoothly.
Jane sat up and looked at him. "What are you doing out here?"
"Needed a quiet setting to tell you what I uncovered about Bracken." He said as he came into their camp. "If this is a bad time then I can come back."
Jane snorted, "We are a little busy."
He looked out at the empty area. "How many targets you got out there?"
Kate groaned, "About fifty."
He looked down at her; the sniper rifle lay right next to her.
"I figured Rizzoli for the sharp shooter." He said with a soft smile. "How long have you been shooting?"
Kate groaned at him "Today." She said and instinctively reached for her chest. He caught the movement and knelt on one knee. "You've got good position and an excellent view." He lifted his head into the wind. "Three miles from the west, north west. Your cover is good too. These are optimal condition to train with."
Jane stared at him as if his head had fallen off, "You know something about it?"
"Yeah," he said with confidence, "and it still haunts me some days."
Jane glanced at her partner. Kate shook her head and closed her eyes.
"He'd be able to tell you more then I can." Jane said.
Kate sighed and looked up at Booth, "I have PTSD."
He stopped smiling and got serious, "And this is the last step in your recovery."
She picked up the rifle and held it in her lap. "I've been afraid of this thing for over a year and I'm trying to learn it so I won't be afraid of it anymore."
A moment of shock crossed him as he realized that Kate Beckett was a lot tougher than he had realized. There weren't many who would embrace their fears like this and it spoke volumes about her character. Having gone through some PTSD of his own, he understood what she was going through, "The difference between control and understanding will be your biggest challenge. You can shoot that weapon all day, every day, but if you don't understand it, it will still be a mystery and you won't get past it."
"I can show her how to shoot it," Jane said dryly, "but I don't understand it because I have a knack for it. It's all instinct for me."
Booth moved to kneel next to Kate, "I can teach you, if you'll let me."
Kate looked back at her partner, the only one she really trusted. She didn't want anyone else in this but over a hundred rounds later, despite a relative comfort with the weapon; she was no closer to her goal.
Kate looked up, "Could you teach me?"
A couple hours later Liv watched them roaring back towards the hangar and within a few minutes she saw that Kate was holding the rifle in her hands and to Liv's surprise, she was smiling. Colin had been right to send Booth out to teach Kate. Although the Army Sergeant had a solid working knowledge of sharpshooting, he wasn't a sniper. Booth was and he was also an instructor at Quantico from time to time.
Jane parked the Commander outside the door and Booth rode up next to them. Kate slid out of the seat and carried the rifle inside as Jane followed with the bag of equipment. Liv looked up at Booth who was business as usual as he climbed off the Banshee.
"Well?" She asked, "How's she doing?"
He looked over at her and raised an eyebrow, "She's going to be okay."
Liv nodded as she sipped at the bottle of beer in her hand.
Kate's fears were waning as she began to understand what the rifle was and for the first time, she felt as though she was getting better. Still nervous about it, she carefully locked the rifle away in the cage and nodded to her partner.
Booth came up behind them and took off his sunglasses. "I've got some news." He said simply.
Kate looked over at her partner and nodded. Now is good.
Jane agreed and led him to the bar where she promptly sat down. "Okay, tell us."
He sighed as he shoved his hands into his pockets. "Your Mr. Mystery has a very in-depth résumé both on top of and under the table."
Kate snorted as she sat down, "We know that already."
He sighed heavily, "I don't think you do. Mr. Mystery has been acting oddly lately. He pushed for an increase in Border Patrols near the Mexican border and a stronger Coast Guard presence in the gulf. He's even gone as far as try to push for a few naval vessels to survey the gulf. With the new drugs that are rolling in he's getting a lot of support, might even be enough to overshadow his divorce."
Jane's eyes widened, "Could he still run for president?"
Booth nodded, "If he can make a big enough dent in the cartels, yeah, he could."
"Last we heard from a CI," Kate added, "He was running scared of a cartel boss."
He opened the refrigerator and snatched out a beer, "That was a few weeks ago. Based on his recent activity I'd say that he made up with them."
"How does making the playing field harder to cross help him win favor with the cartel?" Jane asked.
"It doesn't." he said as he sat down and popped the top, "Unless that's what your kingpin wants him to do. Otherwise this would just piss off those cartels."
Kate got a distant look on her face and Jane caught it, "What are you thinking?"
"The Raven," She replied coldly, "This bitch has been three moves ahead of us every step of the way. There is no reason for her to push Bracken into increasing patrols unless she's trying to cut off her competition's supplies."
Catching on immediately, her partner looked at Booth, "She's not using the usual methods to get her product into the country."
"Wait, Hold on," Booth cut in. "Who's the Raven?"
"Our Kingpin." Kate said. "All of the bodies from the Triple Threat have been tied to this new Cartel. We recently flipped a guy and got a name, the Raven. According to a CI, rumors have been flying around that she's methodically taking over the Columbian Cartels. We've also turned our key distributor in New York who linked her to other homicides but our flip got shanked at Major Case before we got any more out of him."
Booth stared at them, "You had a suspect and you turned him over to Major Case?"
Jane's look was of abject frustration, "He'd killed a cop and Major Case took over. We got stuck sharing."
He could see it was a sore spot for them so he let it go and moved on, "Well, in any case, my best info says that he's made nice with his handler and is back on track for a run at the White House. But something that you may not know is that Bracken has two handlers. The cartel and someone very powerful in Washington who's pulling strings for him. Sweets can tell you more about this than I can because he understands this kind of thing but just from what I've told him, he believes the threat is genuine to you and your family."
Kate looked to her partner and Booth leaned back as there was more information passed between them. After seeing it a handful of times the only way he could describe it was the same way he synched his phone to his car. He didn't know how it worked or understood how they knew, but it worked.
Jane closed her eyes, "Okay. Let's do it." She said as she rested her elbows down on the bar.
"Go get Sweets." Kate said. "But bring Liv and Colin too."
A confused look passed over him but he got up and headed outside.
A few minutes later, they were all piled up at the bar, sans Frankie who was getting squared away in the barracks.
"Okay," Kate started, "Booth, these are the two people that we trust above all others. They know how to keep a secret and most importantly, they're not directly involved. They both know the risks on this case and they know what's happened to us and our loved ones. Feel free to speak freely in front of them."
He looked at the Army Sergeant who sat drinking a beer and the muscular woman with reddish brown hair next to him. If they trusted them, he'd have to too.
Booth nodded as he set a file down on the counter, "This is my friend, Sweets. He's a psychologist and a profiler, one of the best and he doesn't want to know about our guy so call him Mr. Mystery." He clapped a hand on the back of the tall skinny agent next to him, "Go ahead, Lance."
"Long story short, Mr. Mystery is becoming a threat and it's not going to be easy to take him down. He's got high end political connections and his popularity is on the rise because he's secretly working with a cartel to shut down the drug lines between Columbia and the US. Increase in Coast Guard patrols and DEA units on the Mexican border have been effective mainly because they're being fed information from one cartel bent on shutting down the competition."
"Now as far as bringing charges against Mr. Mystery, there are two major issues there. One is that without more evidence there's nothing substantial enough for a congressional or Supreme Court indictment which is what you need to shut down him down to say nothing about a trial. The closer you get to Washington, the more blurry things get. Justice starts taking a back seat to politics and favors from powerful people get you out of everything short of espionage."
Kate groaned, "And the other?"
His look got serious, "Finding someone to prosecute this case."
"Even with the evidence that we've gathered," Booth added, "It's going to be career suicide for whoever takes this on. So we'd need someone who's willing to go out with a bang."
"I thought Washington would hate corrupt politicians more than we do." Jane said.
"Everyone is corrupt to some level or another." Sweets said simply, "Exchanging a vote or a favor to get your kid out of active duty in the war, using your political position to get out of a traffic ticket, exchanging support on special interest groups to get a bill through. It's politics, plain and simple."
Booth nodded, "Bottom line is that Washington as a whole doesn't like a prosecutor who digs up dirt on one of their own, not because they're okay with what the bad guy did but because they don't want their own secrets to get brought out. Win, lose, or draw, that prosecutor retires or is run out."
Jane sighed and her head fell into her hands as Kate sat back and crossed her arms over her chest.
"Then we're screwed." Kate groaned, "How are we going to find someone to take this on if it's the end of their career."
"There's more than one option, ladies." Colin put a hand on each of the partner's shoulders. "How about an old guy who's running out of career anyway?"
Shaking his head Lance leaned on the table with his elbows. "Anyone who's been in there that long will have political issues. There's no way to find out if you can trust them. Say you find one who does take on Mr. Mystery. A few words from the right people, an old debt or two dropped and he tanks your case."
"They need a prosecutor who hasn't been bought." Olivia said. "How about one who believes like we do? One who believes in what we are doing and, one who fights for Truth and Justice."
"Liv, don't say it." Kate warned.
Ignoring her, Liv looked directly at Booth and at Sweets, "I know a prosecutor in Washington whom I trust implicitly, and she does this because she believes in it."
Now it was Jane who tried, "Liv, you can't ask Alex to take this on!"
Colin frowned as Liv put her hands on the table across from Jane and leaned in, "I'd never ask Alex to do this. She's not committed enough to go the distance."
Jane looked to Kate, Who is she talking about?
I don't know. She replied before looking around the table. No one gave any indication of what Liv was up to. The brunette grinned wide and it almost scared Jane, almost.
"Abbie Griffin." She said in a smooth melodic tone. "She's the only one I'd ask and I have no right to do so."
"Great," Booth said, "I can look her up in the directory at the Attorney General's office but how will I know who she is when I see her?"
"Give me your phone." She said.
Booth looked at the rest of them in confusion before he took it out and handed it to her. He thought she was going to put in a phone number but it stunned the hell out of everyone when she held it up and snapped a picture of Jane. She handed the phone back and grinned. "Abbie Griffin looks just like Jane."
Jane lurched to her feet, "Carmichael!?"
"You know her?" Kate stood up next to her partner, "We just met her last month and how do you know you can trust her?"
Liv stood up straight and Colin put a hand on her back, "Abbie used to be one of my ADA's when I started at SVU. She knows the system better than anyone I know and she's dedicated to Justice. She can't be bought, she doesn't play nice when you try to intimidate her and in court, she's like a pit bull with a bone. Once she latches on, she won't let go. The only problem might be that I heard she got married a few years back and has kids now but the last time Alex came back from D.C., she said that Abbie is still the same old Abbie."
Booth looked at the partners, "Okay, if you give me the go ahead, I'll look into Mrs. Griffin."
More nonverbal communication and Jane flopped back onto the stool as Kate groaned. "What is she going to need?"
"Since she doesn't know Booth he's going to need a way in and I have that. After that it's up to him to convince her." She looked at Kate and Jane again, "You met her before?"
"Last month when we were in court," Kate said, "Her co-council and I got our partners mixed up and it was actually kind of funny later."
"Then when you feel comfortable letting her in," Liv looked back at Booth, "Tell her that her double is one of the cops."
"I got one better," Jane said as Booth met her eyes, "Tell her this…"
And the plot thickens...
